#darts - BDO rejects PDC £2million offer
Sunday, January 31, 2010
Following a meeting of the county directors, the British Darts Organisation (BDO) has today formally rejected the £2million offer from Barry Hearn's Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) to take control of the game. Responding to the news, a particularly chirpy Hearn told ITV4 that he was disappointed, but that at least he'd saved a couple of million quid.

Greetings!
The plan would be ambitions under any circumstance. Most would call it impossible, even absurd.
Not so in The People s Republic of China.
The Chinese have an old proverb: Si ma dang huo ma yi. (Try to save the dead horse as if it is still alive.) Do the impossible is what it means.
And that s exactly what they are doing.

For those planning to stay in Long Beach for the weekend, there are dozens of hotels/motels in the vicinity. It is a busy weekend in Long Beach so don't leave it to the last minute to book a room. It can always be cancelled closer to the time if your plans change. You can also go to www.visitlongbeach.com or, do as I often do and go to www.hotwire.com and check out what they come up with.
The Queen Mary gets booked up early and is quite expensive but it is certainly an experience if you get the chance to stay on board, ghosts and all.
Anyone having trouble finding accommodation just let me know and I will make some calls for you.
We will again have a steel tip blind draw at The Dolphin Lounge in Anaheim on the Friday evening (13th). It will be a guaranteed payout of $400.00 and $10.00 entry. There will also be a guaranteed payout soft-tip shoot on the Saturday Night the 14th at The Dolphin Lounge, $10 entry $500.00 payback.

Look forward to seeing you all once again,

Try and support this event if you can, we don't get too many steel-tip tournaments on the west coast and we need to support those that we have so as not to lose them.

from the email stack... Della Fleetwood Memorial
There are special people in this world and then there are really special people. Della Fleetwood was one of the latter. She left us far too soon, passing away suddenly on Jan. 6 at age 66.
There also aren’t too many people who meant more to the sport of darts. Della quit her teaching job to devote her time to darts with Tom. She was there when the Southern California Darts Association began in the late 1960s. She was there to launch the American Darts Organization in the early ‘70s and she was there to help the World Darts Federation get off the ground in the mid-‘70s. She conducted so many tournaments in her lifetime that it would take a roomful of people to equal her effort.
She stuck with it through good times and bad times. She stuck with it when it grew and when it didn’t. She stuck with it when it was a global community of friends—and when it wasn’t--and she always did it with a smile. People were drawn to Della like a magnet. And she never forgot a face. Those of us who worked closely with her saw that time and again. A dart player would approach the stage at the North American Open in the midst of an event with more than 600 entries and Della would be able to call that person by name, ask about his/her family and recall the last time that player had come to the tournament. For years, I tried to match that skill, but couldn’t even come close.
After Tom passed away in 2004, she stuck with the WDF, taking over for him as treasurer and tackling it with the same attention to detail she brought to every task. She also continued their work on behalf of children and families with the Exchange Club in Downey where they lived. She cared passionately for the sport and its people and continued the Las Vegas Open under Triple Crown Productions in Tom’s memory. The remaining Triple Crown crew members had that in mind when they went on with this year’s event just three weeks after her death. They knew she’d want that.
Della made people feel welcome and included no matter where they were, no matter when. She so dearly loved her family and Tom’s family and their Exchange family that eventually they all melded into just Tom and Della’s family. I met her in 1972 when I was a newbie tournament committee member in Cleveland. She made it a point to come by and commend us on the job we were doing. And in a strange turn of events (especially for those who don’t know that Della once was a good player) we both ended up in the semi-finals of the ladies’ singles that year. We were friends from that year forward.
We counted on her for everything—phone numbers, addresses, a shoulder when we were down, an ear when we needed advice. She was simply one of those people who loved life and everything in it. I was proud to call her my friend and can’t even comprehend all the ways she will be missed.
If Della was here right now, she likely would tell us she’ll be fine and that we shouldn’t worry about her, but instead we should move on and do the ‘right thing’ for the sport and its people. It was always so like her to put everyone else first.
Somewhere up there in darters’ heaven, she and Tom and a host of dart friends we’ve lost over the years will be watching to see what will happen next. Without Tom and Della Fleetwood, there may never have been a national darts organization in the U.S.A. She leaves a legacy of high standards and expectations to the rest of us here on earth. I hope we can all make her proud.
Sandi Cain, past president, American Darts Organization.

Andrew Stanevicius, a fellow darter, developed a iPhone App to use for Steel Tip 01 outs. He used my (Charles Bradish) outchart in the App calculations, to give the user outshot selections. If you look up any outshot, the preferred outshot method is listed first, along with an alternate shot if you must hit the out or need to play it safe. There are also listed other possible combinations, if you do not wish to go that particular route. I suggest that you look at Andrew’s explanation on the website for a bit more information.
Please check out the App if you have an iPhone. You can locate it on the Apple App Store, by searching for X01OutChart, or go to Andrew’s location at http://sites.google.com/site/asisapplications/home/x01outchart . If you have an iPhone or iTouch, you can use this promotional code to download the App: NLW7KP9NPTPM. Please leave feedback on the App for Andrew.

from the email stack... To our fellow old-time dart players:
We’ve been dropping like flies lately and if somebody doesn’t have an old timers’ reunion soon it seems like there will only be half a dozen people left that qualify for one. One of the most common comments overheard at funerals of past dart players recently is “Gee, it seems like the only time we see each other anymore is at some one’s funeral.” On Jan. 7, we lost Della Fleetwood—one of the people who hoped to organize a reunion but just didn’t get to it. The Las Vegas Open will go on Jan. 29-31 --- but that still leaves a darters reunion undone.
So, let’s start thinking about it. I’m suggesting a couple of potential reunion dates for old timers dart league members and tournament players from the last century. May 1st or May 22nd, 2010. (Short-timers from the new millennium are NOT invited unless they are the spouse, child or grandchild of a qualified old-timer).Old timer refers to an era, not a person’s age.
Seems we first need to figure out how many are interested. If only 30 people would show up, 1 very large garage or average size home would do. If 300 people responded positively to such a reunion, 1 large trophy house or small mansion would be needed. Other possibilities could be a Moose or Elks Lodge, a union hall or private club with its own liquor license or a large dart friendly bar. Location should be in central L.A. basin or northern/central Orange County.
Photo I.D.’s are not required, but an old dart related picture showing you with hair, or before it turned gray would be amusing to see. Also, all old dart shirts that are wearable would be considered appropriate.
Please forward this to anybody and everybody who might be interested in attending and/or hosting. These people can reply to Dusie at dusie32"at"gmail.com by mid-February and I’ll happily supply all those names/emails/phone numbers to whoever wants to organize it or host it! My house doesn’t qualify either by size or location as party central.

Mark McGwire has admitted taking steroids
"I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize," McGwire said in his statement. "I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 off season and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again. I used them on occasion throughout the nineties, including during the 1998 season. I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.

'DAVE CHISNALL CAN GIVE PHIL TAYLOR A RUN FOR HIS MONEY'
9th January 2010
By Richard Lewis
DARTS legend Bobby George believes Dave Chisnall could become the sport’s new superstar – and give Phil Taylor a run for his money.
Chisnall, 29, meets BDO world No.1 Tony O’Shea in the semi-finals of the Lakeside Championships this afternoon after a stunning fightback to knock out defending champion Ted Hankey.
BBC commentator and double world runner-up George tipped ‘Chizzy’ to go all the way before the start of the tournament.
And Chisnall produced some amazing darts to snatch a shock 5-4 win, despite trailing 4-1 against ‘The Count’.
George said: “If he could start a match like he finished against Ted, then no-one can beat him.
“He could even beat Phil Taylor. He has the bottle, he doesn’t care.
“People ask me all the time about Phil Taylor and I say he is a once in a lifetime player, it’s just a shame he came along in my lifetime.
“But Dave could be the second. He was averaging 121 against Ted. That’s 11 and 12-dart finishes in every leg of 501.”
Taylor won the first of his 15 world titles at Lakeside in 1990 as a BDO player, when he was also 29, and he has since gone on to dominate the sport.
The Power is now the dominating force of the PDC show and Chisnall could be one of those to join their ranks in the future.
Chisnall, who is making only his second appearance at the World Championships, won last year’s BDO British Open and George said: “Three weeks ago I said I fancied him as a dark horse.
“People laughed at me when they saw the draw come out but they are not laughing now.”
It has not been a good week for Hankey, though.
Along with losing at Lakeside, he has also been fined £250 by the Darts Regulation Authority for swearing on camera while on stage at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

Della is known to most of you as the person who is calling the matches at the Las Vegas Open in recent years after taking over from her husband Tom who passed away in 2001.
Della will be greatly missed in the darting community for her continued support of darts and her strong commitment to making the Vegas Open what it was.
It was announced today that the committee for the Vegas Open will still carry out the Vegas Open for this year as that is how she would have like it. But any future Vegas Opens may be up in the air.

The married man in his 40s had been drinking into the early hours with pals after the televised matches finished and decided to walk back to his hotel after being advised not to drive.
It is believed he lost his bearings in the freezing conditions and wandered on to the lake not realising it was iced over and covered in snow and fell through after 20 yards.
His wife woke in the morning at the world famous country club in Frimley Green, Surrey, and when she realised he had not returned raised the alarm and the grounds were searched.
Tragic
The man was spotted under the ice close to the bank and fire crews and police raced to the scene and recovered the body and paramedics tried to revive him on the way to hospital.
However waiting doctors pronounced the tragic darts fan dead.
It is understood the husband regularly visited the World Darts Championships which are currently being televised on BBC with a group of pub pals and their wives.
His body was found in the frozen ornamental lake nine hours after he was last seen alive at 2am walking back.
A Lakeside Country Club source said: "The lake is only about 20 yards away from the door and he must have walked out and straight on to the lake thinking that he was walking on land.
"He walked in an arc shape judging by the footprints and was nearly back on dry land when he went through. The ice must have given away and in those temperatures you won't survive long.
"It must have been about -8C to -10C last night and drink had been taken and tragically he could not get out."
Fire Brigade Watch Manager Karl Bowen said he was told the victim had been drinking while watching the darts.
He said: "Apparently he had been told not to drive his car which was parked and had then gone to walk it instead and the last time that anyone recalls seeing him alive was at about 2am.
"The body was so close to the side of the lake that police had already pulled him out - all we could do was help put him on a stretcher and get him into an ambulance for him to be worked on.
"The man had taken a walk and may have not known there is a lake there because it was frozen and covered in snow.
"It is about 20 yards from the back of the venue where the darts are held."
The victim, who has not yet been named, was rushed to Frimley Park Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Lakeside Professional World Darts Championships spokesman Robert Holmes confirmed the man was a fan enjoying the world famous tournament and added: "It is tragic and the weather played a big part.
"He was a darts fan but that's all I know - I have no details of name age or anything."
The man had been watching the televised second round matches — four of which were played yesterday evening.
During the evening, Martin Phillips beat Paul Carter 4-2, Martin Adams beat Daryl Gurney 4-1, Garry Thompson beat Martin McCloskey 4-1 and Scott Waites beat John Henderson 4-1.
A spokesman for Surrey Police said an investigation into the tragedy was under way.
He added: "Surrey Police can confirm that the body of a man has been recovered from the lake at Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green after we were alerted to the discovery at about 10.45am Thursday."
