News-Sentinel: Dan Brown, age 17, is going to compete in the U.S. Youth National Championship - Steel tips, steely nerves:
"Norwell junior will compete in Youth Nationals this weekend.
By Blake Sebring bsebring@news-sentinel.com
By Demelza Helms of The News-Sentinel
Dan Brown, age 17, is going to compete in the U.S. Youth National Championships in Connecticut. Some nationally-ranked darters say he is the one to beat.

Most teen-agers playing with sharp objects would result in their elders running away or calling for the police. With Dan Brown, they say he might end up being a national champion.

Brown, 17, is competing this weekend at the American Dart Organization’s Youth Nationals in Stamford, Conn. The Norwell high school junior placed seventh in the event last year and third two years ago. Both times he was eliminated by the eventual champion."

Unicorn - uniBlog: post by a darts collector!

This post should be of interest to all those darts and dartboard collectors out there!

Unicorn - uniBlog: post by a darts collector!: "I loved the game right from the start, and wanted to learn about it and the history of the game, as well as the equipment used, and how that equipment developed over time. To that end, I began collecting sets of darts 23 years ago, as well as boards, and books on the game. My darts collection numbers probably 130 sets of darts, well over 40 books on the game, and I have various regional dartboards, such as the Manchester 'Log End', the 'Wide 5's', the 'Narrow 5's', 'Yorkshire Doubles', 'Irish All Black', 'Champion's Choice ', 'Par Darts', 'Quadro', 'M & Y Eric Bristow 'Crafty Cockney', Winmau 'Blade' boards."

A meeting, initiated by Francis Hoenselaar and Trina Gulliver, took place on 2nd February 2006. The main theme for discussion was the need to focus special attention towards Ladies darts, seen in the light of the recent single-minded decision by media to remove the ladies event from the World Darts Trophy."

More and more taking aim as darts gains popularity

By CHRIS COBB
The Brownsville Herald

Chris Helms didn’t want to go to a bar. He doesn’t drink.
But he was dragged by friends, nearly kicking and screaming, and they put a dart in his hand.
It stuck.
That was 18 years ago.
Now, a lot of time is spent in bars these days for Helms, currently the fifth-ranked dart player in the United States.

“For me it’s just the challenge of trying to throw a perfect game,” said Helms, who is also now an area manger for the American Dart Organization.

That allure of that “perfect game” has drawn thousands of hopeful players to the game first made popular in Medieval England, including many in the Rio Grande Valley.

“It’s just a fun game to play,” said Lee Uribe, a longtime member of the Rio Grande Valley Tropical Darts Association. "

Darts:The Brownsville Herald - Online Edition- More darts and ESPN bashing:

This appears to be more darts and ESPN bashing, but read on:

The Brownsville Herald - Online Edition: "But lately there’s a future in it, ma.

Just flip on one of the 19 ESPN channels. They’ll tell you.

One’s bound to have a couple of sunglassed characters in members-only jackets perusing their poker hand, one will have a couple of people with way too much free time making pool balls defy the laws of physics, and just recently, just to make it complete, one will have darts.

Yes, darts.

The latest of the back-alley, pool-hall games that the self-appointed god of television sports has brought into the sunshine.

Thanks, fellas. What would we do without you?"

Sharp competition, charitable aim - baltimoresun.com: "Outside in the parking lot, Nelson Reightler happily grilled a selection of meats - pit beef, ham, turkey. Burgers and hot dogs, too.

But this was neither a bar nor festival. It was Maryland's state championship dart tournament, with lots of familiar faces from the regional dart scene.

More than 200 people showed up to compete this weekend, including nationally ranked men and women. And much of the proceeds went to help a local nonprofit organization, Emerge Inc., which opened the doors of its Linthicum day center for the developmentally disabled to host the tournament."
