Don't write me off, says darts ace Peter Manley

Manley has been boosted by a sponsorship deal from pork scratchings firm Mr Porkys – but admits he has made a pig’s ear of the big tournaments with early exits in almost all the major events.

That has seen him slump to No16 in the world – his lowest ranking since the PDC was formed.

But the 46-year-old former world No1, famed for his feud with Phil Taylor, insists he’s not finished.

He said: “I’ve no doubt that people are writing me off and there’s probably a lot of my rivals who would love to see the back of me – I’m far from finished though.

“I’ve a great sponsor in Mr Porkys and I don’t want to let them down.

“You could say I’ve made a pig’s ear of the major events so far but I’ll be back.

“The birth oft he premier League has given me post-natal depression.

“We’ve got so used to playing in front of huge crowds that anything else is a let-down. It’s also tiring with all the travelling.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted that darts is booming but we have all had to adjust our game and stamina top cope with the demand.

“I also do a lot of exhibitions but I guess that’s had an effect on me too. I’ve been really busy.

“It’s disappointing to have slipped down the rankings but there’s a lot more darts to play yet this year and I’ve got time to redeem myself.”

Despite being ranked No1 in the PDC world rankings for over a year, Manley has managed to win only one major tournament with the PDC, the 2003 Las Vegas Desert Classic.

He has reached the World Championship final three times, but lost them all to his nemesis Taylor and two of those defeats were heavy 7-0 reversals. (story source...)

North End win Royale tourney

Lilongwe and Districts Darts League (LDDL) champions North End Motors are this year’s Royale Chemicals champions after outclassing other six teams at Mzimba Assembly Hall on Saturday.

North End amassed 16 points to win the championship while Blantyre Sports Club who had 13 points were runners up.

City Building Contractors CCL were third after accumulating ten points from the competition that was played on round robin format.

James Mbando of Mafco was named player of the tournament.

Darts Association of Malawi (Dam) general secretary Charles Katola described the tournament as successful.

“It was quite an exciting tournament with full of surprises and upsets,” Katola said. “North End played very well and they really deserved to win the championship.”

Katola, however, said the game of the tournament was between City Building Contractor CCL and BSC.

“It was a game that changed the course of events as BSC went on to beat CBC CCL 7-5,” he said. “But all in all it was one of those memorable games that we have ever had.”

The championship just clocked 20 years and sponsors and Royale Chemical Enterprises marked the day by increasing the sponsorship from K160,000 to K200,000.

Dam general secretary Charles Katola paid tribute to Royale Chemicals for their continued support for the championship.

“A very special thanks to our sponsor Mr Majid Panjwani who owns Royale Chemicals and also happens to be Dam president,” Katola said.

Mzuzu and Districts Darts League (MDDL) chairman Richard Hara was over the moon with the way the competition was organized considering that it was the first time the championship took place in the Northern Region.

Champions and runners up from each region qualify for the championship while the hosts are given a mandate to bring in third positioned team.

Kaning’ina Arrows, Mzuzu Police and Mzuzu Hotel represented MDDL while Blantyre and District Darts League (BDDL) sent their champions City Building Contractors CCL and runners up Blantyre Sports Club.

Flag careers for LDDL were champions North End Motors and MAFCO.

Regulars raise funds for children's hospital

Regulars at the Bridge Inn in Walton-le-Dale played darts around the clock to raise funds for Pendlebury Children's Hospital.

Players were on the oche for 26-and-a-half hours from Saturday morning in a Million and One Darts Challenge which they hope will raise over £2,000 for the hospital. The match was in memory of the son of one of the regulars who died of a liver condition, who was treated at the hospital .

The Brydens Barbados Darts festival encourages regional players to aim for the stars

NOW in its seventh successful year, The Brydens Barbados Darts Festival has engendered new interest in the sport in the region and has made a major contribution to improving standards of play.

It would have been unimaginable seven years ago to think that a darts player from Barbados could share the same stage as the current world champion and be the object of attention of a global TV audience of millions – and then nearly pull off the biggest darts upset in the history of the sport!

Conceived eight years ago by its Tournament Director Michael Heal, whose company has been involved in organising sporting events for nearly 30 years, and The Barbados Tourism Authority, the event has grown in prominence and prestige each year.

“The BTA saw the potential of this event as attracting important tourism business to Barbados in the low season,” says Heal. “Now we have a well established Festival which attracts darts players from the UK and from all over the Caribbean and South America”.

“It also provides the regional darts players with the opportunity to play against the very best in the world at the PDC Ladbrokes.com World Championships – the most prestigious darts tournament in the world. Is there any other event staged in Barbados which offers this kind of incentive? It is the equivalent of a regional golfer winning a golf tournament in Barbados which earns him the right to tee off with Tiger Woods at The British Open!”

An integral part of the Brydens Barbados Darts Festival has been the presence of a number of world champions and darts legends who have acted as hosts of the Festival and inspired the regional players to greater heights.

They have included both current and former world champions such as John Part, Colin Lloyd, Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Cliff Lazarenko and Deta Hedman.

“All these champions are members of the Professional Darts Corporation, (PDC ) the governing body of the professional game. They were impressed by what they saw in Barbados and backed the request of allotting a place at the World Championships for whoever won the premier event of the Festival. This event is The Carib Beer Caribbean & South American Masters and it is only for those darts players with a Caribbean, Central or South American passport. The winner of the event is a true representative of the region”.

“The smooth staging of the Festival is crucial to maintaining the confidence of the PDC and this element has been the responsibility of the Masters Darts Club and without the leadership and determination of Brian Evelyn and Len Warner this event would never have got off the ground. The event owes a similar debt to sponsors such as the Tourist Development Corporation, Brydens and Cockspur. An event of this stature cannot be staged without a considerable financial contribution from a number of organisations”.

The British contingent, hosted by three times World Champion John Lowe, will give the Bajan darts players some early tournament practice in The Warrens Motors Mens and Ladies Pairs at The Ship Inn on Friday night November 7.

The action moves to Almond Bay on Sunday with a 2 p.m. start for The Cockspur Rum Mens Singles and the Guinness Ladies Singles.
The British threat will be lead by Robert Sime, who reached the singles final last year and the ladies will be hoping that Janice Simpkins and Karen Lowe can rediscover the form they displayed in the doubles.

On Thursday November 13 the Festival welcomes participants from all over the Caribbean and South America and the action takes place at the Brydens Complex on Thursday and Friday nights from 8 p.m.

On Thursday we have the Right Guard Mens Singles and the Oh Henry! Ladies Singles. The Bajans and Brits will face stiff competition from players such as Vivekanand Dyal and Rahaman Hassanali from Trinidad, Norman Madhoo and Sudesh Fitzgerald from Guyana and Hank Ebanks from the Cayman Islands.

In recent years the threat from the visiting ladies has come from Trinidadians Nanette Brookes and Rosemary Duff and they are likely to be as determined as ever to return with the prizes this year.

India - British Club Darts Championship

Last weekend saw a new initiative in India to help the development of darts within the country.

In conjuction with the British Club, the BDCH ( British Deputy High Commision ), and the India Darts Association a four event tournament was organised and this was followed by an exhibition match between Team India and the Bengal State Team.
