Double games success for Gladstone

The Gladstone dart player said he grew in confidence throughout the rest of the week.

“First day I was a bit nervous, then I said to myself 'what am I doing, I do this every week it is simple',” he said.

The 2009 Arafura Games have an exciting line up of events across 26 sporting disciplines. For the first time the Games will include the sports of darts and muaythai.

Elle hits bullseye with her selection

Elle Ward made an impressive darts debut for Queensland a couple of months ago.

Now she's aiming to impress on her Australian debut.

The 16-year-old Maryborough resident will represent Australia during the Arafura Games in Darwin in May.

The Games are held every two years in Darwin and more than 3000 athletes representing 32 nations contested the 2007 event.

This year competitors will give it their all in 27 different sporting disciplines. Darts is making its debut this year.

Ward got her chance to take on the world after impressing national selectors while turning on the style for Queensland during the Australian Junior Championships in Canberra late last year. (full artilce...)

The search for volunteers has started

The call is out for people interested in volunteering at next year's Arafura Games.

More than 1100 people are needed to help out at the event, that starts in six months' time in Darwin.

There will be four more sports than the previous games, with the return of volleyball and softball and [b][i]the introduction of darts[/b][/i] and Muaythai.

The NT Minister for Sport, Karl Hampton is encouraging people to sign up as volunteers.

"I just think it's very worthwhile to get out there, it may be long hours, and many various type of duties as a volunteer, you've just got to get in there and get your hands dirty," Mr Hampton said.

"I think they can gain a lot really, particularly from their satisfaction that we'll hopefully run a very successful Arafura Games. It's great for the Darwin and the Northern Territory community.

"It's an important event that we in the Northern Territory Government acknowledge so I think what you get out of it is what you put into it," he said.
