Mohegan Sun, ESPN try to turn another game into a phenomenon:
"Paul Munick, Mohegan Sun's senior vice president of sports and entertainment, said hosting the dart tournament lets the casino in on what could be the next big craze. And 'it's more television exposure for the property,' he said.
He said ESPN shows the poker tournament over and over again and likely would do the same with darts if it becomes popular. The tournament will air in eight one-hour episodes in July.
Keri Potts, a spokesman for ESPN, said poker interest boomed because it is a game anyone -- like Moneymaker -- can play and play well.
'That's the appeal,' Potts said.
And just about anyone can play in the darts' world-class, metal-tip tournament. The 16 American players will be chosen from 12 open, regional tournaments, giving the event the chance to find its own Chris Moneymaker.
ESPN, based in Bristol, doesn't believe darts will take off like poker did, but Potts said it has the potential to grow quite a bit."
