One Dart to appear at charity exhibition

WORLD darts star Peter Manley will be taking on allcomers during an exhibition of his skills for charity at Ludgvan Community Centre on Saturday, December 13 from 7.30pm onwards.

Nicknamed "One Dart" for his knack of hitting doubles with his first dart, Manley, 46, is currently ranked No 13 in the world, and has been a PDC World Championship finalist three times, twice being beaten 7-0 by Phil Taylor.

This famously led to a long-running feud between the two men after the 2002 final culminating in his refusal to shake Taylor's hand at the end of the match. These days a more relaxed Manley is better liked by fans since changing his entrance music to Is This The way to Amarillo?.

During his appearance at Ludgvan, Manley (pictured), who is co-sponsored by Penzance-based Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding, will be playing a series of about 15 games against local players and all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Precious Lives Appeal. There will also be a raffle.

Don't write me off, says darts ace Peter Manley

Manley has been boosted by a sponsorship deal from pork scratchings firm Mr Porkys – but admits he has made a pig’s ear of the big tournaments with early exits in almost all the major events.

That has seen him slump to No16 in the world – his lowest ranking since the PDC was formed.

But the 46-year-old former world No1, famed for his feud with Phil Taylor, insists he’s not finished.

He said: “I’ve no doubt that people are writing me off and there’s probably a lot of my rivals who would love to see the back of me – I’m far from finished though.

“I’ve a great sponsor in Mr Porkys and I don’t want to let them down.

“You could say I’ve made a pig’s ear of the major events so far but I’ll be back.

“The birth oft he premier League has given me post-natal depression.

“We’ve got so used to playing in front of huge crowds that anything else is a let-down. It’s also tiring with all the travelling.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted that darts is booming but we have all had to adjust our game and stamina top cope with the demand.

“I also do a lot of exhibitions but I guess that’s had an effect on me too. I’ve been really busy.

“It’s disappointing to have slipped down the rankings but there’s a lot more darts to play yet this year and I’ve got time to redeem myself.”

Despite being ranked No1 in the PDC world rankings for over a year, Manley has managed to win only one major tournament with the PDC, the 2003 Las Vegas Desert Classic.

He has reached the World Championship final three times, but lost them all to his nemesis Taylor and two of those defeats were heavy 7-0 reversals. (story source...)

Manley - Sun article

MOUTHY Peter Manley last night blasted: I’m going to leave my rivals pig sick.

The controversial Carlisle thrower - sponsored by pork scratchings firm Mr Porkys - has had a disappointing year with early exits in almost all of the major tournaments.

He recently lost in the first round of the Sky Poker Grand Prix in Dublin and has now slumped to No16 in the world rankings, his lowest place since the PDC was formed.

But Manley, 46 - famed for his wind-up tactics on opponents - said: “I’ve no doubt that people are writing me off and good luck to them.

“There’s probably quite a lot of my rivals who would love to see the back of me but I’m far from finished, I’m not retiring yet.

“I’ve got a great sponsor in Mr Porkys and I don’t want to let them down. You could say I’ve made a pig’s ear of the major events so far but I’ll be back.

“There’s no hiding from the fact that I’ve been on a bad run and I’m not surprised to be honest.

“It’s down to the birth of the Premier League - and it’s given me post-natal depression. We’ve got so used to playing in front of huge crowds week-in, week-out that anything else afterwards is a big let-down.

“It’s also quite tiring, the Premier League takes out half of your week for the first 14 weeks of the year, the travelling does get quite hard.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted that darts is booming but we have all had to adjust our game and stamina to cope with the demand.”

‘One Dart’ Manley, who once gave rival Adrian Lewis so much verbal during a TV clash that he stormed off stage, also feels his panto villain reputation has also contributed to his poor form.

He added: “I do a lot of exhibitions around the country because everyone likes a controversial character but I guess that’s had an effect on me. I’ve been really busy.

“It’s disappointing to have slipped down the rankings but there’s a lot more darts to play yet this year and I’ve got time to redeem myself.

“My aim is to make it into the Premier League but I want to get there on merit by being in the world’s top six. I’d rather that than rely on a wild card place just because I’m good box office and so the fans can boo at someone.

“My big problem is motivation. I have enough money in the bank not to worry about my next pay cheque and I’ve slipped into the comfort zone.

“It’s a difficult state of mind to get out of but I need to get my act together to get back into the Premier League.”

Unicorn - The Premier League dream is over

The Premier League dream is over for Unicorn trio Colin Lloyd, Peter Manley and Adrian Lewis after all three were beaten on night 12 of the 2007 tournament in Blackburn.

But Phil Taylor powers on…..he demolished Lloyd to secure top spot ahead of the play-offs and extend that remarkable unbeaten Premier League run to 40 matches.

The top four for the semi-finals in Brighton will feature Taylor, Raymond Van Barneveld, Dennis Priestley and Terry Jenkins. Mathematically, Roland Scholten could still catch Priestley but he would have to win his final two matches 8-0 or 8-1 and hope Priestley loses his last two games by the same score…..realistically, that isn’t going to happen.

Wk 10 Holsten Premier League Darts

MATCH REPORTS frmo the tenth league night of the 2007 Holsten Premier League Darts from the BIC in Bournemouth with PlanetDarts.

Highlights will be available in DartsTV from Friday evening.

Holsten Premier League Darts
Night Ten, Bournemouth

Peter Manley 7-7 Raymond van Barneveld
Colin Lloyd 5-8 Adrian Lewis
Roland Scholten 7-7 Dennis Priestley
Phil Taylor 8-1 Terry Jenkins
Planet Darts: Wk 10 Holsten Premier League Darts

True grit but Dennis isn't happy

DENNIS Priestley had the look of a man who'd lost a pound but found a penny, even though some good old Yorkshire grit earned him a 7-7 draw with Roland Scholten.

In a nip-and-tuck encounter, the willowy frame of the Dutchman Scholten and his fluid technique appeared to have Priestley's number, particularly with a flurry of 180 starts as he piled the pressure on the double world champion.

But Priestley, who led 4-2 and then trailed 6-4, showed some of his old magic as he eventually clawed his way back into the contest with his slow and methodical throwing style taking out a crucial 127 finish to tie the match at 6-6. Thisisdorset

Peter Manley frustrated Raymond van Barneveld in the opening match of the Bournemouth meet in the Premier League, coming from behind to draw 7-7 against the World Champion.

For the majority of the contest it looked like the Dutch destroyer would ease to victory, particularly after building a 4-2 lead midway through the contest.

PETER Manley has rocketed up three places to four in the new-look darts’ world rankings after raking in over £100,000 in prize money over the past two years.

The ranking system has changed to reflect winnings, following last week’s world championship final, when Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld stunned favourite Phil Taylor in a classic clash.
