So another one goes. Just a day into 2007 and England's headlong drift to the sporting basement continues. After the football, rugby and cricket humiliations of 2006, comes the big one: on New Year's Day the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship title went east, snatched by the Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld in a match Sky's commentators were calling the greatest ever game of arrows long before the last tip hit the board. It was a sad moment. As Barneveld lifted the trophy, the English sporting canary finally expired.
Now we've chucked away the darts crown
