Taylor desperate for title

Best ever setting sights on 14th world title at Alexandra Palace

Phil Taylor is desperate for another World Championship crown to cap off a remarkable year - saying he would trade-in every other title he owns to succeed at Alexandra Palace.

Since losing out to Wayne Mardle at the last World Championship, 'The Power' has been in imperious form, taking all but one of the following major televised tournaments.

Only James Wade's success at the UK Open prevented a sweep for Taylor, while the man from Stoke also defended his Grand Slam of Darts title in Wolverhampton last week. (full story...)

Medalist at PJ's has signs of improvement!

Things are moving along just fine. It appears that all the divisions are up to date on their games and we have no forfeits out there. This week we took off for Thanksgiving, play will continue on the week of the 30th as normal. To help every one plan out their holiday season, I want to remind every one that Medalist will be taking a break the week of 12/21 and return to normal play the week of 01/04/2009.

About a quarter of the people playing this time around are showing signs of improvement.

Darts star Montgomery targets Masters success

Darts star Montgomery targets Masters success

Nov 26 2008 by Paul Thomson, East Kilbride News

DARTS star Ross ‘The Boss’ Montgomery is gearing up for the Winmau World Masters next weekend, but he’s not sure if his first round opponent will turn up.

The 45-year-old from Greenhills has been putting in the practice ahead of next weekend’s televised tournament and he admitted he’s not sure if his first round opponent will make an appearance.

Ross, who is due to face Indian Nitin Kumar on December 5 at the event in Yorkshire, said: “I’m quite happy with the draw I’ve got overall, but I’m not sure if my first round opponent will turn up. It sounds weird, but experience tells me that guys who have got so far to travel don’t end up making it.

“It’s the World Masters and they send out invitations to people from all over, but there’s been plenty of times when guys haven’t turned up because they don’t have the money to travel to England.

“I don’t know much about the guy, but I hope he turns up. I want to play my matches, but on the other hand he could be dangerous because he is an unknown, so I will have to be careful if he does show up.”

Ross, who is ranked sixth in the world rankings, just missed out on automatic qualification for the last 16 of the tournament and has to play four matches before making it to the televised stage.

The Winmau World Masters involves players from seventy countries, including darts champions from over 140 national and international events worldwide.

Around 300 players will attend this year’s event, which will mark the 35th anniversary of the oldest established major event in world darts.

And Ross is targeting the televised stages of the tournament after negotiating some tricky early matches.

He added: “If I win my group then I would be looking at facing Gary Robson in the last 16, but it’s going to be difficult because there’s plenty of darts to be played before I get there.

“But I’m feeling good about my game at the moment – I just won the Liberton Open in Edinburgh after beating Mike Leitch – so everything’s going well. I’ll be putting in a lot of practice before I travel and I’m hoping for a good showing at the Winmau.”

There was some other good news for Ross this week when he was announced as the number 10 seed for the World Championships at the Lakeside in January.

But ‘The Boss’ thought he might have been seeded a couple of places higher. He explained: “It’s great to be the number 10 seed, but I’m a bit disappointed I didn’t get a bit higher up than that.

“I did a lot of hard work this year and thought I might have been ranked eighth, but I’m over the moon to be at the Lakeside again and I will just get on with playing my game when I get there.

“My seeding means I won’t be playing another seeded player until the second round so that’s great. But I’ve still got a couple of tournaments to concentrate on before the Lakeside.”

Ross is currently looking for sponsors to go on his shirt for the Lakeside Competition which will be screened live on BBC television from January 3 until January 11. Anyone interested in sponsoring him should email
rossmontgomery1"AT"yahoo.co.uk.

Acomb aces win big-two battle

THE two unbeaten teams in division one of the John Smith’s Bulmers Men’s Darts League met and Acomb’s Adam Thompson (19), Mark Hartley (14, 180) and Keith Turner (180) ensured a 7-2 win over Clifton.

The victory was achieved despite the efforts of Clifton’s Martyn Turner (14, 16), Neil Hart (101 c/o for 15), Chris Thompson (20) and John Gothard (180).

Fulfordgate’s John Mooring (19), Mark Greenley (15), Andy Tams (108 c/o for 21) and Craig Wedge (19) could not prevent a 5-4 defeat to Volunteers, whose Paul Botterill (15), Dave Mason (19, 19) and Mick Harris (20) made the difference.

New Inn’s Jamie Harding (180 for 13) had the fastest leg of the week in a 5-4 win at Crescent ‘B’.

Shepherds had Dave Gibbons (16, 20) and Tony Cooper (16, 180) playing well but Ron Simpson (135 c/o), Paul Keers (180) and a deciding game win by Rich Plumber and Kel Frankel gave Crescent ‘A’ a 5-4 win.

Britannia’s Steve Snowden (111 c/o for 21) and Pip Oliver (100 c/o for 15) could not prevent a 6-3 loss at Flag.

Darts: Westoe arrow in on victory

THE Westoe ran out 10-7 winners over visitors The Trams – after being 3-0 down – in the latest round of matches in the Vic Young South Tyneside Super League.

Trams won the first three legs. but a Westoe fightback saw them take the last two pairs to go into the singles just 3-2 down.

A Paul Hunter victory and a draw between Paul Charlton and Jackie Shone gave the Trams a useful 6-3 advantage.

However, wins by Westoe’s Ian Jackson, John Ramsay and Colin Umpleby, and a draw between Derek Bland and Mark Cairns, gave Westoe the victory.

The Alberta Bar played the Sunderland Lads from the New Demi and led 3-2 going into the singles.

Wins by Mick Woods and Billy Gowans and a draw between Ernie Ives and Craig Ryan gave the Alberta a 8-3 lead, a victory by the Demi’s Miles Turnbull then cutting the lead to 8-5.

However, success for Robbie Young and a draw between Dave Sinclair and Andy King gave the The Jarrow Lads a 11-6 triumph.

There were 180s for Ernie Ives and Andy King.

The derby between the Catholic Club teams saw the B side lead 4-1 going into the singles.

A draw between John Harte and Dave Whitehead was followed up by victories for the B team’s Dave Hatch and Paul Johnson to give them a 9-2 lead.

Draws between Trevor Young and Les Bulha and Deka Kennedy and Andy Nellist were eclipsed by a win by Ernie Hudson to give the B team a 13-4 verdict.

Annie McCarthy’s played the Jolly Stewart and found themselves 3-2 down going into the singles.

A draw between Bob Urwin and Paul Wood was followed up by a victory by Jolly’s Dennis Holmes.

Derek Boak then pulled two points back for Annie’s and, with Jimmy Hudson- Jeff Houghton and Norman Davison-Neil Tate drawing their matches, the game was 8-7 to the Jolly – but John Naughton won the last two points to give Annie’s a 9-8 victory. (story source...)

One Dart to appear at charity exhibition

WORLD darts star Peter Manley will be taking on allcomers during an exhibition of his skills for charity at Ludgvan Community Centre on Saturday, December 13 from 7.30pm onwards.

Nicknamed "One Dart" for his knack of hitting doubles with his first dart, Manley, 46, is currently ranked No 13 in the world, and has been a PDC World Championship finalist three times, twice being beaten 7-0 by Phil Taylor.

This famously led to a long-running feud between the two men after the 2002 final culminating in his refusal to shake Taylor's hand at the end of the match. These days a more relaxed Manley is better liked by fans since changing his entrance music to Is This The way to Amarillo?.

During his appearance at Ludgvan, Manley (pictured), who is co-sponsored by Penzance-based Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding, will be playing a series of about 15 games against local players and all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Precious Lives Appeal. There will also be a raffle.

The Dart Board, Its History and Development

The dart board has been around for many years, the first ones were simple barrel ends. They progressed to purpose made wooden dart boards usually made of elm. Unfortunately they were prone to splitting so they were soaked overnight in water which also had the benefit of closing up the dart holes as the wood swelled.A company called Nodor changed all that and were the first company to produce the Bristle dart board, patenting the design in the 1930’s. There was a myth that pig bristles were used in the manufacture, but pig bristle was never used, instead the bristles were small pieces of rope bundled together and compressed to form a smooth surface with a natural self healing property that lasts for a very long time.

Nodor got a patent for the design and so were the only manufacturer for 25 years or so for the life of the patent. After the patent expired other manufacturers entered the arena most notably Winmau . And you thought Nodor was a funny name. Apparently the name Winmau was made up from the first three letters of the two names of the wife of the company director “Winifred Maud” hence Winmau.

Winmau and Nodor fought for supremacy in the dart board market for many years until Nodor eventually took over the Winmau brand. During this time Winmau came up with their famous Blade board with ultra thin wire separators and Nodor came up with the first staple free bulls eye dart board.

The bristle boards were used in all the big tournaments that started in the 70’s and are still used today in the prestigious tournaments like the Las Vegas classic and the British Lakeside tournament.

Then came Electronics, the electronic dart board came on the scene and changed the game overnight. The odd thing about electronic boards is they are covered in hundreds of small holes for the special soft tip darts to enter. At first glance you think how can the dart get into those holes so exactly? The answer is the holes are at the bottom of a small dimple in the board, which guides the dart tip into the hole. And it works very well with nowhere near the amount of bounce outs you might expect. Also of course those holes have sensors, which tell the electronics where the dart has landed and records the score of the dart automatically. This was a great boon to darters as they no longer had to keep score and the boards could be networked to collect all the scores from the boards on a computer, great for tournaments.

The difference with the electronic dart board are that you have to use soft tip darts, and the tips are made of plastic so as not to damage the board. (Never use normal steel tip darts on an electronic board) Also the maximum weight of dart allowed on most electronic dart boards is 20 grams.

There is now a new technology, Bristletech dart boards, which are electronic dart boards that can take steel tip darts as well as the soft tip variety, so you have the best of both worlds. The Bristletech technology is set to dominate the dart board market in the future.

The archers of old would marvel at how their game has developed and I’m sure there is more to come, especially with the development of Bristle type boards combined with electronics. The electronic game is popular in both Europe and the US and who knows, the big tournaments like the Las Vegas classic may go that way too.

Phil: Blame One Dart for my wins

I WOKE up very tired and very proud on Monday morning after winning the final of the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts.

I beat Terry Jenkins 18-9 on Sunday in Wolverhampton — but the scoreline doesn’t tell you what a battle I had against him.

He had pipped Raymond van Barneveld and Gary Anderson in close matches to reach the final and that may have tired him out a little bit and caused some of his missed doubles.

But I didn’t do it the easy way either during the tournament. I lost to Andy Jenkins in the group stage — something he hasn’t let me forget since — and was 5-1 down to Simon Whitlock in the quarter-finals. (full article...)

Dart players attempt to break world record

EIGHT dart players from Mandurah, Rockingham, Harvey and Bunbury dart associations will attempt to break a 17-year-old world record this weekend.

Brothers Justin and Jamie Miles, father and son Dominic and Joe Comito Lawrence Ryder, Dave Hughes, John Kiley, Nigel Hartley are aiming to break the world record of using the least amount of darts to reach the score of 1,000,001.

The current record of 36,583 dart shots was set in America in 1991.

There is no time limit and the eight local players will attempt the new record from tomorrow night until Sunday in an industrial shed in Pinjarra.

Playing in pairs at hour and half-hour intervals non-stop, an average of between 40 to 50 darts will be shot per hour.

Under strict instructions from Guinness World Records, all players will have to keep a log book and the whole event will be recorded.

The eight players nominated to break to record all in the top 10 to 12 players in the A-grade Peel Darts Association; the age of the players range from 18 to 57 combine for more than 100 years’ experience in playing darts.

The idea to break the world record came from Mandurah Darts Association president Dave Bickley.

He originally wanted to attempt the record four years ago to raise money but due to night shifts and other reasons it never came to fruition until now.

“We’re doing it now as a challenge for ourselves,” Bickley said.

“The guys are all very keen and even if we don’t break it this time they’re already talking of making another attempt in the near future.”

Anyone is welcome to attend the record breaking attempt.

Call Dave Bickley 158 327 for more information.

The Mandurah Darts Association season will start on March 5 with team nominations to be finalised by January 26.

Anyone interested in playing darts can phone Bickley or club secretary Phil Metcalf on 9586 9739 for further details. (story source...)

Marshall moves into top spot in Irish Darts Players Championship

By Jason O'Connor

Wednesday November 26 2008

THERE was great joy for Tralee's Sean Marshall in Abbeyleix, Co Laois last Saturday as he won the second round of the Irish Darts Players Championship, a feat that puts in the number one position in the Player Championships at the moment on 22 points.

With over 270 players taking part in the competition Marshall had to come through eight gruelling matches to claim victory in Saturday's competition beating John Elder from Antrim six legs to one in the semi-final. Marshall then faced Kildare's Martin Murphy in the final and eventually come on victorious on a score line of 6-4. Speaking to The Kerryman, Marshall admitted that it was a tough victory for him.

"The first four legs went against the throw and I was lucky to break his throw in the ninth leg and win the tenth one. Overall I was delighted with how I played last weekend particularly hitting 10 180's in the tournament. I hope to keeps things going now heading into the next round in Tramore in January and it's a great feeling to be ranked No 1 in the championship at the moment," he said.

Kilflynn's Shane Nolan was knocked out in the second round of the competition but only after putting up a great fight against Dubliner Shane O'Connor, a player who will compete in the PDC World Championships next month. Castleisland duo Mike O'Sullivan and James Broderick were two other players to play well over the weekend as well as Milltown's Dale McCarthy and Killarney man Matt Lacey who lost to Elder in the final of his board. There are six rounds to this championship and the next round will take place in Tramore, Co. Waterford on January 11th next.

Meanwhile in other darts news it has been confirmed that top PDC professionals Terry 'The Bull' Jenkins, who won the Johnny McEvoy Gold Dart Classic at the Killarney Darts Festival three weeks ago and former two time world champion Denis 'The Menace' Priestley will play an exhibition match at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee in aid of the Carers Association on Sunday December 7 at 8.30pm. Standard tickets for the event are € 25; VIP reception at 7.30pm with tickets priced at € 50.

THE fight for top four places ensured a superb finale to the Pickering Individual Darts League season.

Terry Temple had wrapped up top spot the previous week, and the in-form Phil Bointon kept his nerve to clinch runners-up spot by two points from Steve Oldfield.

Bointon picked up five points from his two matches, with a 3-2 victory over Steve Taylor and a 3-2 defeat to Temple. (full article...)

Dartoid's World 11-26-08

Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving!

If you’re anything like me – married and male – you seldom go to the grocery, except to buy beer or, perhaps, on weekend game days to tag along with your wife and fill up on the sample products the little old ladies give away for free.

Shorty after I was married my wife handed me a list and asked me to go shopping for her. I agreed because, well, that’s what new husbands or husbands who’ve been married for almost thirty years do. We go INSANE...

Pacquiao darts tilt at GenSan

spacer
The country’s top darters are expected to see action in the P2-million Manny Pacquiao International Darts Classic slated on Dec. 12 at the Lagao gym in General Santos City, the organizing National Dart Federation of the Philippines (NDFP) announced yesterday.

Darters from as far as Baguio City in north and other key cities have already registered for the country’s biggest darts tournament in honor of boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, himself a darter.

The GenSan fighter has already sponsored previous big darts tournaments in Digos, Davao del Sur and Gen. Santos City.

"We expect more than 500 darters to join the event. Marikina for instance is sending a contingent of 16 darters and not all of them are vying for the cash prizes even if the men’s open champion gets to receive a record P320,000 cash prize," said NDFP’s Tito Soncuya.

Others who have already signified their interest to take part are OFW darters based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Darts for Life

YOUNG District Darts Association held a very successful presentation on Saturday night at the Criterion Hotel with several highlights including the award of honorary Life Membership to Lloyd Foley who has been playing here in Young for 40 years this year.

Lloyd, who played for the Australian Hotel in the B grade competition this year, has also spent many years through the 80’s in the A Grade competition as well as representing Young in the intertown competitions and been a dedicated member of the Darts Committee for the past ten years.

‘Razza’ Miller, another life member, was back in Young to present the award in “recognition for all the work Lloyd has done giving something back to Darts and the community.” (full article...)

PORTLAND AREA Dart Association (PADA)

Hi everybody in the Portland Dart area and who is willing to come to Portland,

As I already wrote in another topic, I want to start a tournament series for the Portland area soon. I will publish from now on all information, stats and more on my webside LINK and here in SEWA. The flyers will be available in all the dart locations in PDX and of course here in as a download.

So please - CLICK ME - to download the flyer.

This tournament series will be open to everybody! Please find some facts below!

The series
One monthly tournament from December to June with a pointbased ranking system, payout and Jackpot for “Masters-Tournament” of the Top 8-16 players (related to overall attendee)

1. - ENTRY - 15$ per Tournament

2. - TOURNAMENT AMOUNT - 8 ranking tournaments + MASTERS

3. - DIRECT PAYOUT - 10$ x amount of attendees. Pot will be split in a certain percentage pattern to the Top 8 players.

4. - MASTERS JACKPOT - 5$ x amount of attendees are going to fill the Jackpot for the MASTERS

5. - RANKING POINTS - Certain point pattern to Top 12 of each tournament. Points will be added to the ranking points and this will give you your ranking position

6. - MASTERS TOURNAMENT - Tournament of the TOP players after the final ranking tournament in May – (average 25 people per ranking tournament -->1000$ tournament)

7. - LADIES JACKPOT - Each Tourney will get a bonus jackpot for ladies. 3$ per player will be splitted 50%-30%-20% to the Top 3 women of the day

An Example

24 people with an entry of 15$ are in the tournament. The total amount of money would be 360$. 240$ we will put into the payment of the actual tournament, 120$ will be added to the Jackpot of the "MASTERS".

1st Place ~ 30% ~ 70$ - 12 Points
2nd Place ~ 18.5% ~ 45$ - 9 Points
3rd place ~ 12.5% ~ 30$ - 7 Points
4th place ~ 10.5% ~ 25$ - 5 Points
2x5th place ~ 8.0 % ~ 20$ - 3 Points
2x7th place ~ 6.25% ~ 15$ - 2 Points
4x9th place – 0$ - 1 Point

If we have an average of 25 attendees after all 8 tourneys, the top 16 of the ranking would be invited to play the MASTERS for 1000$ in total, without any entry fee. If the average is higher than 25, we would have more than 1000$ and vice verca

Buckeye Open results?

Isen Veljic won the 501 mens singles over Mark Neilsen. Shawn Brenneman and Jay Barlow met eachother in the mens cricket singles no clue who won (think the split it anyway).

Larry Butler and Timmy Nichol won the cricket doubles over Isen and myself. Steve Hertzfeld came back after struggles with illness to win doubles 501 with Roger Gansen. I believe they beat Butler/Nichol in the final.
any Buckeye Open results?

DARTS: Battling Oxon ring changes

Changes have been made by Oxfordshire as they bid for their first win in the British Darts Organisation Inter-Counties Championship Premier Division when they take on Hampshire at East Challow British Legion this weekend.

Oxon, who were runners-up in the 2008 Oxfordshire Sports Awards, have drawn two and lost one of their first three games, and stand seventh in the table – one place below Hampshire. (full article...)

DARTS: Moss reels off double maximum

Nuffield Lounge were already trailing 4-0 following wins by Mick Richardson, Mathew Brain, Percy Brain and Tony Lane before Moss starting smacking the lipstick to reduce the deficit. There are some tournaments coming up in the future, the next one being the Cabin Fever Reliever in Cooper Landing. There are fliers at some of the local bars. This tournament is set for Dec. 19th and 20th with the Masters shoot happening Dec. 19th.

To that end, I would like to try and get a couple of people qualified for the masters shoot. I have a commitment from three people to shoot, hopefully this Saturday at PJ's starting at 5pm. Okay, I will register folks at 5pm, but I want to start no later than 5:15 pm. I have an engagement later that night.

Big John bounces back to darts spotlight

JOHN Opio returned to the winning podium after a two-year drought by snatching the Uganda international darts Open in Jinja on Sunday.

The Gulu darts club guru saw off Emmanuel Bitwire (Mulago) 4-0 in the all-Ugandan singles final.

‘Big John’ Opio, as the former URA darts club star is known, last tasted victory in 2006. After being crowned USPA Darts Player of the Year, Opio faded out into a perennial looser until Sunday. (full article...)

From... American Darts Blog

While it’s true that along with poker, pool and darts are the main games of rec rooms across America, I haven’t seen anyone tackle the differences between the two games. And specifically, give the top 5 reasons that darts are better than pool.

So, I thought I’d do it . . .

Reason #5 : It Takes Less Room - A friend of mine has the ultimate man cave, complete with 8 person bar, televisions, bar sink, kegmeister, refrigerator, etc. Swap that dartboard out for a pool table, and you’ll be left with the tv’s. It’s no fun having a rec room where you have to stand. (full entry...)
