DARTS legend Bobby George believes Dave Chisnall could become the sport’s new superstar – and give Phil Taylor a run for his money.

Chisnall, 29, meets BDO world No.1 Tony O’Shea in the semi-finals of the Lakeside Championships this afternoon after a stunning fightback to knock out defending champion Ted Hankey.


BBC commentator and double world runner-up George tipped ‘Chizzy’ to go all the way before the start of the tournament.


And Chisnall produced some amazing darts to snatch a shock 5-4 win, despite trailing 4-1 against ‘The Count’.


George said: “If he could start a match like he finished against Ted, then no-one can beat him.


“He could even beat Phil Taylor. He has the bottle, he doesn’t care.


“People ask me all the time about Phil Taylor and I say he is a once in a lifetime player, it’s just a shame he came along in my lifetime.


“But Dave could be the second. He was averaging 121 against Ted. That’s 11 and 12-dart finishes in every leg of 501.”


Taylor won the first of his 15 world titles at Lakeside in 1990 as a BDO player, when he was also 29, and he has since gone on to dominate the sport.


The Power is now the dominating force of the PDC show and Chisnall could be one of those to join their ranks in the future.


Chisnall, who is making only his second appearance at the World Championships, won last year’s BDO British Open and George said: “Three weeks ago I said I fancied him as a dark horse.


“People laughed at me when they saw the draw come out but they are not laughing now.”


It has not been a good week for Hankey, though.


Along with losing at Lakeside, he has also been fined £250 by the Darts Regulation Authority for swearing on camera while on stage at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

Darts legend, Bobby George, praises Denbighshire's Mark Webster

A LEGEND of the arrows has nothing but praise for a Vale of Clwyd world champion.
The eyes of the darts world turn to the fabled Lakeside Country Club early next month with the 2009 running of the BDO World Professional Darts Championship.

And two-time world championship runner-up Bobby George has praised Denbigh's defending Lakeside champion Mark Webster.

"He doesn't trap it off. He's very quiet and he doesn't say a lot," said Bobby, who lost in the 1980 and 1994 finals against multiple world champions Eric Bristow and John Part respectively.

DARTS: Mark happy to be a 'man of the people'

WORLD champion Mark Webster will give a helping hand to the North Wales winner of the inaugural People's Darts tournament.
Bobby George was on hand to congratulate the winner, Owen Roberts, 52, from Llanddona, Anglesey, and presented him with a £1,000 cheque for his chosen charity – Macmillan Nurses.

George will now pass Owen on to BDO champion Webster in the weeks leading up to the final at the Lakeside in Surrey.

Denbigh's Webster will visit him at his local pub, Tafarn Y Rhyd, Beaumaris, for a coaching and exhibition night where he will be on hand to offer tips and advice to the North Wales finalist.

Pub players to face darts legends

Eight pub darts players have won the chance to test their skills against the sport's legends.

Five men and three women will line up against former world champions John Lowe and Eric Bristow, as well as Bob Anderson and the flamboyant Bobby George in an evening at Witney's Langdale Hall.

They won their sporting opportunity thanks to local darts fan Colin Smith who is repeating a charity evening which attracted about 200 people last year.

After a tough childhood, helping his imposing dad in the garden, looking after his pigeons, Bobby George left school early barely able to read or write. A life in the building trade – digging the Victoria Line on the London underground and laying concrete and granite floors – or minding Essex pub doors in the post-Krays era seemed to beckon.

That is until, after a day’s fishing off southern Ireland in the summer of 1976, a game of pub darts got off the ground. By the end of the night Bobby had taken on and beaten the whole pub. He was a natural. He has never really looked back: three years later he won the News of the World Championship.
