Newly-crowned world champion Raymond van Barneveld reckons his victory over Phil Taylor could inspire other players to switch off 'The Power'.

Taylor has won 13 world titles but was denied a 14th by Barneveld's epic 7-6 victory in the final at Purfleet on New Year's Day.

"The Power" relinquished a three-set lead at Purfleet's Circus Tavern as Van Barneveld held his nerve at the end of a thrilling duel to claim a fifth world title and the £100,000 first prize.

The match had been hyped up like no other in darts history and fully justified its billing, going all the way to the 11th leg of the final set before Van Barneveld hit the decisive double top.

I never thought I would write those words. Indeed, in the past I might even have hesitated to describe darts as a sport.

Raymond van Barneveld staged a magnificent fightback from three sets down against Phil Taylor on Monday night to win a Ladbrokes.com World Championship final in Purfleet that lived up to all the hype.

The showdown between the two best players on the planet had been billed as the dream final and that was completely justified as the Dutchman prevailed 7-6 to deny Taylor a 14th world title.
