"Matchplay for Fleetwood darts ace
FLEETWOOD darts ace Wes Newton is looking to put three years of hurt behind him when he makes his debut in the Stan James World Matchplay at Blackpool's Winter Gardens on Sunday.
The 28-year-old never managed to qualify for the event after joining the Professional Darts Corporation circuit and was so disappointed that he couldn't bring himself to attend as a spectator.
But Newton's rise to 21st in the world rankings has earned him an automatic place in this year's £150,000 tournament and a first-round match in front of his home crowd against John Part on the opening evening.
Newton said: 'I've been going to the Winter Gardens since the tournament began but I've not been for the past few years because it hurt too much to watch and not be involved.'"
