CAMBRIDGESHIRE have retained their British Inter-Counties League, Premier Division status.
But their relief at avoiding relegation was tinged with disappointment after their women’s A team missed the chance of winning their section championship.
Overall, Cambs lost 22-17 to Essex in their final game, but results elsewhere condemned Oxfordshire and Surrey to the drop, although the defeat sent Cambs plunging to eight place – 10 points and one rung above the danger zone.
However, in the compacted lower half of the table, where 22 points separated fifth from 10th before the final round, Cambs virtually knew they were safe after the B team games on the first day when they were 9-9 with Essex – thanks to a 4-2 win for the women, their first of the season, and a 7-5 defeat for the men – and Glamorgan were thumping Oxfordshire 14-4.
