Tournaments take the Fitzgeralds away from home about once a month. Each week, though, they can find local games sponsored by the Fredericksburg Area Dart Association or the Prince William Dart Association. The Prince William group is helping to foot J.P.'s fees for the upcoming nationals.
At stake, for the youth, is scholarship money. So far, J.P. has earned $2,000 in scholarships as a result of the national competition. Smaller tournaments award gift cards or other non-monetary awards so that the youth can maintain amateur status. That's all right for now, says J.P. But he has ambitions. At first, the Massaponax High rising senior deflects the question of what happens after high school. But pressed, he smiled broadly and said he would like to turn pro.
