First Round Shocks at Las Vegas
30 June 2005
There were some big shocks in the Desert Classic first round, with Mark Dudbridge, former winner Peter Manley and Ronnie Baxter all being hustled out of the competition.
SID’S DIARY

Heading for Las Vegas to commentate on top darts just does my head in. Who’d have thought back in the first days of televised darts at the Indoor League at the Leeds Irish Centre in 1973 that we’d take the game this far?
This site is worth a look!

How is an article about baseball related to darts?
SignOnSanDiego.com - Injuries prove tougher than NL West foes: "First baseman Phil Nevin has lately been immobilized by a rib cage problem, so much so that he prepared himself for yesterday's game by watching a televised darts tournament."
Even baseball players admire the skill and concentration require to play top level darts. We can all learn from watching darts on TV!

A story I found on the web ....
A story many dart players could learn from...
"After winning several archery contests, the young and rather boastful champion challenged a Zen master who was renowned for his skill as an archer. The young man demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency when he hit a distant bull's eye on his first try, and then split that arrow with his second shot. 'There,' he said to the old man, 'see if you can match that!'
Undisturbed, the master did not draw his bow, but rather motioned for the young archer to follow him up the mountain. Curious about the old fellow's intentions, the champion followed him high into the mountain until they reached a deep chasm spanned by a rather limsy and shaky log. Calmly stepping out onto the middle of the unsteady
and certainly perilous bridge, the old master picked a far away tree as a target, drew his bow, and fired a clean, direct hit.
'Now it is your turn,' he said as he gracefully stepped back onto the safe ground. Staring with terror into the seemingly bottomless and beckoning abyss, the young man could not force himself to step out onto the log, no less shoot at a target. 'You have much skill with your bow,' the master said, sensing his challenger's predicament, 'but you have little skill with the mind that lets loose the shot.'"

A Fun Event with former World Champion Dennis Priestley
I must say that the SBDA hosted a marvelous event at Dargan's Irish Pub , Santa Barbara CA sponsoring a dart exhibition by former World Champion Dennis Priestley. Dennis has an impressive resume in the darting world:
England International
World Champions Challenge Winner
World Champion 1991 – 1994
World Pairs Champion
Winmau World Master
British Matchplay
SKOL Quadro Matchplay – Twice
British Pentahlon
British Open
Welsh Open
Canadian Open – Twice
Australian Masters
Pacific Cup
Laughlin Gran Prix USA
Boston Open USA
Los Angeles USA – Twice
Atlantic City USA – Twice
Antwerp Open – Twice
Jersey Open
Isle of Man – Twice
Gold Cup – Twice
British Classic
Eric Schiefen & Phil O'Niell of the the SBDA ran the event; Eric soliciting players to face Dennis and Phil running the video camera to record the event.
The event was setup to allow anyone who wanted to play Dennis would face him in 501 on stage in front of everyone in that section of the bar. Winning 2 out of 3 (lose the first leg and you are out of the running) earns a set of Dennis' signature darts. Dennis played 22 legs of darts winning them all, throwing 3 – 8T0's & a 13 dart game on the night.
News that caught me off guard on the night was Bobby English, long time Ventura County Darts Assoc member, sharing with us that he has retired from darts effective as of the end of our last VCDA season and was reluctant to come out of retirement to play Dennis. After swapping a few darts stories and some friendly convincing he came out of his retirement for the night and played a leg against Dennis, of note Bobby was one of the few to take the cork against Dennis. Mick Farrell (VCDA) also faced off with Dennis a couple of times.

Many of the 1000 members and guests attending the National Championship have already adjusted their travel plans to ensure they will not miss the historic draw doubles taking place on Wednesday afternoon, August 3rd during this live SC broadcast. The Dart Thrower FAQ - x01 outs
Selecting the right numbers to shoot at is the most important part of winning at '01 games so shooting at “friendly sections” of the board can can save some missed opportunities and therefore lost matches. This item looks at some of those combinations that might come in handy.
The finish in the '01 game is what matters most, and I know that there are times when shooting for outs during a game your combinations can slip your mind. This link provides a discussion of which areas of the board are favorable targets in that situation.
The Dart Thrower FAQ - x01 outs: "Question : In the 301 double in/out games I frequently have no idea what to aim at to have the best leave. I saw a chart once that had all the numbers listed from 301 - 2 and indicated what to throw at to go out or leave the best number. Do you know where I might find such a listing again?
Please let me know.
Dwayne"
There are several combinations of the type you mentioned. Many of them you surely know, but I'll give them here. Most of them use the dartboard layout with the 3 'even wedges' at 16/8, 10/6 and 18/4 or the large 'odd wedge' 7/19/3/17
46: 6/10
35: 3/19
38: 6/10
25: 17/3 (I'd only recommend this when the match is very close)
42: 10/6
41: 17/3 (see 25)
23: 7/19/3
39: 7/19/3
22: 6/10
30: 6/10
26: 6/10
48: 16/8
64: T16/T8
61: T19/T7 (if you don't like bull here)
54: 18/(4) (see 25)
18: 6/10
21: 17/3 (see 25)
43: 3/19
56: T16/T8
17: 9/(14) (because you are still on with 3 if you miss the 9, but only if you have 3 darts in hand
and it's close)
19: 11 or 15, or 3/17 (see 25...)
68: T12/9 (because you will have single+dbl when you miss to 9, and on the usual 60 shot you
will leave 63 or 67 worst)

SIX thousand fans enjoyed two days of televised darts at the Reebok stadium at the weekend.
The Premier Suite was home to the Budweiser UK Open Darts Tournament, which was screened live by Sky Sports.
It was the third time that the tournament has been held at the Reebok and organisers were delighted with a record-breaking turnout.
Over the two day event, 12,500 pints of Budweiser were consumed by sports fans, along with 150kg of chips and 3,750 hot-dogs and burgers.
Bolton Wanderers spokesman Danny Reuben said that attendance figures for the weekend had reached a new high.
'The crowd was 25 per cent up on previous years and the opening day saw a 50 per cent increase from last year. For the first time ever the event was complete sell-out.'

The biggest man in darts
The biggest man in darts "Voice of the oche Martin Fitzmaurice claims to be the biggest man in darts... and you only have look at his impressive bulk to know just what he is referring to.
You may not instantly recognise the name, but he is the man behind that familiar Embassy bellow of: ''One hundred and eeeeighty'' - and of course: 'Let's play daaarts!'"
You have got to love this voice! They should get him and Michael Buffer (boxing "ring announcer") together to call a match in Las Vegas!

Darts + Love = Wedding
This may not be the way I would do it, but....
Couple tie knot at dart tourney
By KAY HIVELY / Special to the Daily News
NOEL -- Rob Manning and Gina Edington got married Friday night at the Noel Rafting Co. Campground in Noel.
The wedding was set for 6 p.m.
5:30 p.m. - Two friends, Janet Wesley and Kim Jackson, decorated the 'altar' where the vows would be taken.
5:40 p.m. - The bride came to look at the decorations which were strung from a message board and a dart board down to the spot where the couple would stand to take their vows.
5:45 p.m. - The groom brought the 'paperwork' to the pastor so the legal business could be taken care of.
5:50 p.m. - The groom was hunting someone to use his camera to take pictures of the wedding.
5:52 p.m. - The groomsmen and the groom removed their T-shirts in front of the wedding guests and donned T-shirt tuxedos.
5:55 p.m. - A groomsman brought his 'boom box' for hard rock wedding music.
6 p.m. - The bride, in a lovely dress, entered the tent and took her place beside the groom.
6:15 p.m. - The couple are pronounced man and wife and make their first 'dart throw' together as a married couple.
6:15 p.m. - The bride and the groom enjoyed the traditional kiss at the altar.
And then it was time to congratulate the newlyweds and return to the dart games.
After meeting at the 2004 Chicken Coop Darts Tournament, Rob Manning and Gina Edington chose the 2005 tournament as the site for their wedding. The ceremony, performed by Rev. Rick Thomas of Jay, Okla., was held under the big tent where the dart tournament is staged.
Competition in the tournament continued right up to the time of the wedding. Then, as the wedding began, competitors joined friends and families of the bride and groom around one of the dart boards for the wedding service.
Encouraging the couple to love and respect each other and to let God be the center of their household, Rev. Thomas united the couple, then stepped aside as the newly-weds each threw a dart before the final kiss.
Rev. Thomas admitted the wedding was a bit unusual for him. He normally doesn't perform a ceremony where most of the guests are holding bottles of beer, and he meets the bride and groom only minutes before the appointed hour. But the unorthodox circumstances did not hamper the happiness of the occasion.
Prior to their wedding, both the bride and groom were excited, nervous and happy to see so many friends and family members. Even though the temperature was about 87 degrees and the campground was somewhat dusty, nothing seemed to bother the happy couple.
During the ceremony, the nervous groom wiped drops of sweat from his nose and chin, and the weepy bride wiped tears from her cheeks.
In the end, it was a lovely and happy event, and everyone who attended will probably remember this wedding better than they remember their own. But a wedding is a wedding. If you have a minister, a beautiful bride, a proud groom, and some spoken vows, that's all it takes to make two people very happy."

PDC AND PDPA EVENT
This has the makings of a fun event:
PDC AND PDPA Calendar
Tournament: Budweiser UK Open TV Final
Ranking Status: Premier
Dates: 10 June 2005 to 12 June 2005
Venue: Reebok Stadium"
Extra Information:The 128 highest money earners from the Budweiser UK Open Order of Merit go head-to-head in the FA Cup of Darts.
Reigning Budweiser UK Open champion Roland Scholten and 12-times world champion Phil Taylor enter the tournament at the fourth round stage on Saturday, with the leading players filtering into the draw.
The event will be televised in its entirety live on Sky Sports.
The tournament is one of five Premier Category events in the Professional Darts Corporation calendar, and carries a £30,000 prize for the winner and a total prize fund in excess of £100,000.
It's just too bad that we don't get to see many of these events here in the US.
I would hope at some point major darts events such as this could be televised here, or streamed live over the Internet. At the very least these could be distributed at low cost via bittorrent.
