"DARTS ROUND-UP

11:50 - 01 August 2006
Only pride was at stake in the final week of the Monday Premier League as the top three positions were decided weeks ago.

This was evident in the fact that champions Brookside still went out and took all 13 points at St Levan Inn's expense.

Tug Wilson finished a 36-darter with an out shot of 118 and Jim Pitkin top scored with 10 throws of a ton or more."

paul williams: Forums - Is Ladies Darts Dying

We have often wanted to increase the number of women playing in our league, but so far progress is slow. I found this post on one of my favorie forums. What do you think?

paul williams - Is Ladies Darts Dying: "When i started playing inour local ladies league 12 years ago there was 3 divisions of 11 teams....33 teams in one league...it was great!

Now 12 years on we have 1 division with 8 teams!

I think it's because the young girls are not interested in playing darts anymore....too many other things to do!

I'm the youngest person in our league...at the tender age of 28

Maybe if we make it to the olympics it might help improve things...make people realise it's not a pub game with fags and drink!

McCauley to juggle table tennis, football... "Or maybe I'll pick up darts..."

McCauley to juggle table tennis, football... "Or maybe I'll pick up darts...": "By BRYANT JON-ANTEOLA
Fresno State cornerback Marcus McCauley has figured out how to get on ESPN.

He'll even take a class this semester to help him reach television stardom.

'I've seen a lot of people playing table tennis on ESPN,' McCauley said. 'So I decided to take table tennis for one of my classes this semester. Or maybe I'll pick up darts and compete in the World Series of Darts.'"

I believe that he's joking here, but the discipline and focus required in darts could only help top flight athletes...... Maybe someone from the local league could invite him to play.....

Internet Movie Database- Biography for Phil Taylor (III)

You never know who you are going to find when you least expect it! It's not often that I look for dart players on movie sites:

Internet Movie Database: Biography for Phil Taylor (III): "Biography for
Phil Taylor (III)

Trivia

Married to Yvonne with 4 children and 1 grandchild.

Is now a regular contributor to the pages of 'Darts World' magazine.

By 2002, he had won the world professional darts crown on 10 occasions, making him the game's all-time greatest exponent. His other notable achievements include 5 World Matchplay titles, 1997 News of the World champion, and winner of the inaugural Las Vegas Desert Classic (2002) - the first major televised tournament to be staged outside the UK.

Nicknamed 'The Power' for his phenomenal scoring accuracy and ability to hit high checkouts, he remains the only player who consistently achieves a mean three-dart average in excess of 100 during televised tournament play. Link to his filmography ....

The bio is a bit out of date, but there it is....

SEWA-darts.com & Dartplayer.net: Where did you start?

So have you ever felt the need to tell your own story of how you got started in darts? If so here's your chance at SEWA-darts forum:

SEWA-darts.com & Dartplayer.net Where did you start?: "Reading through the forum (so much good info here!) I've noticed that quite a few of you have played for a loooonnnnnngggggg time, some since childhood. Being totally new to the game in my mid-thirties, I'm having to start from the beginning; I can't even consistently hit fat singles yet. For those of you who started in your teens or in adulthood, how well did you play when you first started? Did you find singles easy, or were you all over the board, like me?

Just curious."

A Hack Job: Me Versus The Philly Dart Collective | EndScore: "In the end, what I’m saying is that we can agree to disagree. The Philly Dart Collective (and other dart lovers) thinks TWSOD is great and I just don’t see it quite the same way. But, you know what? Our differences is what makes life interesting. If we all thought the same way, we’d be as lively and animated as Stepford Wives, femmebots, or Ben Stein. And that could get boring real fast.

So, to all the lovers of darts, I commend and respect your passion for the sport, and for your sakes I hope ESPN continues to show and highlight your sport on their various channels.

I just won’t be tuning in."

Advocate - Growing number of Guyanese play, enjoy darts

Advocate: "Growing number of Guyanese play, enjoy darts
Web Posted - Tue Aug 01 2006
By Norman Faria

For many years, most Guyanese associate the game of darts with pubs in England. We remember scenes from TV shows or movies showing the fellows in tweed suits and caps throwing their darts at the circular dartboard, while their pint of ale or Guinness sits on the bar, waiting for them.

But its widely played in clubs all over the US and Canada, and the Scandinavian countries for example. There are national competitions and even a World Darts Federation."

End Score Interview: George Silberzahn | EndScore - darts on TV: "In last week’s A Hack Job column (this week’s is coming on Thursday… and, yes, part of it is about darts), I questioned the validity of showing darts on television and made the base comment of it being something played in a bar. Well, needless to say, I got slammed by a lot of dart players. Fine. I can take that, but I think there was some misunderstanding from both parties. So, what would any responsible writer do? "

Darts - Dearne Today: DARTS ace Dennis Priestley's dreams...

Sport - Dearne Today: "DREAMS DASHED
DARTS ace Dennis Priestley's dreams of taking the World Matchplay title in Blackpool were dashed when he narrowly lost out 16-13 to eventual tournament winner and arch rival Phil Taylor in the quarter finals.
Priestley, the former world number one, looked to be back to his sparkling best and gave Taylor a rough ride, but the man from Stoke-on-Trent fought back from behind three times to go forward to the semi-finals.
The match against Mexborough-based Priestley proved to be his toughest of the tournament, with Taylor going on to beat Andy Hamilton 17-11 in the semi-finals and overcoming James Wade 18-11 in the final.
Priestley showed true fighting spirit, and battled back from 8-6 down to lead 10-8 with four consecutive legs. But his rival kept his nerve and went on to win."

TorontoSun.com - Bill Lankhof - The Last Word... WSoD

TorontoSun.com - Bill Lankhof - The Last Word... WSoD: "But the World Series of Darts? What’s next ESPN? The all-America marble shootout? Sports TV is so desperate for programming that if it sweats, it’s a sport. But it’s getting goofy when the head of the Olympic movement thinks ballroom dancing is a sport. Lets see: Breathing hard + seductive movements = a sport. Paris Hilton and Desperate Housewives just became co-favourites to win SI’s athlete of the year."

Dear Mr. Lankhof,

First off let me say thanks for even mentioning the sport of darts in your article! However in regards to your quote you have hit the definition dead on:
"But the World Series of Darts? What’s next ESPN? ... Sports TV is so desperate for programming that if it sweats, it’s a sport."

sport n. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sport

1.
1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.

Well to explain it a bit more I will say that most people see darts as a game in which you get together with a few friends, have some beers and throw pointy objects at a round board. I say that's all well and good, but when you look at the sport of darts as it is played at it's top international levels you will find that the level of skill and exertion required is considerable and very difficult to attain. If performances demonstrated by the top starts of darts were just luck or something that 99% of the people of the world could do with little effort then I would agree that darts is a sport not worth being on TV. A better explanation of "Why Televise Darts?" can be found on the website of Dave Depriest "World Series of Darts" qualifier on his website at: http://www.davedepriest.com/world_series_of_darts.htm

Please take some time and try your hand at this sport with folks that are really good at it and you will see the skill and passion that transfers well to TV. Consider contacting:Queen Street Dart League at http://www.qsdl.net/ or The Metro Toronto Area Dart League at : http://www.mtadl.com/

A benefit will be held this Saturday at the Monmouth Eagles Club for Gary Johnson, a certified nurse's assistant at Monmouth Nursing Home.

Sign-up for a darts tournament begins at 1 p.m. and starts at 2 p.m. Following the dart tournament, a pool tournament will occur. There is an entry fee for both of these tournaments. Prizes will be awarded for first and second places.

An auction will begin at 4 p.m. and karaoke by Teel Brothers will also begin at 4 p.m. and run until 9 p.m. There will be 50/50 drawings throughout the evening and prizes will be raffled off.
