Austin Darts Founder Passed away #darts

From: Elaine Bohls
Date: Fri Dec 30, 2011 9:10 am
Subject: FW: Austin Darts Founder Passed away

It is with the deepest regret that I must send out this e-mail, notifying the dart community of the passing of one of our longest standing members and one of its founding members. Brad Peck passed away, on Monday, 26 December, after battling cancer and cardiac complications. Brad was a wonderful mentor, not only to me but to many others. He taught me a lot about playing darts, when I was first starting, more than 25 years, ago. He had the most wonderful approach to the sport and i will always remember his custom barrels and piano wire points. His quiet way of doing things was a reflection of his gentle-giant personality. He will be greatly missed. His funeral is today, 30 December. There is no obit listing with Weed-Corley, but only the one in the paper.

Death Notice - Austin-American Statesman

PECK, Bradley Walter, 60, construction worker, of Austin died Monday. Survived by wife Peggy. Services 3 p.m. Friday, Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, Congress location.
Published in Austin American-Statesman on December 29, 2011

May peace be with you all.

With deep sadness,
Elaine Bohls

Gary Anderson and world champ Adrian Lewis in a war of words at PDC World Championship #darts

He said: “I don’t think I have ever been to a sudden-death tie-break before, so to all those people who said I don’t have the bottle or the stamina to come back from 2-0 down, stick that in your pipe and smoke it. It doesn’t matter how well you play, you still need luck. The reigning world champion is still in this tournament, and to be honest I don’t think he should be.

FINE POINTS : With Game of #Darts Drawing Participants and Fans, Can Song and Movie Be Far Away? - Los Angeles Times

... an article from the "Golden Age of Darts" in North America:
Let's see . . . there are a couple of country songs about pool. "The Baron," by Johnny Cash, for one.
Surely there must be a tune about one of the more popular and up-and-coming American pastimes.
If not, there will be soon. Blueberry Hill, a prominent recording label, is conducting a national songwriting contest about darts. The idea is to cut a hit record and have it on the jukebox of every dart bar in the country.

John Lowe in the USA Nov./Dec. #darts

RodmanRodman wrote:
Well, Mr. Lowe contacted me this evening and said that the L.A. leg of his tour was fantastic. Congrats guys on showing him and his wife a great time.

Tomorrow, I pick him up at the airport, then Tuesday at 7:00 pm, his Nashville exhibition officially starts. We're very excited. While I don't expect all the hoopla that was served over the weekend, our league will do its best to ensure that Mr. and Mrs. Lowe have a nice time in Music City.

We feel very honored to have Mr. Lowe make one of his four stops in Nashville.

Thanks for posting the compliment. L. David Irete went all out on this one and it was truly a grand event.

John Lowe Local Exhibition, Live TV quality Live Stream! #darts

Joey Burt gets an autograph from John Lowe.
The John Lowe L.A. Exhibition was a great afternoon of fun, Evan Waterman and Bones (John Ronnholm) from Darts Around the World and L. David Irete of Triple Twenty Productions hosted a wonderful event. This event was streamed live over the internet, and had TV quality productions with multiple cameras and camera operators along with Evan and Bones doing live podcast commentary, Irete producing / directing and Adam 'Thorn' Smith posting updates on facebook and dartsunderground.com  The results was a Pro Exhibition the likes of which have never been seen before in the US and maybe Canada! On top of all of that, we had some wins by some of our local players who also threw some impressive darts (VCDA league member Joey Burt and Eric Zarlenga and Jose Belonio of LADA).

The feature match was a best 2 of 3 match with Chris Lim facing John Lowe. John Lowe won the cork, but Chris started with strong scoring and won the leg. John struck back taking the second leg which brought the match to a deciding leg. In this leg John Lowe started strong and was first to the double to take the match. It was a great way to finish a wonderful afternoon of darts! Thanks to John Lowe for treating us all to a wonderful afternoon of darts entertainment! Tomorrow will be the MLD John Lowe open. For anyone interested in keeping track of that MLD event, just look for Thorn's live updates on www.dartsunderground.com during the event.

MARILYN aka “ICE”

“Ice ice baby, too cold, too cold … Ice ice baby” Vanilla Ice

Marilyn Grace Sodoski was born on June 2, 1944 and grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In June of 1965, our Ms. Sodoski met a man named Marshall working in a local bar, and the couple began dating soon thereafter, however, rumor has it, he had an interest in the best friend of Ms. Sodoski, so he ended their relationship for a period of time. Fortunately for the darting community, she forgave him and on May 18th, 1968 she agreed to walk down the isle and become Mrs. Marilyn Popp. In 1969 the couple had their first child Tina, and in 1975 gave birth to their second daughter Karen.

Former World Champion Mark Webster and multiple tournament winner Simon Whitlock have agreed new 4 year sponsorship contracts with the world’s leading darts company Winmau. The agreements will see the hugely successful partnerships continue until 2015.

Mark Webster said "I’ve enjoyed many great years working with Winmau, which has included a World Championship and my best ever world ranking to date. With their passion for the sport and their constant desire to move forward, it’s no surprise why their products are the best in the world today”.

Simon Whitlock added “Winmau have done everything to help me play at my best. I’ve really enjoyed working with them and had a great time developing some new product ideas that are in the market and selling well. Their commitment in darts is second-to-none and they are great people to work with.”

MLD Local: Austin Open, 12 Nov 2011 $2520 #darts #results

Only 7 players played. This was sad because our previous event in Houston had 28 players. Although the field was small, the quality of play was high.

An initial round robin was played where each match was 7 total legs (not best of). Thus, each player played 42 legs (7 legs x 6 players). Everybody enjoyed it very much. 'Total legs won' in the RR stage determined the player seeds for the Main Event knockout bracket.

Got questions about MLD and it's events? Have a look at some of these FAQs from the MLD website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Major League Darts (MLD) is a new pro dart tour across the US and Canada with the goal to "Create the next North American World Darts Champion".
Play the best players in the US and Canada in fewer events each weekend, get more legs in, and earn more money.
No. Major League Darts (MLD) is a separate new organization that is not affiliated with any other organization at this time.
Major League Darts' (MLD) philosophy is to give the darter the most darting value for their dollar. The more legs ones plays for your entry fee the better. There are many darting events one can choose to attend, and at a MLD event, we want everyone to play as many legs as they can.
No one wants to travel to an event and loose in the first round after playing 2 legs of darts. We want people to get a lot of games for their entry fee.
See 'why a round robin' question for most of the answers.
We want people to feel as though they have gotten their dollars amount when they play in a MLD event. Most people know the general pecking order of darters, and sadly most of us fall in the lower section; we want to give those players an opportunity to win a tournament as well.
It really depends on the size of the round robin group you are in.
You will play a minimum of 17-28 legs (depending on group size) if you lose in the first round of the Consolation bracket.
You will play a minimum of 20-31 legs (depending on group size) if you lose in the first round of the Main bracket.
All Major League Darts are Open events. There are no separate events based on gender at this time.
A MLD "local" event may tag itself as a Womens/Ladies Only event, but that would be at the discretion of the local organizer.
If there are sufficient pre-registrations at a particular MLD Tour Stop for Women, then there is the possibility of having a separate Women's event, but the main event will remain an Open event, and a woman may enter either one.
We love that people are asking this question and want to see a Major League Darts (MLD) Tour Stop come to their area. There is a 3 year rollout plan that has been created to allow a balance of events in the various parts of the countries. MLD is designed as a travel tour and people need to come out of their comfort areas to make it work. We're expecting only 30% participation from the local players, the rest would be from around the countries.
If you are interested in trying out the MLD system before a MLD Tour Stop comes to your area, why not host a MLD "Local" event? Anyone can host one, it doesn't have to be a league or organization.
Major League Darts (MLD) is a new organization that encompasses players that play in many different organizations. Choosing one of the existing ranking systems from a single organization would not makes sense.
The Darts Database Rankings (DBB) includes events from ADO, NFDC, BDO, WDF, PDC, MLD, and almost any other tournament on the planet.
If you have placed in a tournament in the past year, you are in the the DBB. If your country is not associated with your name, please send them an email to get that connected.
Chalkers or Scorers or Markers, whichever term you use are assigned in all Major League Darts events.
No one likes to chalk, but everyone like to complain when they don't have a chalker.
The Round Robin phase of events all have a match order and an assigned chalker for each match.
The knockout phase of events will see the loser of the previous match on that board act as the chalker. The first match in the knockout phase will also have a chalker assigned based on the way the bracket is drawn.
  • Chalking is a requirement of all players
  • All players are assigned to chalk multiple matches throughout the tournament
  • An assigned chalker is responsible for providing a substitute chalker if they are unable to chalk a match
  • Failure to chalk a match or failure to provide a substitute chalker may result in forfeiture from the remaining matches and subsequent events for that day with no refund, along with a non-distribution of any prize money earned.
  • Multiple forfeitures for failure to chalk, or failure to provide a substitute chalker, may result in a ban from future MLD events for a period of 1 year from the date of the last forfeiture
There are no cricket events at Major League Darts (MLD) Tour Stops or "local" tournaments.
Look at the mission statement of MLD: "To Create the Next North American World Darts Champion". 501 is the international game of darts and playing a lot of legs against better players is the goal of all MLD events.
MLD Local events are limited in field size for 2 reasons:
1. Board limitations of the host venues. Remember, these are not designed to be full blown weekend tournaments, they are designed to be played in existing venues with existing boards in 1 day.
2. The purpose of the MLD Local events is to introduce players to the MLD system/format. We want people to enjoy the events/system and to attend the Tour Stops so this new tour can be a success for everyone in North America.
While some venues can accommodate more players, the goal of the locals is introduce players to the MLD format/system and for the Locals to not take a life unto themselves. If you want to play in a field of 160, participate in a Tour Stop.
We are working on a formal set of rules for Major League Darts and are hoping to announce that shortly. In the meantime, we have a quick rules page setup which should address a lot of the basic questions.
Good question. In a nutshell: things cost money, and people are spending a lot of time organizing and setting things up to host these events.
For Tour Stops, the money goes to cover room/hall rental, portable standard rental, hotel minimums, fliers, trophies, staff payments, paypal/credit card fees, and general promotion. The rooms are not free, and the portables are not free.
For “local” events, half goes to the local tournament organizer/director: posters, their time, and other costs... or how ever they decide to break it down (Shirt for the winner, plaque/Trophies etc) and the other half to MLD: which pays for, use of logo, Tournament Computer Program/Score sheets, paypal fees, website, "staff", etc. (most is eaten by CC/paypal fees)
The payout structure for a MLD "local" event is similar to the MLD Tour Stop payouts except the entry fee is less and the number of players is less.
Everything is percentage based. 90% payout is guaranteed, so it scales with the number of participants.
In a nutshell: Consolation winner gets their entry fee back or last paid spot
So, here is the payouts for a 56 person event.
The total purse would be $2520
Winner: $500
2nd: $300
Semis: $195
Last 8: $130
Last 16: $90
Consolation
winner:
$90
On a side note with 56 players, you will play a minimum of 21 legs of 501, assuming you lose 0-3 in the first round of the consolation bracket.
