For England and Bobby George - how Lakeside would thrill to anthem remix

They could use that DJ at the Lakeside BDO World Championship, where the party is fast going flat and everyone is heading quickly for the kitchen. A chill set in when Jelle Klaasen, the holder, went all wobbly and was dumped out in the first round. It grew still colder when Michael van Gerwen, the tournament’s much-touted 17-year-old “darting prodigy”, followed him to the taxi rank minutes later.

World Darts: Just no Klas

World champion Jelle Klaasen crashed out of the tournament at the first hurdle, losing 3-0 to Dutch compatriot Co Stompe in Frimley Green last night

Klaasen stunned the darts world last year when, as an unknown, he beat subsequent PDC champion Raymond van Barneveld in the final. But he has failed to build on that success and consequently did not even secure one of the 16 seedings for this tournament, leaving him vulnerable to an in-form player in the opening round.

In sport, as in comedy, timing is everything. So the BDO's top darters have it all to do if their World Championship is to generate a feeling of it being anything other than 'after the Lord Mayor's show'.

O’Shea has admitted that he didn’t have the best of years in 2006, but it sounds like he knows what to put that down to.

"I have to admit that I haven’t really played as many ranking tournaments as I should have in 2006," said O’Shea.

"I’ve been too busy doing exhibition shows.
