Local News - Stamford Today: At home with darts champ Wolfie

AN anagram of Martin Adams' name, amazingly, is "I'm a darts man" – and right now he's king of the world. My pals have all been round," said the man they call "Wolfie" because of his lupine appearance, "but I'm still coming down to earth. The phone hasn't stopped ringing." Lest the newly-crowned British Darts Organisation world champion thought Sunday's nailbiting triumph over 500-1 underdog Phil Nixon was a glorious dream, the Congratulations cards – from such luminaries as Andy Fordham and Bobbie George – are there to prove it. They line the mantlepiece at the cosy Deeping St James home he shares with wife Sharon, and the mighty trophy itself – like a larger, shinier version of the FA Cup – remains within kissing distance. "It's going with me wherever I go," vows the genial giant in his Surrey brogue, feet up on the coffee table. "I'm not letting it out of my sight.

MARTIN ADAMS wants the ultimate honour after finally landing world title glory — an open-top tractor ride through East Anglia.

Adams, from Peterborough, is determined to enjoy the spoils of victory after a thrilling 7-6 BDO final triumph against qualifier Phill Nixon.

But instead of a gala reception with darts bigwigs or a tickertape parade, ‘Wolfie’, 50, wants to celebrate in his own Anglian style.

He said: “I’ll spend the next couple of days celebrating and then I’ll be going down to my local pub to milk it some more.

Pay us what we're worth, says Gulliver

Jan 15 2007

By Matt Bozeat

TRINA GULLIVER hopes the thrilling win that brought her a seventh successive world title will attract the investment needed to secure the future of women's darts.

Gulliver claimed a cheque for £6,000 that she described as "derisory" after holding her nerve in a thrilling deciding leg shoot-out against Frances Hoenselaar to retain her crown at the BDO Lakeside women's world championship in Frimley Green.

The withdrawal of the lucrative women's event at the Bavaria World Trophy last year was a blow to the sport and Gulliver has joined forces with Hoenselaar to set up the Ladies' Darts Association in a bid to bring more money into the sport.

DARTS: Trina on top of the world By Nick Farrant Trina Gulliver (pictured) has spoken of her delight after she lifted the world championship crown for the seventh time with a thrilling 2-1 win against Dutch ace Francis Hoenselaar at the Lakeside, Frimley Green. Gulliver, 37, who plays for The Shears in Wantage, struggled, lost the first set to the world No 2. However, the world No 1, who plays darts for a living, battled back to level at 1-1. The first two legs of the decider were also shared. But in sudden death, Gulliver reached the check-out first and hit double 18 to clinch victory.

By common consent, Raymond van Barneveld’s comeback to win the Ladbrokes.com World Championship two weeks ago was probably the greatest final in the history of the PDC circuit, but the final of the BDO World Championships last night proved to be equally dramatic. Phill Nixon, a qualifier, staged an astonishing revival to claw his way back from six sets down before he finally lost to Martin Adams, 7-6.

Darts: Adams overcomes jitters to end long wait for world title

By Jon Wilde

Published: 15 January 2007

Martin Adams resisted an amazing fightback from fellow 50-year-old Phill Nixon to capture the British Darts Organisation World Championship for the first time with a nervy 7-6 win at Lakeside in Surrey last night.

The duo were the two oldest players in the competition with only three months between them in age, but for most of the final there was a huge gulf as Adams stormed into a 6-0 lead.

But Nixon, a house-husband from Durham, suddenly struck form when only one leg from defeat and reeled off six sets himself to give his opponent serious worries. Adams, the top seed, is renowned for being affected by the jitters with the winning post in sight and despite his huge advantage it happened again.

FERRYHILL Flyer Phill Nixon had his legions of fans on the edge of their seats last night as he edged a thrilling nine-set quarter final, 5-4, to take his place in the Lakeside World Darts Championship, BDO, semi-final at Frimley Green.

Nixon appeared to be cruising to victory only to start missing doubles, allowing his Scottish opponent, 15th seed Paul Hanvidge, back into the game.

DE RUITER FLYING THE FLAG

By Jon Wilde,
PA Sport Niels de Ruiter is the unlikely hero carrying Dutch hopes on his shoulders in Saturday's semi-finals of the Lakeside World Championship in Frimley Green. Of the seven representatives from the Netherlands who started the tournament a week ago only De Ruiter remains - something very few people would have predicted, including the player himself. The man known as 'The Excellent Dude' plays qualifier Phil Nixon - another rank outsider at the start of the event - for a place in the final against top seed Martin Adams or Mervyn King.

Darts: De Ruiter shows courage of Dutch

Gary Jacob
Niels de Ruiter might not be the Dutchman that everyone had come to marvel at, but he pulled off a stirring comeback to defeat Gary Robson 5-4 last night. De Ruiter was never ahead in a fascinating encounter until the third leg of the final set, but he will play in his first semi-final of the BDO World Championships today.

There seemed to be no way back for De Ruiter when he went two sets down, but he displayed fighting qualities at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey. It might take an inspired performance to stop him becoming the third consecutive Dutchman to take the title tomorrow.
