Desert Classic Monday Qualifier - 30 Jun 2009
FORMER champion Peter Manley was amongst the final six qualifiers for the PartyPoker.net Las Vegas Desert Classic on Monday.
Manley, the 2003 winner, had to enter the qualifiers at the Mandalay Bay Resort after dropping outside the world's top 16 recently.
However, he bounced back from the disappointment of a defeat to Shane O'Connor on Sunday by winning through 24 hours later.
His victories on Monday included a revenge win over O'Connor, at the semi-final stage, before he whitewashed Holland's Bryan de Hoog to win his place in the first round draw.
Wes Newton, twice a Desert Classic semi-finalist, booked his spot in this year's event with a 5-1 defeat of Roland Scholten in his deciding game.
Newton also saw off Graham Warburton, Mark Carter and Paul Lim on the day, with the latter pushing the Fleetwood ace all the way to a deciding leg.
Scotland's Gary Anderson secured a Desert Classic debut, overcoming Sam Rooney 5-1 in the final and also knocking out number four seed Mark Dudbridge.
Colin Monk bounced back from a second round exit on Sunday to win his first Desert Classic appearance with a 5-3 defeat of Canadian Ken MacNeil.
He also defeated John Murray, Kevin Dowling and Denis Ovens to earn his place in the main event, just weeks after hitting a nine-darter in a Players Championship in Barnsley.
New Zealander Phillip Hazel will make his first-ever televised appearance after condemning Barrie Bates to defeat in the final game for a second successive day.
Bates lost to Australian Simon Whitlock on Sunday and went down 5-2 to Hazel a day later, as the 53-year-old joiner from Napier progressed to the big stage.
Another player to ensure a first full appearance in front of the Sky Sports cameras is Chorley's Louis Blundell, whose only other televised event was the UK Open in Bolton last month.
Blundell was a 5-3 winner against Mark Lawrence in his deciding game to secure a spot in the Desert Classic.

from Carolyn Camp, the ADO Youth Manager...
Hello Everyone,
For the first time ADO will send a youth team to the 2009 World Cup which will be held in Charlotte, NC! The youth team consists of a girl and a boy so at the Youth Nationals this year the boys and girls will play separately. The winning boy and the winning girl will make up our youth team. Hopefully if we get the word out more girls will play in the Qualifiers for Nationals. If possible please try to separate the boys and girls in your Qualifiers and send the winner of each group. This is a very exciting time for youth darts!
Good luck,
Carolyn

York’s world darts bid falters
YORK’S four-strong challenge in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship stalled at the qualifying stages at the Telford International Centre.
Chris Thompson, John Quantock, Martyn Turner and Paul Cooper contested the PDPA Qualifiers looking to book one of eight places in the main draw.
Quantock and Cooper clashed in the preliminary round, with Quantock progressing 5-3.
In round one, Quantock exited after a 5-2 defeat by Stuart Dutton.
Turner was unfortunate to draw top seed Mick McGowan and suffered a 5-1 defeat.
That left Thompson to fly the flag for York and he ousted Mark Frost 5-2 in his first round match.
In round two, the Acomb player edged out Sam Rooney, who appeared in this year’s UK Open and Las Vegas Desert Classic, 5-4.
However, Thompson’s run ended in the third round when he went down 5-2 to Isen Veljic.
The Clifton Hotel player’s only consolation was a prize money cheque for £500. (full story...)

Viper may face Dobromyslova
Female darts sensation Anastasia Dobromyslova will face a first-round match-up against Tony Eccles should she win her World Championship qualifying encounter.
The draw, made exclusively on Sky Sports News, pits the 24-year-old Russian up against world number 30 Eccles, however Dobromyslova must first negotiate a tough qualifying match against Remco van Eijden.
After the first round draw, which includes an appetising encounter between Colin Lloyd and Jelle Klaasen, was made, Dobromyslova insists she is taking the tournament a game at a time.
