Superman' flies in world finals

John Gwynne
31/ 7/2008

WORSLEY-BASED Matt Clarke enjoyed the biggest pay day of his darts career in reaching the quarter-finals of the PDC World Matchplay – and he is determined to build on the success.

Clarke, who is nicknamed ‘Superman’ or ‘Clarke of Kent’ on the back of the fact that he was born in Dartford, took away a hefty prize purse of £12,000 after losing out to reigning champion and world number three James Wade 16-12 in the televised stages in Blackpool.

Area darts team on target in Vegas

July 20, 2008 - 10:23PM
By JEFF BRANDT
For The Telegraph

BUNKER HILL - Four dart sharks from three area counties shot their way into neon-soaked Sin City glory, returning home after 11 days with trophies and stories of their conquest.

The BMFers - consisting of Bob Cuvar from Bunker Hill, Wally Wolff from Dorchester, Jon Mitts from Raymond and Dawn Methany from Okawville - held their own in Las Vegas's Riviera Hotel and Casino. The team won a cash prize and some shiny commemorative hardware for placing fourth in the B-class team event in Team Dart International Championship XXIII.

Top-notch players from six countries - Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Canada and the United States - tested their skills at the National Dart Association's annual tournament from April 18 through 26, the association Web site said. The event attracted 14,000 entrants.(Full article...)

PHIL TAYLOR'S winning bullseye at the World Matchplay final was the greatest dart EVER thrown.

That’s according to Sky Sports commentator Sid Waddell after the 13-times world champ hit a 132 checkout in his win over James Wade last Saturday.

Waddell said: “Phil Taylor is now defying the laws of physics the way he throws darts.

“Since he changed his darts on March 1 he is a more sophisticated player. He can actually get a dart to change direction just millimetres before it hits the board. (full article...)

ADO Region II-2, US Team Regional Playoffs

Hello everyone!
... This email from our ADO regional director.
Just wanted to forward on the results from this past weekend for our regional playoffs for the US Team. I would like to sincerely thank the GSDDA members and everything they are doing to support darts in Southern California. We had 11 men this time and 7 of them were from GSDDA! Thanks guys! GSDDA has truly become the backbone of support in this region and your efforts do not go unnoticed or unappreciated!

As I said, we had 11 men compete on Saturday and it was a long day of darts. For those that do not know me well....I really dislike the concept of breaking up a large group into 2 or more groups. I really dislike the "luck of the draw"! I will give you a "for instance" on why I do not break things up into 2 or more groups to play. I recently went to Houston to compete in the National playoffs for the World Masters. There were 28 women and they broke us up into 4 groups of 7. So, I went and drew my card....and I will share with you just who all was in my group. Stacy Bromberg, Carolyn Mars, Brenda Roush, Linda Anglin, Pamela Patton and Cindy Gaskin. So my "luck of the draw" puts me in a group with 3 of the top 4 women players in this country....and Linda, Pamela and Cindy are nothing to sneeze at either! And this is exactly why I dislike the "luck of the draw".

So, out of 30 possible legs won, this is how the men's event ended:

John Kramer-(The Dart Shop)-26 legs won
Charles Bradish-(GSDDA)-18 legs won
Steve Lawson-(PDA)-17 legs won (tie-breaker win)
Doug McDonough-(GSDDA)-17 legs won
Marvin Wentz-(GSDDA)-16 legs won
Curtis Pierpont-(SCDA)-16 legs won
Mark Pundt-(GSDDA)-13 legs won
Dan Jager-(GSDDA)-13 legs won
Mark Veatch-(GSDDA)-10 legs won
JD Newman-(GSDDA)-10 legs won
Mick Farrell-(VCDA)-9 legs won

Our ladies event was held on Sunday. The results in a moment, but again a HUGE! thank you extended to the men from all of the ladies involved for letting the extra money collected forwarded on to the ladies event, so we are finally able to send one man and one lady to the national playoffs fully paid without having to have any fundraisers. Props to the men for helping out the ladies!

The results for the ladies were as follows:

Anne Kramer -(Triple Crown Productions)-11 legs won
Jennifer Polefko-(The Dart Shop)-6 legs won (tie-breaker win)
Deb Pundt-(GSDDA)-6 legs won
Christa DeBoer-(The Dart Shop)-4 legs won
Joyce Bleak-(PDA)-3 legs won

And extra thanks to Lori at the Dolphin Lounge for hosting both events and making us all feel welcome.

The winners of both events will now go on to compete in the national playoff in October in Austin for the US Team, which will be for the World Cup team that will compete in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2009.

And now it is time for the cricket qualifiers to begin! Leagues and associations, please begin your qualifiers and lets see if we can get enough players qualified to be able to send 2 men and 2 ladies to Vegas to compete in the Cricket Nationals in January 2009!

Thanks again everyone for your support! Webmasters, please post on websites!

With regards,

Anne Kramer
ADO Region II-2 Director

It is all a blur for number one Dawn

A story worth reading...

JONATHAN REDHEAD
15 July 2008 11:12

Norfolk darts star Dawn Standley has defied the odds again to win another top title and become the British number one in the process.

The 40-year-old mother of two astounded herself and her opponents when picking up the British Darts Organisation's British Masters title the day after a cataract operation which left her with impaired sight and only a blurred outline of the board. (click for full article)

A note from David DePriest ...

It can be a challenge to inspire children / teens to get seriously involved in the sport of darts. Once you do get them interested it can be a even more difficult to find and get them to events in which they can participate. With that in mind I say hats of to David and Laserdarts!

I just wanted to extend a public thank you to Laserdarts for their continued efforts to promote youth darts in America.

For the past two years Laserdarts has provided financial support to youth players attending the national playoff in Stamford CT. For some children, attendance would be impossible without their help. In some cases, Laserdarts is actually making dreams come true for young people.

Youth sponsorship is a bold move that demonstrates integrity and the type of forward thinking that will grow and strengthen the American darts scene. When we give back to the youth it creates a better future for the entire community. I applaud Laserdarts and their commitment to the future of darts!

David DePriest

P.S.

If you would like to show your appreciation for Laserdarts and their involvment in youth darts sponsorship I encourage you to drop them a note of appreciation directly.

Take minute and drop them an email. Let them know we appreciate and support what they are doing. We as players need to show our support for the companies supporting our sport!!

Salvador clinches open singles tournament series

KUWAIT CITY : It was another interesting Friday for a large number of ‘darts men’ when the Alpha Phi Omega Kuwait Alumni Association held its Open Singles “One day tournament series” at the Handball Gym of the Kazma Sports Complex, Adailiya. Kennedy Salvador stood out among the competitors when he completed a landslide victory. The organizers had earlier decided to make use of the “501 and 701” modes of play in which the elimination round contenders needed to use the “501” approach in the best of 3 games. All the winners were placed in the winners bracket while the losers ended in the losers bracket, where they had to compete in the “701” knock-out matches. The initial round saw that well-oiled Kennedy Salvador ready for some real action right from the start as he went on to control his games against Lenz Bayot and John Ferrer. Such was his accuracy that all his opponents were left in his wake. (full article...)

Elite competitor tosses darts in LV

I'm not sure why I did not find this article earlier, but as they say.... "better late than never." It's always great to find articles about our star dart players!"

In Britain, people pack arenas to watch dart championships. Some pros earn millions. Yet here in Las Vegas, we have the nation's No. 1 female darter, and she may be famous in her sport, but she is obscure in her hometown. She keeps her day job to pay the bills.

Regional playoff-US Team!!! ADO Region II-2,

An email arrived today...

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the delay on this email, but I would like to announce that the next regional for the US Team will be held at the Dolphin Lounge in Anaheim.

The men will be on Saturday, July 26th with sign-ups starting at 11am and the regional starting promptly at 12 noon.

The women will be on Sunday, July 27th with sign-ups starting at 11am and the regional starting promptly at 12 noon. All paid ladies participants will receive one free drink courtesy of me to thank you for your support to ladies darts in Southern California. Without everyone's consistent participation, there would not be any ladies events!

I apologize for the 2 separate days, but the Dolphin Lounge does have soft-tip tournaments and leagues going on both of these days and I would like to split the days in order to ensure that the regional events do not get disrupted by any conflicting soft-tip events.

I have not heard from the other ADO leagues reps, however, I can tell you that we already have 2 men and 2 women qualified from the Orange County area, with one more qualifier to go that will take place at the Dolphin Lounge on July 19th. I will send an email out with the details for this soon and this will be open to any players in this region to qualify for the regional.

As an added note, I will also be selling raffle tickets for men and women separately. I will be at the Moonspinners Mixer shoot on Saturday to sell tickets and the drawings for both will take place then....probably right before they call the first singles matches of the day. If you cannot make it to the Moonspinner shoot and would still like a raffle ticket for the drawing, you have until Saturday 9am to contact me via email or phone to arrange for the purchase. So far, sadly we have no raffle tickets sold for the men...but props to the ladies because we have collected $80 so far and by drawing time, should have enough to draw for at least one complete paid entry into the regional. Thanks ladies for the awesome support of this idea! You are running strong with it and the results show!

Come on men....what are you waiting for??? The ladies are leaving you in the dust on this! For $10, you have a chance for an entry! Every $110 collected gets a drawing for a full paid entry into the regional. Our last raffle winners were Phil O'Neill from Santa Barbara, Deb Pundt from San Diego and Darla Glass-Hill received $70 toward her entry and played in her first regional ever. She's bought 4 more tickets for this one and is hooked!

Thanks everyone for your support and looking forward to seeing you this Saturday at the Moonspinner Mixer and at the regional events on July 26th and 27th!

Darts on TV - Setanta Sports

.. from an email I got just this morning.

I know I already told people about darts on Setanta Sports but I found this full article with some dates of upcoming tourneys from the BDO.

I also included some info on the LEGENDS OF DARTS which they are showing as well. Those matches have been a lot of fun to watch!! Eric Bristow, Bob Anderson, Bobby George, John Lowe, Keith Deller, Cliff Lazarenko, Peter Evison and Dave Whitcombe. From what I hear they are going to be adding Dennis Priestley next year. These are some fun matches as these guys are very serious about playing but it’s also like an exhibition in that they are playing in a more pub type atmosphere. I think they have more than water on stage too!!

Here’s the info. Sign up for Setanta NOW!

"A new and exciting BDO ‘International Grand Prix’ series, comprising five established tournaments, is to be televised live on Setanta Sports from May to September 2008 and played exclusively on the Winmau Blade III.

The five tournaments will feature LIVE coverage of the Last Eight in the Men’s Singles:

· THE WDO WELSH OPEN: Pontin’s, Prestatyn - SUNDAY, MAY 18TH

· THE BDO INTERNATIONAL OPEN Pontin’s, Brean Sands- SUNDAY, JUNE 15TH

· THE BDO GOLD CUP: Lakeside Country Club – SATURDAY, JULY 12TH

· THE BDO BRITISH CLASSIC: Kettering Leisure Village – SATURDAY, JULY 26TH

· THE BDO BRITISH OPEN: The Spa, Bridlington –SATURDAY, SEPT.20TH.

In each tournament, the final stages of the Men’s Singles from the Quarter-Finals to the Final will be broadcast LIVE on Setanta Sports.

The Welsh Open will be shown on Setanta Sports from 7PM to 12.30AM, and the remaining four tournaments will each be screened from 6.30PM to Midnight.

Though each tournament will be ‘stand-alone’ they will be played under a generic ‘umbrella’ International Grand Prix title, with points being awarded from Quarter-Finals to Final.

Trevor East, Director of Sport at Setanta Sports, said: “As part of our commitment to a wide variety of sports, we are extremely happy to be working alongside the BDO to bring this series of top darts tournaments to our viewers. Darts is an exciting sport with great across-the-board appeal, and we look forward to a successful liaison with the BDO and its players.”

Olly Croft , MD of BDO Enterprises, said: “This latest innovation for BDO televised darts, is a clear indication that in its 35th Anniversary Year the BDO continues to move forward and look after the future of our sport.

“We are delighted that BDO darts and its players will be screened by Setanta Sports, and the series of five live ‘International Grand Prix’ tournaments perfectly complements our two majors – the Lakeside World Professional and the Winmau World Masters - on BBC terrestrial TV.

“It gives the BDO a portfolio of seven televised tournaments with the real potential of providing opportunities for fresh, as well as established names, to become the darts stars and characters of today and tomorrow”.

The BDO International Grand Prix series marks a darts debut for Setanta Sports, which is a leading international pay-TV sports broadcaster operating nine channels in the UK , Ireland , North America and Australia .
