Fans' Backing For Eccles

TONY ECCLES has secured a unique sponsorship, which will see him backed by a consortium of fans in 2009.

The Superstars of Darts internet forum saw over 100 members purchase £25 shares in the scheme, before voting on which player would receive almost £4,000 in sponsorship.

Eccles picked up 40 percent of the votes in the third round of voting to win the sponsorship, ahead of Chris Mason, Kirk Shepherd and Remco van Eijden. (full article...)

The Superstars of Darts newsletter - SPECIAL EDITION

****

Welcome to a special edition of the Superstars of Darts newsletter.

As you may or may not know, Superstars of Darts Forum Members have come
up with the idea of sponsoring or part sponsoring a player, probably on
the PDC circuit.

The idea is that collectively and with an individual investment of as
little as £25 per year, the funds raised could contribute towards the
costs of accommodation, entry fees and travel for a player without a
main sponsor.

If you would like to participate in the scheme, please post on the below
thread at Superstars of Darts and also you will find much more
information about this concept and how it will work.

http://www.starsofdarts.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14617

We don't charge a fee for this regular newsletter and also all forum
running costs are covered by sponsors, so if you'd like to use this
programme as a mechanism to indirectly support Superstars of Darts -
while helping a player - please do.

Through the scheme a designated player will wear a patch recognising the
SoD forum sponsorship and funds will be administered by the PDPA, as
confirmed by its Chief Executive Alan Warriner-Little.

The rest of this newsletter is turned over to various players and
individuals who have commented on this scheme and what it could mean.

******

Rising PDC star Jamie "JABBA" Caven says :

"I think the idea to sponsor a player is a great idea, as with the
current financial situation we are in, it sees us struggling to capture
a corporate sponsor or a main sponsor. Many players are struggling to
finance their chosen profession - and I'm no different. I do have a
sponsor (Mr Tax Ltd) but that amount is only a small amount (around
£100-£200) per month - so that covers 1 or 2 entry fees - and it helps
and I'm very greatful for that. The rest is made up of any winnings that
I recieve, so the added chance to obtain an extra hand from the forum is
a massive boost for whoever the chosen one is. I think it would take a
bit of pressure off as the pro tour now is more important due to the
fact that there will be no qualifiers at the beginning of December for
Alexandra Palace."

Tony Eccles "The Viper" adds :

"I think that the idea of the forum members clubbing together and
sponsoring a dart player is a great idea. With the current economical
climate it is extremely difficult to obtain sponsors and so pay the high
costs to keep on the PDC tour. I currently am full time professsional
and without a sponsor I am really struggling. My last event was the
Player Championships and so I have not earned anything for one month
until my next tournament. Exhibitions are hard to come by as well, as
most fans are booking the players who are in the public eye the most. So
the Premier League guys normally clean up as they are on TV every week.
With entry fees going to £100, a few extra pounds would go along way.
The total cost for entries alone this year is £4000 so even covering
half of that would be a massive help to a famliy man like me."

New PDC player and former World Champion Andy Fordham also adds his
support to the campaign :

"This is a terrific idea and I think it will be a massive boost for
players with potential who are not yet in the public eye or those
without a main sponsor. The cost of playing on the Pro Tour is not cheap
and covering some of the expenses in this way will help relieve the
pressure somewhat. It is great that fans of the sport have found a way
they can support Darts and help a struggling player."

PDPA board member, PDC Player and TV commentator Chris "Mace The Ace"
Mason shares his views:

"I think the whole idea is a fantastic one that could get an up and
coming player on the ladder to success. Selection of the events to
invest the 2k in is of utmost importance, I think the player should
compete in the double header weekends, as that gives an almost instant
chance of success via the UK Open. With the current economic situation
securing any kind of financial backing is almost impossible, so the
lucky chosen one will be very fortunate. Let's not forget how Phil
Taylor got his big break - let's hope just 10% of that success is
achieved."

A final word from one of the organisers of this project, PDPA member
Dave Ahmet :

"Dear members,
I would just like to thank all the forum members who have thrown their
weight behind this project. I see it as a very exciting opportunity for
players and fans alike and hope that it will continue to grow over the
coming months and maybe years. The offers of project support have been
quite overwhelming and we have quite a collective expertise at our
disposal, which includes sports journalists, IT, sports promotion,
accountants and solicitors, not to mention starsofdarts.com which has
been our platform for the development of this project.

So far we have 62 members that have pledged their support and I am
expecting this to translate into approximately £2000. We are hoping to
attract some more interest until we have to close this years round in
about a weeks time.

I would then hope that during the following week we will begin to
collect the money with the help of the PDPA, who have also offered
administrative support. Once all cash has been collected, we will begin
the first round of voting for the player we want to support.

Thank you"

Thanks for your interest and full information is on the below linked
thread and don't forget to post saying that you are interested in
supporting this idea!

February Superstars of Darts online newsletter - 2009

Welcome to the February Superstars of Darts online newsletter. The
speculation is finally over. Gary Anderson is a PDC player and so one of
the longest running sagas in darts comes to an end.

Superstars of Darts is delighted to bring you an exclusive interview
with Gary Anderson about the move and his future with the PDC.

*

GARY ANDERSON INTERVIEW

Gary, what has brought about your move to the PDC at this stage in your
career?

GA: I need a fresh challenge in my career at the moment and it's
something I had to do.

In our huge survey of fans, players and anyone interested in darts
shortly before Christmas, you were voted by hundreds as the second most
popular player in the sport, only just behind Phil Taylor. There has
been a growing groundswell of support behind you over the past few years
and presumably it will only get bigger now your profile is raised in the
PDC. What are your thoughts on having this level of popularity and how
you will cope with it over the coming year or so?

GA : I would like to thank all the fans who voted for me and I will be
trying my very best in the coming months. I am definitely a player who
likes being out in the crowd rather than stuck in VIP rooms.

However perhaps now fans will be able to focus on your darts rather then
when you are going to move to the PDC. It must be a relief to finally be
able to put all the will he/ won't he speculation behind you?

GA : I am there now, so hopefully I can kick on, but it may take a few
months to settle in.

Going on the pro tour and playing top level double headers most weekends
is a massive commitment for you. How will you have to adapt to this new
lifestyle and what are your thoughts about taking on the likes of
Taylor, Barneveld and Wade week in, week out?

GA : I am looking forward to playing two events in the one weekend with
my first one being Irvine in Scotland. The exhibition circiut is very
busy at the moment with the MIB team and its something I enjoy very much
as it lets you get out there and meet the fans so I will still be doing
just as many.

I can't wait to take on Phil , Raymond & James. However there are a lot
of other good players in the PDC, not just these three!

How is the feeling now that you have left the BDO, do you wish the
animosity between the PDC and BDO was less? For example your photo was
removed from the BDO website a couple of weeks beforeyour move was even
announced. Have you been wished well by organisers and officials or were
you put under pressure at Lakeside?

GA : There has been no bad feelings in my move to the PDC from anyone at
the BDO. It's like a family there. People like Martin Fitzmaurice,
Robert Holmes, Rab Butler and many more are and always will be friends
and I would like to thank them and the BDO for all there help over the
last 10 years. I will also be still working with my MIB darts partners
Gary Robson & Darryl Fitton along with Davie Hanson.

Will you always look back with disappointment that you were never able
to reach either the World Masters or Lakeside final?

GA : Not really. I am very pleased with all the events I have won
already, and I am going to hopefully add to them in the future

What are your immediate ambitions in the PDC and on the tour. What would
you be satisfied with in a year's time?

GA : My main thing must be to try and qualify for the major events and
hopefully play well.

Finally, I guess there will be a bit of a battle between you and Robert
Thornton to establish who is the PDC Scottish number one player. Will
you have half an eye on that, I am sure the fans will?!

GA : Scotland's number one or World's number one, it does not really
bother me. I just want to try and play to my best darts and see where
that takes me...

*****

WILL THEY, WON'T THEY

So Mark Webster and Gary Anderson have now been confirmed as PDC
players. Are any of the other remaining BDO World Championship
participants likely to follow? The below is my personal opinion only!

Scott Waites - He has been given a Grand Slam of Darts place in lieu of
Martin Adams third (and final) refusal but the current word is he may
stay with the BDO, however the feedback seems to change almost daily!

Simon Whitlock - Yes. Probably around September. Simon has posted on his
website that he will move to the UK later in the year and his wife has
confirmed on Superstars of Darts that they will probably move to the UK
in September and that Simon recognises that future earnings are with the
PDC.

Tony O'Shea and Darryl Fitton - I don't know! Whereas the indicators
were looking positive a few months ago, those close to the players seem
to say nothing will happen now. Both players aren't getting any younger
(no offence, chaps) so if they don't decide to move to the PDC soon,
that respective boat may pass them by. I don't get the feeling anything
is on the cards for the immediate future, but who knows what is around
the corner.

As to anyone else - your guess is as good as mine!

*****

NEWS BITS AND GOSSIP

As stated by Barry Hearn in recent Superstars of Darts interviews, 2009
is a consolidation year for the PDC, given the current global financial
climate. However there are tentative whispers of a new Pro Tour event
being considered in the Meditteranean for the second half of the year.

It is still looking unlikely that there will be any TV coverage for the
US Open this year. The event should still go ahead, probably in Atlanta.
However, rumours also abound that the European Championship could also
be moved to this timeslot (May). It's all down to TV coverage and
sponsorship.

As for the North American Darts Championships, again this should still
go ahead in Boston, but entry will be restricted to Americans and
Canadians only.

Qualification for this year's Zuiderduin Masters (one of the biggest
events on the BDO/WDF calendar) is being revised and it will level out
the playing field as far as qualification from European and UK based
tournaments is concerned. So whereas last year's tournament had a line
up very similar to Lakeside, expect some new names in the mix from
Belgium, Holland and possibly Germany for this year's tournament

The German Open this year will be the first to control alcohol use and
abuse by the juniors. As the rules for drinking vary from country to
country the German organisation are having a zero tolerance approach for
under 18s. A good move perhaps as it can lead to less players being so
reliable on drinking alcohol in order to perfom to their best and it can
only be good for the image of the sport.

And as a final teaser, the BBC have been talking to the PDC about their
future output in Darts....

Finally, if you haven't already seen them - don't forget to check out
our exclusive interview with Mark Webster conducted immediately after
his move to the PDC and our brand new forum member's interview with PDC
Chairman, Barry Hearn.

Both are in the "Articles & Interviews" section of the forum.

January Superstars of Darts online newsletter

You will have to subscribe to get this newsletter...

Welcome to the January Superstars of Darts online newsletter. Two
successful World Championships have now been completed with massive
numbers of television viewers recorded as well as record breaking
numbers on the Superstars forum.

An average of 3 million viewers watched the BDO World Championship final
between Ted Hankey and Tony O'Shea, roughly the same figure as last year
with half a million or so also tuning in from Holland.

As for the PDC World Championhip over 800,000 watched the Taylor /
Barneveld clash on Sky Sports, the third highest number in the
tournament's history and over a million viewers from Holland watched a
live broadcast.

The Superstars of Darts forum saw its record number of users online at
any particular moment broken shortly after the Taylor / Barneveld clash,
only for the record to be smashed again shortly after the Lakeside final
(495 users online at once!).

*

Rumours abound regarding potential movers to the PDC. Andy Fordham the
former BDO World Champion has joined the PDC and will take part on the
Pro Tour from the end of February. I am sure well wishes go out to Andy
who has had to overcome some severe health issues in recent years and we
all hope he enjoys the new challenge of playing on the PDC Pro Tour.

Three further movers are expected to sign up in January, watch the forum
for details!

*

Could there be Darts on the way to Channel 5?

Robert Charles, Channel 5's Head of Sport was spotted at the Alexandra
Palace, so again keep your eyes peeled for any developments on this
front and remember, you heard it here first!

*

Maybe not all good news on the televised Darts front. While it seems
sure that Setanta will be broadcasting a second series of The League of
Legends this summer, this appears to be the only darts they will show
this year.

At this moment in time no new home for the BDO tournaments covered last
year has been announced.

*

We didn't see much of top American player Ray Carver last year. The
reason being that he was spending time with his new baby daughter.

Ray is now keen to get back on the circuit and resume his travels to the
UK and is on the hunt for additional sponsorship to enable him to do
this.

Let's hope it all pans out well for "Razor". He is possibly the best
American player on his day and it would be great to see him back on the
pro circuit.

*

Maybe there was a slight exaggeration as to how cold the Doncaster venue
was on the first day of the PDC pro tour for 2009. In any case there was
Ice Skating on offer for those who wanted to warm up with some brisk
exercise.

The cold certainly didn't stop Adrian Lewis either, who reportedly hit 8
x 180s in 7 legs in the early stages. Perhaps he should be the successor
to the 'Ice Man' nickname?!

Sky Sports News were at the event and Wayne Mardle, Anastasia
Dobromyslova and Jelle Klaasen had interviews shown on television. The
day's results also made the Sky Sports on screen news ticker - possibly
a first for the pro tour and proof that Darts appeal is just getting
bigger and bigger.

*

Don't forget that you have a chance to put a question to PDC Chairman
Barry Hearn as part of an interview that Barry has agreed to give our
forum members.

http://www.starsofdarts.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14026

*

Finally we will be launching our Unicorn sponsored Premier League Darts
prediction competition in a couple of weeks, so keep your eyes on the
forum.

Essentially you have to enter your predictions every week and the
ultimate winner will be able to select a heap of prizes from the Unicorn
product range.
