TWO of the biggest names in darts, Phil Taylor and Wayne Mardle, placed Anastasia Dobromyslova’s chances somewhere between slim and non-existent when asked how she will get on in next week’s World Championship.
But there was little doubt the queue of men eager to back up that conviction and line up alongside the 24-year-old Russian in the draw for the first round proper would barely stretch to the length of the oche at the Alexandra Palace venue. If she can find a way past fellow qualifier Remco van Eijden, from Holland, she will take her place in the main draw alongside 63 men next week.
And while 13-time world champion Taylor suggested, with a lack of chivalry, she would be “bashed up” and Mardle predicted she will “leave without winning a game”, Dobromyslova herself was happy to be a cat amongst pigeons and wait and see. “Bring it on,” she said in an accent still noticeably Russian but polished in Ellesmere Port where she lives with husband and fellow professional Tony Martin.
