Official viewing figures released by the BBC show that the Lakeside World Professional Championships remain a firm favourite with the viewing public.

Saturday's Semi-Finals had a average of 2 million viewers with the Fitton v O'Shea match peaking at 2.7million viewers while the Hankey v Adams match peaked at 2.3 million. (full report link...)

The BDO Finals from Lakeside are on today, and it looks to be a great match! However there is one thing I have noticed about the events at Lakeside that is not great...

and that would be the press coverage! It does not compare to the gallons (liters)
of ink poured out about the PDC and the Ally Pally....

Maybe it's about charisma of the PDC Players and the PDC's marketing machine, because it seems that the standard of play in both the PDC and the BDO has been on the rise over the past few years...

'Teapot' arrows in on top TV final

DARTS star Tim "Teapot" Jones is playing for big money after bagging a place in the final of the John Smith's People's Darts competition.

The Teapot, from Neath, got a few tips from world champions earlier this week when he slung his arrows at the Lakeside Country Club, in Surrey.

The venue is hosting the BDO World Championships, which is being televised on the BBC.

Tim beat two opponents to clinch his place in Sunday's final of the amateur John Smith's event, which takes place at the Lakeside just before the final of the World Championships proper. (full article...)

A GUARD of honour made up of some of the world's top darts players bid Lakenheath's Shaun Greatbatch an emotional farewell from the BDO world championships on Sunday.
Greatbatch, who was diagnosed with myeloma – a rare form of bone marrow cancer – last summer, left the stage to a standing ovation after he was beaten by former world champion John Walton in the first round of the 2009 event at Lakeside.

Eurosport throws darts into Asia

NEWS BRIEF: Eurosport has confirmed a three-year deal with BBC Worldwide for the annual World Professional Darts Championship, the 2009 outing of which is currently taking place in the UK and unfolding on BBC2.

The deal with the EBU-backed sports channel gives it rights to air the event not only across Europe (excluding the UK and Ireland) but also Asia (excluding Japan and China) until 2011. Eurosport will show 20 hours of the competition on its channels.

Darts: Adams made to work hard for his second-round place

THIRD SEED Martin Adams scraped through to the second round of the BDO World Darts Championships with a narrow 3-2 win against unseeded debutant Dave Chisnall.

Adams (left), who won the title in 2007, led 2-1 in the final set but Chisnall replied with a 180 to make it 2-2. Adams then led 3-2 and 4-3 before clinching the victory with a double 12.

“That was a hard game but will give me confidence for the next round,” said Adams afterwards.

“(Double) tops was awful to me – I could not have bought the double tonight.

“Dave is a good player who took the Isle of Man Open in the spring and has had a good inter-counties season. I got what I expected – a hard game.”

In other action at Lakeside, Scotland’s Ross ’The Boss’ Montgomery beat Martin Phillips 3-1 courtesy of a 156 checkout in the third set, to book a second-round clash with former champion Ted Hankey.

Montgomery said: “The first round is always difficult. There is a lot of tension so I will look forward to my next game when hopefully there will not be as much pressure.”

Northern Irish 22-year-old Daryl Gurney saw off Garry Thompson 3-1 to set up a tie with Adams, and Martin Atkins beat Joey Ten Berge 3-2.

The Lordswood player faces No.4 seed Scott Waites, a close friend and his pairs partner.

Bolton darter Lisa set for world bid

LOCAL darts player Lisa Ashton is celebrating after landing herself a place at the BDO World Championships.

The 38-year-old, who plays for the Lord Raglan in the Astley Bridge Darts League, will compete against seven other women from four countries in the prestigious event at the Lakeside.

Ashton qualified after winning the Holland Open earlier this month – beating three champions in the process.

DARTS: Gulliver faces battle to reclaim crown

Oxfordshire’s Trina Gulliver says she faces a real battle to win back her BDO Lakeside Women’s World Professional title at Frimley Green, starting this weekend.

Gulliver, 39, takes on debutant Lisa Ashton in the first round at 7.40pm on Saturday.

The seven-time world champion saw her run ended by Anastasia Dobromyslova in the 2008 final, but the Russian has now jumped ship to the rival PDC organisation. (full article...)

DARTS - Phillips in world title tilt

WELSH skipper and Gwynedd County Darts player Martin Phillips will take part in his eighth world championship in the New Year.
His first round opponent in the Lakeside BDO World Professional Championships on January 4, will be Scotland's Ross Montgomery.

Phillips was in action last week when he made the quarter-finals of the Zuiderduin Masters in the Netherlands. (full article...)
