Eccles picked up 40 percent of the votes in the third round of voting to win the sponsorship, ahead of Chris Mason, Kirk Shepherd and Remco van Eijden. (full article...)

DARTS: Riverside spring cup final upset

RIVERSIDE caused something of an upset as they lifted the Division One Cup at the Spalding and District Ladies' League's finals night.
They poured the agony on league runners-up Fenway A, who again had to settle for second-best after a 10-5 defeat.

Fourth-placed finishers in the league campaign, Riverside's Di Langston, Linda Pack and Angie Parrish won to secure some silverware for the Surfleet side.

Tina Gent and Helen Buffham notched wins in vain for Fenway.

The Division Two Cup final between Holbeach USC A and New Saracen's Head was a much closer affair. (full article...)

Dartoid's World 3-31-09

Greetings!

It isn't often that Dartoid's World passes on the writings of someone else, let alone someone sane – however it is rare that word leaks out, such as those below from Superstars of Darts creator, Andy Fairclough, that portend such massive and negative ramifications for the sport of darts in America.

It behooves all of us to take this report seriously and act accordingly.

I just wanted to let you know that the Cleveland Darter Club will be holding the Cleveland Dart Extravaganza XXXII / 2009 the weekend of May 1-3, 2009 ($10,000+). The Region 4-6 Youth Regional will be held in conjunction with the Tournament on Sunday, May 3. There will be Youth events on Saturday May 2 at the Tournament. Region 4-6 is willing to combine with any other adjacent regions in Area 4 to hold one Regional, if any of the other Regions would like, and hopefully we would have enough participants to be able to have girls and boys in separate brackets. Can you contact the Youth reps for the other Regions to see if any of them want to combine with 4-6? The last two years we have combined with Fort Wayne which I think is 4-1. And 4-4 (Michigan) isn't too far. If they would like to combine with 4-6, they can call me (216-313-0556) or email me at rd4-6@adodarts.com. Thanks, Rose

Career flight path

A 17-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl is aiming for a lucrative career as a darts professional – thanks to winning her first match after taking part just to make up the numbers.

Kirsty Hutchinson has become a star in seven months since making that successful debut in a pub in Barnard Castle.

She now plays for four teams, often beating older and more experienced men and women, and has been selected for a young English squad to take part in a four-nation tournament in Ireland, in May.

Kirsty is studying childcare in the sixth form at Teesdale School and was working towards a career as a nanny or in a toddlers’ nursery.

“I don’t want to do that now – I’ve set my heart on becoming a professional darts player,”

she said at her Middletonin- Teesdale home. “I just love the game and want to do it for a living.”

She played only in the kitchen at home before her father, Gary Hutchinson, heard that a ladies’ team at the Beaconsfield pub was short of players and suggested she could make up the numbers.

Kirsty still plays for the team on Sundays, as well as a mixed team on Fridays. She also throws for Durham County senior team and youth teams. When not in matches, she plays in friendlies at the Bridge Inn near her home.

She also plays for up to three hours a night at home and regularly beats her father and brother Graham, both experienced players for local teams.

In the Irish event, a Youth Friendship tournament, she will line up against teams from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Eire.

“I’m just glad that my dad put my name forward for the pub team, otherwise I might never have got started playing in matches,” she said. “Everyone says I’m really good at it, so there’s no reason why I shouldn’t work hard at it and turn it into a successful career.”

Sue Hill, landlady of the Beaconsfield, said: “Kirsty amazes everyone with her skill. Players from opposing teams in league matches often say they wish they had her in their lineup.”

She is now looking for sponsorship to help pay travel expenses and entry fees for tournaments.

Any firm interested can contact her on 01833- 640182.

From a city in Georgia: Lilburn outlaws darts.....

I'm not sure how many of you remember this story, but it seems that there have been new developments! Read the new article at the end of this post!

By Randy Cox
Staff Correspondent

LILBURN — An overflow crowd of more than 100 patrons from the Sports Fan bar showed up at the Lilburn City Council meeting to express their opposition to an ordinance which prohibits 17 liquor-serving establishments from letting their patrons participate in karaoke, pool, darts, poker and trivia contests.
The council, by a 3-to-1 vote, passed the ordinance in the regular business session before a packed house. The ordinance will allow passive entertainment such as television viewing, ambient music, and video games, but will not allow the more interactive games and entertainment. Councilman Ken Swaim, who voted against the ordinance, said he wanted to add karaoke and trivia to the measure.
Several residents and nonresidents of Lilburn spoke against the ordinance, including Ray Pritchett, a resident of Lilburn for 60 years, who told the council: “The problem that I have with the ordinance — karaoke, pool, … why does that bother anyone? Why should it bother y'all … leave them alone. There’s more things in the city of Lilburn to be discussing than this.”
“We need to do something to bring the businesses into the city instead of running them out,” he said.
Mayor Jack Bolton, who has had to take the brunt of the criticism, said additional changes to allow some interactive entertainment was discussed by the Council, but that it “wasn’t prepared for any additional changes tonight.”
Bolton said people are welcome to party in establishments outside the city, but he isn’t interested in the crime and problems associated with bars. Some of the criminal cases involving this type of establishment include disorderly conduct, fighting, gambling, DUI and battery, according to the council.
Richard Sullivan of Snellville, had a comment from the business perspective.
“I would be curious to know what businesses would think about what is happening here tonight,” he said, adding that he didn’t see any harm in businesses letting their patrons participate in these interactive games to sustain their livelihood.
Jenny Crawford, who works at the sports bar, brought in a petition with 300 signatures on it protesting the ordinance.
“If they take away these activities, they’ll have to go somewhere else,” she said.
Leeann Marshall of Lilburn said she thinks pool, karaoke and darts should be allowed.
“We pay our taxes, too … we have the right to enjoy our freedom,” she said.
Woody McClure, franchise holder for the American Poolplayers Association, said about 400 residents in Lilburn play pool, and some frequent the sports bars within the city limits.
“I hope you will reconsider to let billiards be a part of this ordinance,” he said. “We operate in a manner so we don’t allow an uproar in playing pool.”
Bolton said he has nothing against karaoke, but their original intent in licensing liquor by the drink was incidental at an eating establishment. He said karaoke and other types of activities are allowed in Lilburn, just not in places that serve alcohol. The city only has permits for restaurants and the law says that at least 50 percent of the restaurant’s revenues must come from food sales.
“I would have to say the Sports Fan did a great job in getting their people out tonight,” said Bolton, adding that he’s open to suggestions for recrafting the ordinance. “This ordinance is a work in progress,” he said.

LILBURN, Ga. - More than 100 people packed a city council meeting to voice their opposition to a city law that bans karaoke, dancing, cards and trivia contests at restaurants that also serve alcohol.

Many in the crowd Monday night came to support the Sports Fan Bar & Grill, a local tavern where they go to sing and to play darts, trivia and pool.

Ray Pritchett, a Lilburn resident for 60 years, suggested banning song and games from places that sell alcohol was un-American.

...

Meanwhile, council member Scott Batterton warned that the council should stick to its commitment to keep bars out of Lilburn, which is northeast of Atlanta.

Lilburn Mayor Jack Bolton, who has taken the brunt of the criticism, said people are welcome to party in establishments outside the city, but he does not want the crime and problems associated with bars.

Ga. city reverses karaoke ban

Posted on: Friday, 17 April 2009, 15:22 CDT

An Atlanta suburb has brought back karaoke, allowing restaurants once more to lure customers with sing-alongs, darts, pool and trivia contests.

The Lilburn council banned "interactive entertainment" at establishments that serve alcohol two years ago. The action came amidst a controversy over a specific restaurant, which has since closed.

"Lilburn has matured, and we want to keep it vibrant," Mayor Diana Preston told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. "Our focus is keeping our business community strong and that means a diversity of businesses."

The council revised its liquor law again Tuesday.

Bob Carmen, owner of the Oyster Barn Grill & Bar said he thought the ban was "provincial." But he said he does not plan to bring back the karaoke machines and other entertainment paraphernalia that the previous owner removed in 2007. Instead he says his focus is to lure customers with his food. (story source...)

Exclusive Darts1 Interview with Terry Jenkins

Terry Jenkins, current no. 5 of the world, two times winner of the Antwerp Open and Runner Up of the Premier League, World Grand Prix, World Matchplay and Las Vegas Desert Classic, was available for this exclusive Darts1 interview, thanks a lot.

When and why did you start to play darts?

I think I was around 14. My older brother and his friends often played darts at home and I wanted to join them. I always did win.

from the email inbox... 3-18-09 - ADO Regional 2-2

Hi all.

Just a reminder for this weekend and I have attached the flyer for the Pat Murphy Open. Hope to see you all there.

Also, the men's Masters regional will be at the Fleet Reserve in Poway on Sunday. Start time will be 10am.

Unfortunately, we did not have any women to participate in the ladies regional last weekend, however, if I can gather some interest and get some raffle tickets going at the Pat Murphy, the ladies could play a regional on Sunday and start at noon. Please ladies, if you are interested, let me know and find me at PMO to get things going.

See y'all this weekend!

Take care!!!

Anne
