RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD'S 12-month quest to depose Phil Taylor as the undisputed king of darts reaches the moment of truth today in the Ladbrokes.com World Championship final.

The showdown every fan of the sport wanted to see has become a reality as the two best players on the planet go head-to-head at Purfleet's Circus Tavern for the £100,000 first prize.

IT'S THE FLIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD

DREAM finals between a Dutch postman and a former ceramic engineer who manufactured toilet handles are rarities on the sporting calendar.

But after the great expectation, and colossal failure, of England's national teams in football, rugby and cricket last year, at least 2007 begins with a duel worthy of any first-class stamp or royal flush.

Darts: Barneveld says power of Zen can foil Taylor Van Barneveld on Taylor: 'I gave up everything I had with the BDO to get to this final and to beat this man'

There was a time when the world's best darts players might limber up before a match with a couple of pints of lager and a quick warm-up on one of the practice boards. Raymond van Barneveld, however, will prepare for the biggest contest of his career here in Purfleet tonight with lengthy practice sessions broken only by periods of meditation.

The Dutchman completes a remarkable first year on the Professional Darts Corporation circuit by taking on Phil "The Power" Taylor in the final of the Ladbrokes.com World Championship. The thought of facing the 13-times champion can intimidate opponents, but "Barney" will enter the Circus Tavern in a relaxed frame of mind.

An email conversation with Bobby George: 'Being on that stage is better than making love'

The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships get under way on Saturday. Who's your tip for the top this year and why?

It is difficult but, going on performance over the past year, I would have to go for Michael van Gerwen, the No 3 seed. He is the reigning Winmau World Master and, at 17 years old, has the ability and, more importantly, the temperament, to take the pressure on a big stage.

You got pretty close to getting through the qualification process for the championships yourself this year. It must have been disappointing to have got so near and yet so far.

Raymond van Barneveld's dream of deposing Phil Taylor as the world's best player comes within reach today when the two meet in the Ladbrokes.com World Championship final. The most eagerly awaited showdown for years will take place at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet for a £100,000 first prize after both men won their semi-finals on Saturday with ease.

A year ago the Dutchman was part of the British Darts Organisation, whose version of the world championship he had won four times. But Van Barneveld switched to the rival Professional Darts Corporation in February and the 39-year-old admits it was the lure of Taylor's title that influenced decision.

Raymond van Barneveld says he is desperate to cause an upset in the PDC World Darts Championship final when he meets Phil Taylor.
Both the 13-time world champion Taylor, and four-time BDO world champion van Barneveld, booked their place in the final after crushing their semi-final opponents 6-0, and van Barnevald says he is relishing going up against his biggest rival.
