Britain's Robbie Green has become the first darts player to test positive for a banned substance after a doping control found traces of marijuana in his system.

32-year-old Green, nicknamed 'Kong', tested positive for the recreational drug after giving a sample at the UK Open in Bolton in June.

He has been suspended for eight weeks and two days by the Darts Regulation Authority.

He was only the eighth player to be tested since darts introduced drug-testing earlier this year.

GDA – 1st RANKING (Millennium Singles): Winner- Dylan Duo

"The 1st singles ranking event scheduled this season saw a record attendance for the best part of 4 seasons. This was due to a decision made by the committee to raise subscriptions and make the rankings FREE to enter for all registered members (over 18’s). This did prove to be the right choice. With the record attendance for many years, including over 33% of registered members participating, it was another eventful night.

In-form Monnaie darts opponents for big win

WILL Donald Monnaie dislodge James Morel as male player of the year? It remains to be seen. But what is certain is that the former Seychelles striker, who once scored a beauty of a goal with a bicycle kick against Mauritius at Stad Popiler, has been accumulating points since the start of the season.

MONNAIE ... second singles title win this year

A member of the Diffusers team, Monnaie’s recent triumph was in last Saturday’s first edition of the Shreeji Singles Tournament played at the Cascade community centre.

The 47-year-old, who is actually going through a purple patch, was once again in devastating form and threw the darts well to hit the big points to beat Paul Dugasse 4-0 in the best-of-seven 501 final to pocket R1,500.

Cut price parking, a free drink, free tea coffee and some soft drinks combined with excellent food and plenty of it.
All this plus luxurious surroundings and £350 sponsorship. I feel sorry for the players who stayed away.
Slight downside perhaps the cost of shorts. V.J. nearly had a heart attack when ordering his usual tipple, a double Bacardi and coke. He never recovered from the shock, lost his next game and was found wandering the streets of Bradford in the early hours muttering six pounds, six pounds.

No wonder why everyone thinks dart players are a bunch of drunks...

No wonder why everyone thinks dart players are a bunch of drunks...

"At a TV recording the other day I bumped into Sid Waddell, the darts commentator, who turned out to be an exceptionally nice bloke, with a dry wit you don't always associate with his chosen sport. I asked if it was true that darts players were permanently drunk, and he said that it was, literally, often the case that the only people at the match who weren't drunk were the commentators.

The players cannot do their job without several pints inside them. If they were stone cold sober, their hands would probably be shaking too much to throw. He mentioned one player who drank 23 bottles of Heineken before playing a match for £100,000, and another - very famous - player who began a match so drunk that when his opponent held out his hand in greeting he missed it altogether and fell flat on the floor.

Sid is generally described as 'excitable' for his commentaries on Sky Sports, and he certainly uses the language to vigorous effect. 'Jockey Wilson, ah what an athlete!' he once said. Or his admiring: 'That was like throwing three pickled onions into a thimble!' And 'it's like trying to pin down a kangaroo on a trampoline'. Or 'under that heart of stone beat muscles of pure flint' and, of a losing player, 'he looks about as happy as a penguin in a microwave'. My favourite is his description of a very close match: 'The atmosphere is so tense, if Elvis walked in with a portion of chips, you could hear the vinegar sizzle on them.' Well, you see what he means.

John Lowe - "Is it a young mans sport?"

Is it a young mans sport?

Is it a young mans sport? why do I ask? I ask the question that many people are asking me and I prefer to reverse it back onto you the general playing and spectating participants of the sport.

Only a few years ago such a question would not have arisen, the average age of top class TV players was in the late 30's, i made a comment only a few months ago regarding the World Series of darts in america, the average age of the contestants was over 40.

So why all of a sudden is the question being asked, I am sure it is down to the success of Jelle klaasen who at 20 years of age won the 2005 BDO World Championship at Lakeside, then along came the new Dutch Wonder Kid: Michael Van Gerwen who rewrote the record books by becoming the youngest World Master winner at the age of 17, those two fine young players have now been joined by the youngest ever qualifier of the PDC World Champioship, Australian: Mitchell Clegg, who is just 16.

PETER MANLEY was dumped out of the World Darts Championship last night by Dutch qualifier Josephus Schenk.

The No 3 seed — two-time runner-up at Purfleet’s Circus Tavern — lost 4-2 in their third-round clash.

He was under the cosh from the start when his opponent took the first set with a superb 11-dart leg.

Carlisle-based Manley, 42, went 2-0 down before levelling the match.

But Schenk, 24, refused to buckle and got on top to set up a fourth round tie with Steve Beaton or Andrew Hamilton.

Agason CCL were on Sunday crowned 2006 Carlsberg darts champions after they collected 15 points during the final of the national tournament at Country Club Limbe on Saturday and Sunday.
Agason, who utilised home ground advantage, were clear favourites as they went on to top the table from the first to seventh round.
Runners-up Cobbe Stingers with 13 points had themselves to blame for letting the championship slip through their fingers.
They had a convincing start as they beat Tedzani and Agason, but complacency cost them dearly when they were beaten 4-8 by defending champions Mafco and drew 6-6 with North End Motors.

New league catching on

DEERFIELD - The 12 North Sports Bar is cultivating a subculture of dart-throwers.
Of course, the members of its darts league may share pitchers of beer and scarf down hot wings before competing in the shadow of the 12-foot projection screen playing the Monday Night Football game, but they're serious about their sport.

'Just like anything else, it takes a lot of practice,' Steve Pfleuger said. 'I have boards at home, in my garage, and we play about four nights a week.'

Pfleuger and teammate Wayne Bloss have both competed professionally and are thus far undefeated in the 12 North Darts League. Although a man holding a beer in the background promises that's about to change.

'They can't touch us,' Pfleuger assured.

The 12 North Darts League, in its inaugural year, is part of bar co-owner Ray Romanus' idea of building a 'real' sports bar where patrons can play as well as watch sports.

'Darts is a sport, why not?' Romanus said. 'We're a true sports bar.'

Dan Bowman, who has run darts leagues in the area for 25 years, organized 12 North league. He also competes.

Priestley and Manley

Howdy all,
What an exhibition we had the other night in Hourigans, Newmarket in Co.Cork.
A huge attendance enjoyed some brilliant darts from Peter Manley and Dennis Priestley with Phil Jones providing the scores and the jokes between legs. As I say the attendance was huge and the capacity crowd didn't stop shouting all night and I think even the players were taken a back by the atmosphere. Thanks to Dennis and Peter and also Phil for providing a great night. Thanks to large Con who chalked all night. Thanks to Scanlons pub who provided us with plenty of beer all day Saturday. A big thank you to Colin who had the venue in tip top shape and mostly thanks to Pat O Loughlin who was the man backing the whole night and only rang me last night looking for a Barney/Taylor showdown in 2007 so watch this space for that one.

"Nixon puts friendship aside in BDO World Championship quest

PHILL NIXON insists there will be no sentiment involved when he goes head to head with one of his closest friends in the first round of the BDO Darts World Championships early next year.

Nixon is due to face fellow England international and Cheshire County's Darryl Fitton when the competition opens on Sunday, January 7 at Lakeside.

The pair have met in various tournaments over the last 20 years but Nixon has the slight edge over the 2005 BDO semi-finalist and believes he can progress to the next stage at his friend's expense.

'I know most of the players and they know me but I'm pretty confident,' said the 50-year-old. 'I've beat Darryl more times than he's beaten me. But we've played each other that many times I'm not sure what the overall score is.

Published: 10 November, 2006

THE Town and County Club was the venue for Wick and District Darts League's annual league pairs and it attracted a good entry.

Eight pairs contested the ladies' competition and, in her first season in the Wick league, Sheona Campbell partnered Teresa Stubbings and won – but only just – against the unlucky Liz Ronaldson and Jean Mackenzie. Sheona hit a 68 finish on the bull.

In the first division there were 11 entries. John Scollay and Jock Geddes, Ali Mackay and George Sutherland and David Miller and Des Smith all suffered early exits, and it was the FSC '2' pairing of Ray Sinclair and Willie Smith that took the honours after a close final against Queen's duo Mark Thain and David Bain.

Meet Phil Taylor: darts superstar - www.smh.com.au

"It's not all beer and skittles at the sharp end of the darts world, writes Donald McRae in London.

'The baggage of celebrity,' Phil Taylor sighs, 'can be very heavy.' The world's greatest darts player sinks back into a plush leather chair at the Paddington Hilton and contemplates his surreal fate. 'You're a target for everybody. If you let it get to you, the world can suddenly seem a very wicked place. You have to harden yourself. I'm not as trusting now and that's a real shame because I'm a very open person. But when you get to a certain level you have to start growing up a little - just like Michael Jackson has got to do now.'

Taylor has an endearingly bizarre habit. He mentions the most famous and inappropriate celebrities while describing his own level of stardom. 'Expectations are enormous. You put a huge amount of pressure on yourself. And people phone up saying they've put money on you and it turns out that the whole street ... have a bet on you to win the world championship for an 11th time. Daft things like that creep up on you. I don't get an eighth of the attention of David Beckham, but it's still pretty heavy.'

Barry French write up!

Barry French is an active participant on several Darts Forums. He recently decided to take his dart game to the next level by entering the UK Open! Here's his write up of his experience in the event....

I did write a report on the Bedworth Cherry Tree forum and have copied it over here. It does make for long reading, but what the heck? laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I just want to say that Darren Johnson played well in the second round.....not how he did in his first round match, but well none the less. This 'Bus Driver' as has been put is a good player, certainly no mug and will do well at Bolton.

Here is the report for you all to read, hope you enjoy it biggrin.gif

After the longest train journey of my life ( 5 1/2 hours ) settled into our hotel nicely. We ( Ross Macken and I ) stayed in the Montgreenan Mansion hotel. Set up my Unicorn Dartmate stand and admired the acres surrounding the hotel before heading to the Magnum Leisure Centre.

After being ripped off by the taxi driver the first thing I see is Michael Barnard struggling to find his doubles against Martin Burchell. I'm walking around to find familiar faces to say hi to, and then see Bullshooter lose in a hard game against Roland Scholten. Nice to see that Rolands fit and well again after his scare with the slipped disc in Ireland. But apparently Kev had played well all day a couple of bad darts cost him dearly.

I managed to see a couple of people, but generally was watching the form of the players. Ady Lewis was stunning on the Saturday, and Dennis Priestley played awesome all weekend. In the last 16 against Barney (saturday) he won the match 3-2 but Barney lost the first set with a 37 average! The quality of the match was awesome. We went halfway through the final, with Mick McGowan sitting on 141 after 6 darts. As we headed off into our taxi, all you could hear was the low grumble of Bruce Spendleys voice saying 'FOOOOOOORTY'. Mick is in top form so to not hear a roar for a 9 darter was disappointing.

In any case, I was more concerned about practising at the hotel, to prepare for Sundays UK Open Qualifier........

Panic struck me during practise with Ross (my room mate and practise partner), and my mate Kelvin Hirst, who lives in Warrington. I couldn't grip my darts at all - I've had 4 sets of darts made to my specification - and was worried that the Sunday would be awful.

Arrived on the Sunday, spoke to Bullshooter, Michael Barnard, Pete Allen and a couple of others before practising. Within the space of an hour, I'd found a zone where I hit 6 180's, and several tons/140's etc. I thought to myself 'Andy is gonna get it today!'. Laugh you may, but I was confident.

3rd game on board twelve - the site of one of my greatest lifetime achievements happened. Myself against Andy Jenkins....... ( this is the bit I hate talking about - myself laugh.gif )

I knew that the most important dart of the game was the bull to throw first. I won the bull anyway so was quietly happy that I could at least get 1 leg. Jenks wasn't at his ultimate best, and I was nervous as could be expected. But I hit key shots when needed in all the legs. No 180's hit, but I missed D18 for a 108 checkout. I ended up winning 5-4 after being 4-2 down.

I swear when that double went in I couldn't speak at all!!!!! This sounds pathetic to a lot of you here, but I've only been playing 8 months. To beat someone of Andy's stature after a short time proves I have the bottle at least. Maybe my consistancy isn't there yet however I shown that I have the bottle to play and take chances when given to me. To get my back patted and hear so many well dones is unheard of for me - and Bullshooter will tell you, I couldn't stop smiling. The only other time I've enjoyed myself so much in darts was playing Bobby George. But this surpassed that feeling by a country mile. John Part heard about the result and shook my hand ( and had a smile like a cheshire cat biggrin.gif ) because he knows of my endeavours and told me to forget about playing Andy, just think about winning instead.

Anyway, as you all probably know I got beaten by Darren Johnson next round 5-0. I have to be honest and say my standard was not high enough to even compete. You all may not know of Darren as a household name, but he is capable of upsets, as Roland Scholten can attest to. He's a good floor player, finishes well and scores steadily.

I was a little disappointed with myself to be honest. But I was mentally fatigued after my first game. To come down from 4-2 to win 5-4 against Andy was hard work, and to stay positive had taken a lot of energy out of me. I'm used to playing 2 legs of darts most nights in pubs. The tuesday singles league guarantees you 3 legs per match twice a night - so playing best of 9 is hard for me at the moment. So to play a gruelling match, then play another one was too much for me too soon (some would say!). But credit to Darren he played very very well, and had kind words for me after the game.

Let's forget about me and get back to the rest of the darting fraternity for a little bit.....

Darren Johnson went on to win our board, beating Paul Williams to qualify for Bolton. But the game I wanted to watch was Bob Anderson v John Part. I had to mark while they played, but it was painful for me to hear the scores and the good shots scored, because Bob and John have both been kind to me in person, and they are both darting legends in my eyes.

I tried to keep an eye on all the boards to see if any shocks occured, however I didn't see many. A couple of things shocked me throughout the day though however:-

1) Being told that Wayne Mardle had not picking up a dart AT ALL before his game against Peter Manley. And he wonders why he's off form at the moment? GET ON THE PRACTISE BOARD AND FULFIL THE TALENT YOU HAVE MATE!

2) The lack of presence shown by the BDO players. Gary Anderson - the world no2 according to the BDO was battered by Kevin Painter. Painter is not playing his absolute best, yet he trounced one of the best that the BDO has to offer. Not a good showing for them yesterday. Though I do have to say that Vincent Van Der Voort played very well throughout, and I hope to see him enter a few more events now he has enough to qualify for Bolton.

3) The fact that the drinks and food were so cheap!!!!! ( Must explain why Jamie Harvey was more drunk than he was in Newport laugh.gif )

In all seriousness, I had the greatest weekend of my life. One result doesn't create a champion, One tournament win doesn't create a champion, however determination, positive attitude and commitment can enable you to reach your goals a little easier. My win over Andy has increased these attributes twentyfold. It will make me practise harder than ever as I want victory more (don't we all lol!) but will give me more confidence also.

Who'd imagine it - 8 months ago throwing your first dart to beating the World Ranked no 10? I will do my best to make my money stretch as far as possible to go to every PDC event next year (that includes Gibraltar, Holland x4, Ireland x3, Belgium, Las Vegas and Chicago)

On the back of this, 3 different parties are interested in sponsoring me. One of them may put me in the PDC early enough to have a crack at the World Championship Qualifiers ( despite having to renew in january anyway )

Sorry for long report. I still don't know how I feel inside other than happy. I'll enjoy this next couple of days, then when my liver recovers from the celebratory drink (or ten!) then I'll be back on the practise board!

Thanks for reading,
Baz

Oxygen Games Launch Event for PDC World Championship Darts

Oxygen Games Launch Event for PDC World Championship Darts

Oxygen Games is pleased to report the resounding success of its launch event for PDC World Championship Darts on the evening of Thursday 9th November

The star studded event included celebrity guests Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and Colin ‘Jaws’ Lloyd, as well as the Voices of Darts, Sid Waddell and Russ Bray. Taylor and Lloyd were true to form and allowed the press a glimpse of their approachable and friendly, although competitive natures. They respectfully kicked the proverbial back-sides of all of the attending press and retail guests (whom Oxygen are certain took the beatings well), fulfilled some childhood ambitions, and by all accounts, celebs, press and retail had a thoroughly good time to boot.

Russ Bray was kind enough to be the night’s MC and scorer, and he dazzled the crowds with his dulcet tones and charming turn of phrase! Sid Waddell was on hand during matches with his legendary commentary style, which brought a smile to the face of even the most focused players.

With a Press challenge running throughout the course of the evening to take on the pros at both their game and Oxygen’s, the publisher feels that the evening gave all involved a wonderful insight into the world of darts, and managed to truly capture the essence of the addictive, energy-fuelled Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

“It’s a great game and I can’t wait until it’s released,” said Taylor, the 13-time World Champion. “I had a good play and really got into it.

“It’s very realistic and fun to play. I’ve won many titles during my career, and with this game hopefully I can win many more before I retire!”

Running alongside PDC World Championship Darts, the publisher was also showcasing a number of its other current releases. The critically acclaimed, ProStroke Golf was premièred for the PSP® (Playstation®Portable) system, having been recently praised by Official PSP Magazine:

"As a golf sim, it's fantastic, and when it comes to the technical aspects, it leaves Tiger slamming wedges of turf from the rough."

In addition, Oxygen exhibited its two dance mat titles, which are out for Christmas. Street Dance and Dance Fest both offer up a choice of musical tastes that will appeal to any dance mat fans. Featuring two beautiful and appropriately dressed dancers – one urban diva and one pop princess – the games went down a storm, especially as the drinks flowed and both press and retail alike found their dancing shoes (claim supported by photographic evidence)!

Oxygen would like to take this opportunity to thank Phil, Colin, Sid, Russ and the PDC for their company and invaluable help with recreating that vital darts atmosphere, and for all of their help and support in bringing the game to market. A special thanks to all of the press and retailers who attended the event and ensured a great time was had by all.

Interview, promotional and live-action materials from the event are available from Image Wizard and Johnny Atom.

Getting a cuppa in the morning and I reached into the fridge to get sugar… not a good start to the day indeed. After I finally worked out that the sugar wasn’t a frozen sweetener I sat down and had my coffee while trying to work out what sort of blog entry I would put in going on what information I had on me (non) and the guidelines Edward had provided.

Barney Rubbishes Media Claims

Time to lay off the gossip folks!

"Barney Rubbishes Media Claims

RAYMOND van Barneveld has poured scorn on Dutch tabloid stories incorrectly reporting that he has split up from wife Sylvia.

The four-time World Champion was distressed to read recent stories in some newspapers in his homeland stating that he had left his wife and family home.

"These stories are complete rubbish and I don't know why the newpapers are printing them," van Barneveld said.

"They are just looking for some hot news to sell more copies and they have had to make something up.

"It's very sad for me and Sylvia to have to read and listen to these stories when we are as much in love as ever and very happy together."

The couple will jet off to Thailand for a short holiday before van Barneveld returns to Holland to prepare for his debut appearance in the PDC's Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship at Purfleet this Christmas.

"Dublin has been a good week for me up till Wednesday night! That is.

I had played well on the Saturday and Sunday and was looking forward to the World Grand Prix.

Monday daytime – Had the Dartmate set up at the hotel (we stayed at the Ibis Fri,Sat, Sun and Monday nights) and I got around an hours practice – we then enjoyed a meal nearby and then headed off to the Citywest Hotel and met up with my sponsors, Russ and Ian (Pat and Wayne).

I went into the players lounge around 3pm and had another hour on the board and then chilled out completely until my 6pm start.

But adopted Cumbrian Alan Warriner-Little is determined that at 44 he can still make a major impact on the darts world.

“I think Dennis Preistley is 59 now but he’s playing fantastic,” said Alan. “He’s gone from 28 in the rankings to two or three.

“For this game you need to be more mentally fit more than anything else. It’s all down to the will to win.”

"IT'S PREMIERE LEAGUE FOR DENNIS

DENNIS Priestley with the help of some great recent results has earned him a spot in next year's Holsten Premier League Darts, which starts in February.

Priestley secured his place in the prestigious tournament, which will consist of the world's top eight ranked players, after reaching the semi-final of the SkyBet Grand Prix in Dublin where he lost to old nemesis Phil 'The Power' Taylor, 6-3.

Priestley travels to Scotland for the Budweiser UK Open Scottish regional final on Sunday before taking part in the PDPA Players Championship in Holland next weekend and is in excellent form - form he showed in his defeat to the eventual winner, Taylor.
Said Priestley: 'I wouldn't say I was unlucky not to beat Phil but I had my chance to make it four apiece. I could feel myself fading in the game because the heat was really bad.

Unicorn - uniBlog: Sid Waddell

"It was more like being at a steeplechase at Leopardstown than a tungsten race at Saggart. To see as hot a favourite as Phil Taylor running and jumping like a selling plater and almost belly-flopping over the line in the World Grand Prix final, had even me gobsmacked. And the fact that the challenger Terry Jenkins, a solid lad in technique and temperament, got 2-0 up in sets on the Power was even more remarkable.

I reckon a little forensic noseying is called for. In theory Phil should have hit the Dublin field with all guns blazing. In Utrecht in the Bavaria World Trophy he demolished Ronnie Baxter 6-0 in sets with a 106.8 average. Then he blitzed Martin Adams 7-2 in the final. So why was the Power so tentative in his first round match against Wes Newton? Answer: in two words Callaby and Painter. Both put Phil out of the Grand Prix in round one. So even the great one has nerves at times… Unicorn - Links: "

"Bulls Eye - the Movie -- “After losing his father in a freak accident, dart throwing phenomenon Billy ‘Bullseye’ Jefferson vows never to compete again....
# 276 11-06-2006

“Last year, more people were killed by auto accidents, heat stroke, lung cancer and natural causes combined than by any one tomato.”

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, 1978

No, this column is not about the cult classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, possibly the worst flick ever made. It’s just that produced as it was on a shoestring budget with a cast of amateurs spouting non-sequiters throughout a half-baked plot, it came to mind as I as screened Squawking Parrot Productions’ movie Bulls Eye. But don’t get me wrong – I mean this as a compliment.

I love stupid movies. I’ve watched Attack of the Killer Tomatoes dozens of times and Reefer Madness too (although I can’t remember much of it). I assure you that if either were airing late tonight I wouldn’t hesitate to reserve a six-pack, a pizza and a spot the couch to let my mind turn to mush one more time.
