Dartoid's World - 2-17-09

Greetings!

To some, the eighty-four mile, hour or so long stretch along old US Highway 54 from El Paso, Texas to Alamogordo, New Mexico might seem desolate, but it's not. At least it wasn't for me. Travelers will typically encounter military personnel along this lonely connector strip between Fort Bliss and Holloman Air Force Base, but not me. I managed instead to meet four Border Patrol officers and several dozen RABBITS!

In between, at the First Annual White Sands Missile Launch darts tournament in Alamogordo I had a regular old time, albeit just not quite as exciting an experience as I did coming and going --

Elle hits bullseye with her selection

Elle Ward made an impressive darts debut for Queensland a couple of months ago.

Now she's aiming to impress on her Australian debut.

The 16-year-old Maryborough resident will represent Australia during the Arafura Games in Darwin in May.

The Games are held every two years in Darwin and more than 3000 athletes representing 32 nations contested the 2007 event.

This year competitors will give it their all in 27 different sporting disciplines. Darts is making its debut this year.

Ward got her chance to take on the world after impressing national selectors while turning on the style for Queensland during the Australian Junior Championships in Canberra late last year. (full artilce...)

Who knew dart throwing could be profitable...

From the Me and My Boys! - Blog
...playing darts consists of standing around a bar, drinking beer and throwing sharp object. Anyway, he is actually pretty good at this little hobby. He has been playing in a dart league...

I am also hoping his good playing continues this weekend because he is playing in the state dart tournament and it could be profitable if he wins! (post link...)

Tanzania: Empire Defends Darts Title This Weekend

Elisha Mayallah
Arusha — The darts tournament pitting Empire Darts Club of Arusha, and over 10 other darts clubs drawn from Kenya and Tanzania, kicks-off next Saturday, February 14, at the Magereza Club venue in Moshi.

The competition held on rotational basis among Arusha, Moshi, Taveta, and Voi venues, is being hosted by Taita Taveta Darts Association, a branch of Kenya Darts Association.

Empire Darts Club, the trophy holders, have in the last two weeks been busy featuring in several build-up matches to gauge their readiness ahead of the tournament.

They will be playing against various teams drawn from Voi, Taveta, Holili border and Uyudai. Moshi, Mto-wa-mbu and Karatu will be represented by their own teams while Arusha (besides the Empire Darts Club) will field Family Club, Magereza, AICC, Breweries, Sunrise and Usa River teams in the tournament.

Empire Darts Club after successful victories in the recent past boasts of holding various trophies, including Arusha Region Amateur Darts Association [ARADA] 2nd place last year, IDK trophy in Taveta, Kenya and Chala Cup - 1st winner, Jirani Mwema Trophy and Tanzanite Trophy second runners-up.

Zoeb Kaley, the team captain of the Empire Darts Club, is optimistic that his team is ready to start on a winning note.

"We are physically and mentally prepared for the tournament. We know there will be a lot of expectations from the teams and fans. We will try to stick to a winning psychology," he said.

Zoeb's team's recent performance stems out from a committed team comprising 14 players who have stayed together in the past five years. His team is self-sponsored, but corporate business firms like Bulk Distributors and International Dairy Products of Arusha had on various occasions sponsored the team.

Zoeb also had a word of thanks to the sponsors for their continued support.

Empire Darts Club, established in the early 2000 at the Tanzania Farmers Association [TFA] complex in Arusha, has participated in various East African tournaments since, and hosted one in 2006. (full article...)

The Count rises again

Ted Hankey had to go through a lot in order to become the BDO World Champion for a second time.

For many, Hankey is what the game of professional darts is all about because he is someone that unloads an array of emotions and fully exploits his on-stage persona to keep the crowd entertained.

It shouldn't be forgotten though that he is also an excellent player. When he is on form, he is one of the best to watch. (full article...)

Dartboard setup tip....

Tired of having to use those wooden wedges to keep your dartboard from getting the wobblies?
A razor knife, and a scrap of carpet should do the trick!
I just traced around the board to get the size right.
Don't forget to cutout a hole in the center....
Once you have cut out the carpet you can adjust the screw on the back of the board to get the fit tight against the carpet scrap, and backboard! Use one at home, or at your local dart venue. We used them at the Gold Coast Shoot #1 http://vcda.org/images/album/SeasideGames/index.html

At least it's good for a laugh.... too bad it's not true...

Darts could star in 2012 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee sits today to discuss the possible inclusion of new sports for the 2012 Olympics. Senior officials from the governing bodies of various sports will make a case for their applications to be included. A vote will determine which sport goes through.

This time round, the Committee will hear applications from Street Hockey, Real Tennis, Synchronised Mime, Yodelling, Cross Country Stilt Walking and, amazingly, Darts.

Trevor 'Oche' Coaky, the head of the World Darts Federation explained. "Now that Bullseye is only shown on satellite, there is concern that the public has lost some of its enthusiasm. However, at the grass-roots level; in pubs, clubs, bedrooms and garages across the world, Darts is played by huge numbers of people. We believe Darts, in the form of the internationally accepted 501 game, would be a big crowd draw as part of the 2012 experience."

Trevor will not get an easy ride in the meeting, however, as there is a lot of support for the other sports, particularly Yodelling. In the competitive form, Yodelling consists of a set of increasingly difficult long-distance yodels which are marked by a panel of judges. In March last year, Britain took the World Yodelling Championships by storm after Lottery Fund money had been ploughed into the sport. In fact, it was only Sonia Ululato's sprained larynx in the 3000 metres that prevented Britain from taking a clean sweep of gold medals.

In the past, the Committee has sometimes allowed combination sports, such as the Triathlon into the Games. One possibility is the creation of a Modern Duathlon, starting with a gruelling 26-mile Cross Country Stilt Walk, and finishing with a Darts match or Yodel. Although there is some support for the idea, many traditional Yodellers and Dartists reject it on the grounds that it could make their chosen sport a laughing stock.

However the voting goes today, at least one new sport will be admitted to the Games, replacing the recently discredited Swimming.
