ENGLAND darts captain Martin Adams believes an increase in Raymond van Barneveld's self-belief enabled the Dutchman to conquer Phil Taylor in their epic Ladbrokes.com World Championship final.
Adams knows Van Barneveld well, the pair having been rivals in the British Darts Organisation which the 39-year-old left last February to join the Professional Darts Corporation.

Now we've chucked away the darts crown
By Jim White
So another one goes. Just a day into 2007 and England's headlong drift to the sporting basement continues. After the football, rugby and cricket humiliations of 2006, comes the big one: on New Year's Day the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship title went east, snatched by the Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld in a match Sky's commentators were calling the greatest ever game of arrows long before the last tip hit the board. It was a sad moment. As Barneveld lifted the trophy, the English sporting canary finally expired.

Darts: Tubby or not tubby, that is the question for Taylor after defeat
Gary Jacob
# Beaten finalist blames lost stamina
# Barneveld profits from £1 investment
Phil Taylor will never be slim, but the 13-times world champion has decided that a fitter body will mean a fitter mind after losing his title in a marathon tussle on Monday night to the younger and relatively more svelte Raymond van Barneveld.
Van Barneveld, 39, has become the most celebrated man in his native Netherlands after his dramatic victory over Taylor, coming back from three sets down to win on a sudden-death leg. The Dutchman has received messages of congratulation from the Prime Minister and Queen of the Netherlands as well as from the owner of a shop in The Hague where he bought a set of new darts for £1 three months ago.

English sport takes a knock as the future of darts turns orange
Barneveld Ding Dong!
Raymond van Barnevald, the former postman, truly delivered the goods to come back from 3-0 and 5-3 down against darts legend Phil "The Power" Taylor. When Taylor raced into a 3-0 lead, a shellshocked Barney looked to have nothing to give. But Taylor seemed to take his foot of the gas and the Dutchman got into his stride and pulled out the big scores from the bag marked 180 - a stunning 21 by the end.
It was truly a sporting classic to begin 2007. However, after the ignominy for England during 2006, a defeat of Taylor in the opening sporting salvo of the year doesn't bode well for national sporting success. If Taylor, a 13-times world champion and generally one of the few jewels in the heavily looted crown that is English sport, fails, what chance the rest?

Darts: Barneveld achieves treble ambitions at first time of asking

Published: 03 January 2007
At 39 he has probably made too many visits to the oche ever to supersede Phil Taylor as the greatest player to have thrown a dart, but Raymond van Barneveld's performance in beating the 13-times world champion on Monday night underlined the status of the Dutchman and the Englishman as the best current exponents of the game.
Van Barneveld won an epic three-hour final at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, Essex, to take the Professional Darts Corporation's version of the world championship for the first time. Recovering from 3-0 down, the former postman from The Hague won a sudden-death final leg after the scores had finished at 6-6 in sets and 5-5 in legs in the decider.

From its rowdy crowd to its pot-bellied practitioners, darts has never strayed too far from its drinking, smoking pub roots
I AM - in the interests of research, of course - eating a steak and kidney pie. It is not just any pie. It is a "luxury pie" and, with a few formerly frozen French fries, it has cost me £3.50. Needless to say, it is no more a "luxury" pie than Mr Byrite is a "luxury" clothes emporium, but, claggy crust notwithstanding, it is edible.

DARTS: Taylor and Barney relish final throw
SUNDAY 31/12/2006 16:23:07
Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld have set up the dream final at the Ladbrokes.com World Championship in Purfleet.
The two best players on the planet both sparkled in their semi-finals last night, each recording a 6-0 whitewash against dangerous opponents who had been on top form previously.
Van Barneveld took only an hour to win 6-0 against Andy Jenkins, which meant he could sit back and watch Taylor try to beat Andy `The Hammer` Hamilton.
