Lapierre's dart exploits go largely unnoticed

Bonnie Lapierre's darts resume is long, and it's also widely ignored by the masses.

The Regina thrower would be a household name if she played other sports -- she's won 13 provincial titles in 14 years, and captured the national 2005 and 2006 women's championships.

The Daily Record - RAISE YOUR DART RATE

Oche pressure same as for footballers
By Paula Murray

THE heart rate of darts players in major events can match other top sportsmen, a study has revealed.

Medical tests show that despite its pints and pot-bellied image, the game of darts can more than double the average heart rate during a tense match at the oche.

Phil "The Power" Taylor and other players were wired up at a recent tournament to discover the effects of tension and playing in smoky venues where conditions regularly top 100F and 90 per cent humidity.

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute teen Danny Lauby might throw his way to college and become known worldwide for doing it, thanks to his professional dart-throwing dad.

Danny strolled calmly to the toe line in front of a dartboard, paused to focus on his target, raised his left arm and gracefully threw his steel-tipped dart into the black center of the bull’s-eye, known as the double bull.

REMINISCING ABOUT THE REEBOK - Sid Waddell - uniBlog

Phew!!! I am sitting in my Pudsey garden in 78 degrees of balmy heat just shaking my head in wonder at the great darts fest we had at Bolton.

Keeping tabs on 170 plus darters was difficult and doing 26 hours of live telly was invigorating but it was hour by hour a pure gas.

Looking through my tatty water-spotted notes, here’s what jumps out off the pages…

FUN AND FLAIR AT BOLTON Sid Waddell uniBlog

I’ll start with a joke…

Have you heard the one about the undertaker, the karaoke DJ and the bloke who packs David Beckham’s toiletries?

Punch line: They all reckon they can beat Barney, Taylor, Lloyd, Mason and Wade and Co and win the UK Open at Bolton. They are Nigel Heydon, alias Deadly of Leamington Spa, Disco Ian Walters of Manchester and Fragrant Dave Ladley of Scunthorpe. And therein lies the appeal of this weekend’s Open – the FA Cup of darts, where the minnows meet the sharks.

Since its inception in 2003 the Open has produced some remarkable darts. Phil Taylor did a nine-darter in 2004 and 2005. Adrian Lewis and Chris Mason, both currently in cracking form, had a belter of a match a couple of year’s back in which 19 180s were thrown. Last year bullet-headed Barrie Bates of Wales crushed his way to the final against Barney.

Targeting the dart community

GREEN A month after Empire Darts opened its doors, a thief nearly shut them permanently.

Jim and Bobbi Licitri kind of fell into the darts business. They ran a shop in Norton for two years that sold billiards, poker and other gaming supplies. When a customer asked about dart supplies, the Licitris got some in for her and for stock.

The woman told her friends, and soon more darts enthusiasts were coming into the store.

Unicorn - News: Phil Taylor has rewritten the darting history books yet again

Phil Taylor has rewritten the darting history books yet again – clinching a third consecutive Premier League crown in style at the Brighton Centre…..and with it a winners cheque for £75,000.

It all started in his hometown of Stoke back in February 2005 and now 44 unbeaten matches later, Taylor completed his Premier League hat-trick beating Terry Jenkins in the final.

The predicted Taylor/Barney showdown failed to materialize, as the Dutchman failed in the semi-finals yet again and Barneveld left the arena before the final – a hugely disappointed man.

Avery different board game tries to target Indian players - livemint

The game of darts has its next bull’s eye set on India.
The exacting pastime, often associated with western pub culture and smoke-filled bars, has been gaining momentum in the country, thanks to the efforts by the national governing body, All India Darts Association (AIDA), to widen its appeal, and existing Indian enthusiasts who are spreading the word.
Later this year, India plans to play host to the first-ever India Open, featuring about 60 of the world’s top amateur players—both men and women—throwing for a total prize money of Rs10 lakh.

BULLSEYE, double top, treble 20 - they are all terms now very familiar to dozens of young Andover people thanks to a pioneering scheme set up in the town a year ago.

The Andover Invitation Darts Unicorn Academy, which runs from a room at The Entertainer pub in King Arthur's Way, is the first of its kind in the UK - and has attracted interest from all over the world.

The academy's chairman Glen Dawkins says: "The old image of darts is of beer, smoky pubs and roly-poly men - that's changing as players coming through are now fitter, can count like a computer and have great concentration and co-ordination.

Broward-Palm Beach - News - Thunk! You Lose - browardpalmbeach.com

From time to time I wonder why the sport of darts has such a bad image problem, but then I stumble across an article like this that makes it clear to me...

On a recent Tuesday at Turn 3, a West Boca Raton dive bar that hosts dart league play, a representative from the Florida Dart Association is trying to persuade New Times to omit the best part of this story.

"Please don't print that," begs Ivan Hulan, a short, spiky-haired man with the shifty-eyed look of William H. Macy playing a salesman.

Sorry, man. That's our job.

Hulan takes a step back, arms akimbo, and bows his head. Hulan believes in darts with all his heart. Darts are moving up. People are excited about darts. It's got the Everyman appeal, the gritty bar setting, the possibility of big, corporate-sponsored tournaments. And now, it's as if this newspaper is going to publish the first-ever negative story about a darts league. (All right, there was that 6,000-word story in Sports Illustrated in 2001, showing how the game, even at the highest level of play, is inseparable from beer. This infuriated dart enthusiasts everywhere, including those I'm now interviewing, who are pretty much breathing Amberboch.)

This could be bad for darts.
Broward-Palm Beach - News - Thunk! You Lose - browardpalmbeach.com

If we ever want to bring the sport of darts into the main stream we will have to combat situations like the one in the article. We will have to try very hard to highlight the good that we do in our sport, show off the charitable work that we do and promote the outstanding class individuals that help build the sport.

....

There are now letters to the editor about the article....

I have teams with doctors, engineering managers, airport controllers, corporate executives, etc., and they don't act "stoopid" and throw darts at each other (although I think they'd want to sometimes when they meet the crazies).
Full content of the letters at:

Maybe darts could learn a thing or two from billiards:

Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co., largest U.S. manufacturers of billiard and bowling equipment. Brunswick, which has done a lot to make bowling respectable, is now out to do as much for pool. Brunswick is well aware that many of the nation's 32,000 pool halls are only fronts; they are often gambling and bookie joints, or at best, no place for a lady. B-B-C employees are fined $1 every time they say "pool"; they must say "pocket billiards."

In trying to get out from behind the eight-ball,* B-B-C has made a big decision : to give up on the present generation of pool players.
....

B-B-C is concentrating its crusading efforts on 300,000 Boys' Club members and sending experts like Mosconi, Crane and trick-shot specialist Charlie Peterson to college campuses to demonstrate and stir up interest. There are now some 130 college billiard teams (including Cornell, Princeton, Ohio State). The current champion: University of Minnesota. This summer B-B-C will open its first model billiard room in the Midwest. It will have air conditioning, indirect lighting and a swanky soda bar. Stroy Link...

Once upon a time darts was played in a corner of a pub with a top whack audience of two dozen and the chuckers sometimes had to ask if the missile was in the right bed. Spectator sport? Don’t make me smile. The dart rose slightly during its brief seven foot, nine and one-quarter inch flight, then lost altitude slightly. Mathematically, Roland Scholten could still catch Priestley but he would have to win his final two matches 8-0 or 8-1 and hope Priestley loses his last two games by the same score…..realistically, that isn’t going to happen.

Fun is the point of church darts league - Times Union - Albany NY

NASSAU -- In basements and community rooms of churches around the Capital Region, generations of men gather to play in the Interchurch Dart League just as they did more than 70 years ago when the league was created as a cheap form of entertainment during the Great Depression.

Unicorn: NOSTALGIA TIME AT CARDIFF Sid Waddell uniBlog

The Premier League swept into Cardiff last week and I was swept through with great memories.

I recalled, happily, for several Welsh newspapers the great days of Alan Evans and Leighton Rees, the two men who really put darts on the map in the late 1970s and early 80s. Their flamboyance, character and skill at the Indoor League and on other telly darts grabbed the public imagination. So I was delighted to get a warm letter from Alan’s daughter Claire and her husband Mark thanking me for keeping his name alive. Take it from me, if there had been a Premier League in 1980 Evans and Rees would have been in it – along with Brissy and Lobo. Who do you reckon would have been the other four?

Well what does this have to do with darts? This is the largest sporting event for everyday people in the county, and it features the largest darts event in the county. Granted that many of the participants in the darts event are first time players, but there are always many strong players in the event. Last year a couple of our league's players took top honors in the strongest division.

As a league we provide scorekeepers for the event, and this year we are providing coaching and clinics to help teams prepare for the darts event.
