Chris Helms didn’t want to go to a bar. He doesn’t drink.
But he was dragged by friends, nearly kicking and screaming, and they put a dart in his hand.
It stuck.
That was 18 years ago.
Now, a lot of time is spent in bars these days for Helms, currently the fifth-ranked dart player in the United States.

“For me it’s just the challenge of trying to throw a perfect game,” said Helms, who is also now an area manger for the American Dart Organization.

That allure of that “perfect game” has drawn thousands of hopeful players to the game first made popular in Medieval England, including many in the Rio Grande Valley.

“It’s just a fun game to play,” said Lee Uribe, a longtime member of the Rio Grande Valley Tropical Darts Association. "
