Dart News from Saigon

"Saigon Darts Team Defeats Singapore Team in Johnnie Walker Grand Prix Open - Press Release

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (OPENPRESS) September 6, 2005 -- International darts history was made and an excellent time was had by all in Vietnam’s first ever international darts sporting event which was sponsored by Johnnie Walker and held at the Oscar Hotel in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. International players made the trip for the two day event which included a match between a team from Ho Chi Minh City and a team from Singapore.

The meet took place over a two-day period with three competitions: a team event, a doubles event and a singles event. Saigon won the team event over Singapore with a score of 42-30. In the doubles tournament though the Singaporean team made up of Paul Morier and Richard Lionel Dason dominated the play, winning the final round by an impressive 4-0 score over Saigon’s Tran Thai Dung and UK’s Javed Sultan. Singaporean Paul Morier is on a roll after having just taken a second place trophy in an international singles event held in Kuala Lumpur only last month. Third place in the doubles event went to Blaine Karst and Charles Czarnecki over UK’s Tom Cummins and Percy Poon.

The singles final may well have been one of the most exciting matches of the tournament with Canadian Blaine Karst beating American Charles Czarnecki 4-2 in some really fast play. Third place in the single event went to Hong Konger Percy Poon over Vietnamese Tran Thai Dung.

“We really appreciated the Singaporean team coming here,” said Gary Dale Cearley, a co-organizer of the event, “we are doing our best to help grow darts in Vietnam and throughout the region and the support that we got from these good Singaporean darters was a giant leap for darts in Vietnam.” Cearley went on to say that this event provided a solid foundation to build on for next year’s repeat event, but the next level of Vietnam’s grow as a darts nation is to be able to take the league to outside international competitions as well. “I think we would all be happy to see Than Duc “Guppy” Liem and Tran Thai Dung and other good Vietnamese players winning matches in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as well as in Ho Chi Minh City,” says Cearley, “then Vietnam’s darters will know they have arrived.”

“On behalf of the event I would like to thank Johnnie Walker for being so generous and making this darts international possible,” said Blaine Karst, the main organizer and singles winner, “our association with Johnnie Walker has really helped the sport to grow in Vietnam by leaps and bounds. We couldn’t have a better partner.”

Hurricane Katrina Recovery Effort

Hello,
I'm sure that you have all had some time to think about the hardship and destruction that was caused by Hurricane Katrina, and maybe you have thought about what should be done about it. In our darts league we have started to discuss plans for a few benefit tourneys as well as brainstorm other ideas on how to help with the recovery effort in the Gulf Coast area of the United States.

So far some of the unaffiliated in-house leagues I'm in have donated funds from the monies that were to be used for banquets, prizes, and trophies. The bar that sponsors my team has set up collection jars so that patrons may contribute to the recovery effort as well. The organization that we have chosen to support in the recovery effort is Habitat for Humanity International.

I am certain that everyone has an organization that they would like to support in this effort so I will encourage you to contact them and make your desire to help known.

Habitat for Humanity issues emergency appeal for hurricane funds to aid families

Also be on the lookout for Aid Scams and only use reputable organizations. http://www.fema.gov/

Please support the Moorpark Billiards Tourney in any way you can!

Sports broadcasting icon dies after battling illness

Chris Schenkel, an Indiana icon and one of the founding fathers of sports broadcasting, died early Sunday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after a long battle with emphysema. He was 82.

Schenkel's radio and television broadcasting career spanned more than 60 years and included virtually every major sports competition.">Sports broadcasting icon dies after battling illness: "September 12, 2005

Well I can't really say if Chris Schenkel ever did a darts broadcast, but he is a figure that I grew up with and his sports coverage of all types of sorts truly enlightened me. I must say that I'm disappointed that there has been little coverage on TV of his passing.

Darts - Wikipedia .......

Wikipedia has a lot of greart user contributed articles. This one is about darts. A wiki allows many to collaborate on any topic or series of topics. So if you think that you have something that should be shared about a topic here's your chance to jump in and give it a shot.

There is also a Clossary of Darts at this site.

Darts From Wikipedia,
the free encyclopedia.

Darts is a game, or rather a variety of related games, in which darts are thrown at a circular target (dart board) hung on a wall. Though various different boards and games have been used in the past, the term 'darts' usually now refers to a standardized game involving a specific board design and set of rules."

A good (darts) partner is:

The other day while browsing some dart forums the topic of “What makes a good dart partner” came up. I've played several years; and have partnered with the “Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” when it comes to darts. I won't focus on the negative for now, but these things come to mind when I think about what makes........

A good partner is:
Calm in the face of tough challenge
Confidence in him or herself
Confident that his or her partner will do their best
Not going to engage in a lot of complaining about the other team
Assertive when engaged in a debate about important issues
Able to avoid needless debate
Able to accept when they are not on their game without blaming others, or circumstances
Willing to do their best regardless of their partner's or opponent's abilities
Willing to accept appropriate feedback or instruction and discard the useless chatter
Able to celebrate success without gloating
Able to accept your reasons for taking a shot without a lot of second guessing
Is always optimistic
Is a good sport

I have rarely found all these qualities in one player; but I have found some partners that I truly enjoyed and each has demonstrated several of them, and they are the ones that inspired me to do my best in all levels of competition.

Doreen Berry on Tour 2005

Doreen Berry on Tour 2005 - online journal

Doreen Berry, a top USA player, has been keeping an online journal of her tournament efforts this year. I've been keeping an eye on her progress, but for some reason I have not posted anything about it in this blog (I really thought I had), but now after checking in I see that she is going to reduce the amount of tournaments she participates in during 2006 siting spending more time with family. Botswana Relies On Youth in Regional Darts Tourney

Its not often that you hear a lot about darts in Africa, but I ran across this and thought this article is worth a look.

Botswana Relies On Youth in Regional Darts Tourney

Mmegi/The Reporter (Gaborone)

August 30, 2005

Monkagedi Gaotlhobogwe

A 25-strong Botswana darts team left for Swaziland yesterday for the Zone VI tournament. Before departure, coach Kegolotswe Morutwa said that they hope to win medals, especially in the youth section.

Botswana will participate in doubles and singles for boys and girls; and men and women. The country hosted the tournament last year and finished fourth after the girls' doubles team of Refilwe Morutwa and Masego Kegorogile secured a silver medal.

..... coach Morutwa feels that the youth team is better equipped this year. "We have had coaching clinics twice a month in Mahalapye. We have also been fortunate that most of the players in the team are based in Francistown and so they could train together and bond unlike in the past,"
