Win PDC World Championship Darts 2009 for Nintendo Wii!

So, think you’ve got what it takes to beat the darts pros and win the World Championship Darts 2009 title? Well thanks to our friends at Oxygen Games, we’re (www.wiids.co.uk) giving you the chance to find out in another of our great competitions! We’ve (www.wiids.co.uk) got three copies of PDC World Championship Darts 2009 for the Nintendo Wii to give away, and taking part is easy.

“Choose to play as or against a choice of 18 PDC players including Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, James ‘The Machine’ Wade and Wayne ‘Hawaii 501′ Mardle. Or get in on the action yourself and customise your own male or female professional darts characters.

Each Pro performs to real life averages and has their own set of attributes, including stamina, belief, ability to cope with pressure, concentration, accuracy and of course their favourite check out bed. Will it be double tops, or downstairs to “the basement” for double 3?

The all new PDC World Championship Darts 2009 on the Nintendo Wii gives you the feel of the true darts physics, providing a more natural throwing experience, realistic dart collisions and bed bouncing sound effects.”

Each dart player has their own nickname, entrance and signature theme tune, and all you have to do to enter our competition is tell us:

“What would be your darts nickname and what piece of music would you want as your entrance theme?”

As usual, just leave your answers in the comments section below, and every comment left will count as one entry into our random draw. Our standard rules apply, and the competition will close on Wednesday 17th June at 4pm, when we’ll hold a raffle and the first three names out of the hat will find themselves the new owners of this fantastic game.

Don’t forget - you need to enter with a valid email address as we’ll (www.wiids.co.uk) need to get in touch with you in you win, and we’ll only accept one entry per person, so don’t try to cheat the system! And don’t worry if you don’t win, as you’ll be able to scoop a copy for either your Wii or DS from your local game retailer on Friday 29th May.

Good luck!

Dartoid's World - Thursday, May 28, 2009

Greetings!

I am about to frickin' depart for the BEST frickin' darts tournament in the world and I don't mind tellin' ya that I can barely frickin' wait!

I haven't missed Chuck and Stick's Chicken COOP Open since 2006 when I first took Mike Edwards up on his invitation to venture into the Ozarks to have a go against some of the good old boys. Thinking Deliverance, I had for years hesitated to accept Edward's offer.

Seriously, there is one thing I have no interest whatsoever in experiencing.

Wade's Wembley Wonder! - 25 May 2009

JAMES WADE claimed the 2009 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts with a 13-8 victory over Mervyn King at the Wembley Arena on Monday night - as Phil Taylor's reign in the event was sensationally ended.

Taylor had won all four previous Premier Leagues and was an odds-on favourite to take the £125,000 winner's cheque this season, only for King to produce a 10-6 upset victory in the semi-finals.

King, a Premier League debutant this year, was unable to repeat the feat in the final, though, as 26-year-old Wade followed up his semi-final victory over Raymond van Barneveld with triumph in the decider. (full report...)

She's hit the bullseye on a national level! Savannah Open

Collins is competing this weekend in Pooler at the Savannah Open Dart Tournament Collins is competing this weekend in Pooler at the Savannah Open Dart Tournament
Collins started playing darts at age 17 Collins started playing darts at age 17

By Melissa Maikos - Bio | Email

POOLER, GA (WTOC) - She was right on target when she lined up in front of a dart board a few weeks ago. And Kim Collins hit the bullseye enroute to a national championship!

Collins competed in the 2009 Masters National and came in first to claim her first national championship. 23 women competed in the competition and Collins was #1. She'll represent the United States in teh Winmau World Masters in England as a part of the World Cup Team.

This is the first time since 1994 that our region will be represented in the World Masters and the first time ever that a female will be competiting.

Collins graduated from South Effingham in 2001 and has been playing darts since she was 17 years old. She said she picked up the game for fun and then realized just how far she can take her game.

This weekend, Kim is competing at the 29th annual Savannah Open Darts Competition in Pooler. It's a good chance for her to fine tune her game and compete with some old acquaintances.

"We have alot of fun, getting together with people you don't see but four or five times a year." she says, "So it's fun, I did play this morning with Payton in mixed doubles, then I'll play with the lady in ladies doubles. All weekend you have the different events. Then you play singles by yourself, and then you have the luck of the draw at night so everybody can just have fun."

The World Cup will take place in Bridlington, England in September. (article source...)

LEVEL BEST - uniBoffin - uniBlog 21/05/2009

Now you might disagree, but I reckon I’ve been giving my readers a bit too easy a time of late. My last few uniBlogs have tended to be fairly benevolent offerings, discussing comparatively straightforward topics like barrel and shaft materials. OK, the last time I did sneak in a mention of yaw nodes, but by and large the complexities of flight dynamics have taken a back seat to more engineeringy aspects of dart design. (full blog post...)

Final Score is a happy outcome - DIARY OF A DART PLAYER - 20 May 2009 - By Andy Relf

After the disappointment of not qualifyintg for this year's UK Open at Bolton, I had to get focused on looking ahead to the rest of the year.
The week started well when I received an e-mail from Stephen Holliday, owner of Final Score Sports Shops, based in Heathfield, Uckfield and Crowborough.

Stephen had been in contact for a few weeks, and I even ended up playing for his team on one occasion, in a cup match which his team from The Bell in Burwash progressed through to the final, and subsequently went on to win. Stephen had shown interest in offering some sponsorship towards my entry fees for PDC competitions, and his e-mail was to confirm this, a great start to the week and an offer which was very gratefully received. Dart leagues join up to spur growth

London has a long tradition of supporting the sport of darts, but it is a history that has seen better days.

The 65-year-old London District Men’s Dart League once had a membership of more than 1,000 players. The London Ladies Dart League has 37 years of history behind it while there was also growth in Youth Darts London and Area.

Over time, however, those numbers have faded. Today the men’s league has about 550 members, the women around 265 and the youth league has perhaps 55 competitors.

To help combat that trend, the city’s leagues have come together under one umbrella as the Greater London Association of Darts (GLAD). The association was created to help grow the sport by keeping darts in the public eye while also attracting new players to the various leagues that exist across the city.

Sheppey Darts Classic left with funding shortages - by Luke Cawdell

Sponsors are still being sought for the seventh Sheppey Darts Classic which takes places at the start of June.

The event at Merlins is a major crowd puller on the island but funding has been lower than normal this year and organiser Tony Cox fears there could be a shortfall.Darts

He said: "Because of the financial situation we’re in a lot of companies have had to drop out and some have dropped the amount they contribute, although we are grateful for what they give.

"At the moment we’re about £1,500 short and if we don’t get any more sponsors I’ll have to dip into my own pocket."

The prize fund for the event still stands at £7,000.

"That’s what we’ve advertised and we’re not going to change that," said Cox. "In terms of prize fund and entrants this is the biggest event in the South of England."

Cox also admits entrants are not at their usual levels and has urged competitors to book their place quick, before the May 23 deadline.

He said: "Local people are leaving it late, as are the professionals, and I think they just need a little push."

*Anyone wishing to help sponsor the event, no matter how small or large, can contact Tony Cox 01795 875263. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.sheppeydarts.com

Review of Isles' darts season - 11 May 2009

LAST August heralded the start of the darts season, and the Singles League took centre stage. After nine matches Willie Reid was leading Division A, as was David Macmillan in Division B, and in Division C Willie Lockerby was leading the pack.
On the last Saturday in August the Open Handicap Doubles was won by Willie and Jamie Reid, and on the same day the Sea Angling Club won the Donnie Bookie Cup, thumping the Star 5-0 in the final.

September saw the Heb Coachworks Ltd Darts League start in earnest, and topping the table after the first game was the Caley after a 6-2 win over the Star. All the other games finished in a draw. Into week two, and the ICTS's Andy Dowie had a 160 checkout against Murdo Alex of the Rangers Club.

Also in September the League lost one of its teams as the Caber had to pull out due to player unavailability. The month ended with the Sea Angling in pole position, a point ahead of the Caley.

World’s best dart players coming to city this August

Posted By Sean Meyer

The best dart players in the world are coming to London this summer and John McGregor couldn’t be happier.

John, sales manager at London-based British Darts and Games, the largest dart supplier in Canada, was at a tournament not too long ago when he started talking to an official with the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) who had the first ever Canadian stop on their tour in Kitchener last year. After things in Kitchener didn’t go as well as officials had hoped, John took the opportunity to start selling London.

“The PDC hold events all over, Netherlands, South America, Australia, the United States,” John says. “There is a tournament in Las Vegas that is simply huge. Well they decided to have one in Canada for the first time last year. It didn’t go as well as they hoped, so I spoke up about London.

“We have an international airport, the hotels, and the most fabulous leagues in London. So we contacted the London Economic Development Corp. which helped us put together some meetings; that was December 2008. Tourism London did a lot to help. We came up with a plan; the PDC liked it; they have signed a three-year deal to have their event here in London.”

The PDC Players Championship and the accompanying London Ontario Open will take place Aug. 14-16 at the Hilton London.

The PDC Players Championship will attract among the very best players in the world to compete for a prize pool of almost $40,000. When including the Friday Draw Doubles tournament (where professionals can be paired up with local competitors) on Friday, Aug. 14, and the London Ontario Open (a tournament where anyone can sign up), on Saturday, Aug. 15, the prize pool climbs to over $47,000.

Prize money for the events is based on pounds sterling; therefore the actual prize amounts in Canadian dollars may fluctuate.

“This is going to be an amazing event,” John says. “We are really proud to have it in London. It’s difficult to tell (how many people might come), but 800 people attended last year’s event in Kitchener. We have already had more exposure than they got last year. We have sent information to our clients across the country. There are people talking about it. There is a real excitement for this event.

“We have very competent local players, we have tremendous players too. I think it will be great for people to get involved in the Friday blind draw where they can be partnered with one of the top players in the world. On the Saturday is the first London Open, which is open to anyone. And with entry fees of $15-$20, there really will be something for everyone.”

For example, it will cost $20 for someone to sign up for the men’s singles tournament at the London Ontario Open and the opportunity to win the $400 first prize.

It is the PDC championship however John is most excited about.

“Sunday is the PDC shoot, it’s open to the public at large if you have the $160 entry fee. That one you have to register ahead of time, but for everything else you can just come out the day of,” John says. “People are going to see the pros from Canada, the U.S., Holland, France, Australia. These are the people coming to this shoot. They all want to play the big tournaments and that’s what this is.”

Priestley: Mardle a mistake - Menace wants to see change to selection process

They always pick Wayne Mardle for some strange reason. I think it's because they always want somebody who's going to finish last all of the time.

Dennis Priestley believes Wayne Mardle should never have been chosen for this year's Premier League.

Mardle was handed a wildcard entry into the 2009 tournament alongside Jelle Klaasen, but struggled to find his form and won only one match in the first nine weeks of the Premier League.

A difficult competition for the world number nine then came to an abrupt end when he was diagnosed with mumps and forced to withdraw.

Former world champion Priestley, who appeared in a Sheffield challenge match in Mardle's absence last week, feels 'Hawaii 501' should have been given some time away from the spotlight to deal with his "demons". (full article...)

Ian Hastie: A winner for New Zealand and Scotland

He was better known as a champion darts player in New Zealand in the 1970s, but across the other side of the world Ian Hastie was a Scotland rugby international whose greatest sporting moment was scoring the winning try at Murrayfield in 1958 to beat France 11-8.

Ian Robert Hastie died at Hutt Hospital on 7 April aged 79. He had been a resident of the Hutt Valley since 1968.

...

While he had played darts with some success in his native Scotland, winning the Scottish British Legion singles and pairs in Aberdeen in 1965, it was in New Zealand that Ian Hastie's second major sports career blossomed.

In his very first year in New Zealand he had won the Southland singles in 1967 and went on to take the Hutt Valley singles in 1970, the first of several other Hutt Valley titles. He first played for his adopted country in 1973 and the following year won the New Zealand mixed pairs, then the national pairs titles in 1976 and 1979. (full article...)
