Dartoids World: # 269 08/01/2006
# 269 08/01/2006
I don’t know ‘bout ya’ll but when I think of the Ozarks what pops into my noggin is hooters, and I done don’t mean that place with the chicken wings. No siree, Bob.
What I mean is Hooterville. Don’t nobody know fer shore where that is ‘xactly ‘cept “it’s sumpin’ like 300 miles from Chicago, ‘round ‘bout Crabwell Corners, Stankwell Falls and Bugtussle.” But everybody knows how the town got its name. There’s lots of evidence.
Back in the ‘60s lots of well endowed wimmenfolk lived near these parts. Must be sumpin’ in the squirrel soup. Fer example, Elly May Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies growed up in the holler here. So did Billy Jo, Bobbie Jo and Betty Jo from Petticoat Junction. Even the diamond-clad Lisa from Green Acres settled here fer a spell.
Prob’ly Hooterville is near where I’ve just been, ‘least that would be my guess, judgin’ from the current evidence. That would be Tessa Marshall and Heather Hunt and iffen you don’t get what I’m talkin’ ‘bout you best be a-fixing to get your tail to next year’s Chuck and Sticks’ Chicken COOP Open. It’s a mighty fine shindig. "
Blackpool Today: Darts - I'll be back for title No 9 says Taylor...
MISSION accomplished – but it's not over yet!
That was the proud boast of Phil Taylor, who captured his eighth Stan James World Matchplay darts title at Blackpool's Winter Gardens.
He survived an unexpected scare to come back to beat the hitherto unheralded James Wade by 18-11 after falling behind early 8-5 thus picking up the prize for the eighth time.
Taylor said: 'At the beginning of the year, I made it my goal to win the Blackpool tournament again, and I am delighted to have done it.'
And Taylor, ever the perfectionist, stated his avowed intention to come back next year and repeat the feat, though he knows it won't be easy as the standard is getting better all the time in the sport.
'James is a cracking player, so is Andy Hamilton, while Dennis Priestley is also on his way back.
'Darts is massive and getting bigger and I don't even look at the first round draws when they come out anymore because every match, even in round one, is like a final.'"

I will get started reassessing if you will take another look at the sport of darts and some of it's participants. It's easy to walk into a bar and see some guys having a beer throwing darts at a board and think; "Why would anyone want to watch that on TV?" I would suggest that you take a look at an article written by WSoD qualifier Dave DePriest titled: "Why Televise Darts?" http://www.davedepriest.com/world_series_of_darts.htm
It seems that many articles that I noticed have taken a negative view of the sport and having it broadcast. However I would like to pose the question; Is it a bad thing to televise some of the most accomplished individuals in the world displaying their skills at an internationally recognized sport?

Bull's Eye News- Feature: Captain Fred's Dart Chart
By Captain Fred Everson
When I was in high school, I remember hating football practice. Would that Keyport High had a dart team. For me, practicing my dart game is therapy. It takes my mind off bothersome stuff and allows me to relax with something I really enjoy – throwing darts. On the days when I hit well, it is pure bliss, but even when I don't play well against myself, it is still a wonderful distraction from life's little pains.
To practice with purpose, I made up a little routine described in a previous issue of Bull's-Eye News. I have since developed a chart that helps keep track of how I throw. In brief, here's how it works.
To use this chart, you need a practice round with a numerical value. You can make up one of your own, or you can use mine. Here's how my routine works. I throw three darts each at 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, and the bull for a warm up. Then I repeat the round for score, counting hits on each number, with a triple counting three hits, a double counting two, and a single one. I don't count any slop in my practice round and I keep a running tally in my head, and then log the total on my chart. After five days, a chart might look like the one illustrated below."
This sounds a lot like Cricket Count Up:

So where is all the positive press on darts on ESPN?
Are you kidding?
I think ESPN needs a reality check. I’m begging you people to stop watching darts, and poker, and dominos, and trick shot billiards, and paint ball, and polo, and the great outdoor games (unless we’ve got two guys fighting with chain saws), and the hot dog eating contest.
Please, every time one of you people can’t reach the remote to watch the news or the learning channel or even the weather channel, ESPN comes up with another inactive piece of crap to dull our minds.

BBC SPORT: Priestley sets up Taylor showdown
Taylor beat Priestley in last year's World Matchplay
Former world champion Dennis Priestley beat Alex Roy 13-8 to set up a showdown with Phil Taylor in the World Matchplay quarter-finals in Blackpool.
The 56-year-old edged 3-2 ahead at the first break and took a six-leg lead but missed several doubles for victory as Roy cut his deficit to four.
Priestley eventually nailed double 10 to clinch his victory."

Phil Taylor made short work of John Part in the second round of the Stan James World Matchplay on Tuesday.
The 13-time world champion lost to Canadian Part in the quarter-finals of this event last year but got his revenge with an emphatic 13-2 victory.
Taylor also registered the highest checkout of the tournament so far when he took out 160 in the seventh leg."
In the previous game Andy Hamilton claimed another major scalp with a win....
Hamilton overcame Dutch superstar Van Barneveld in the qualifying competition before crushing Peter Manley 10-2 in the opening round at the Winter Gardens.
And he was too strong for Lewis in a pulsating contest played in humid conditions, closing out a 15-13 success to clinch his place in the last eight."

Whether a sport or just a game, dart throwing has gained enough popularity in the Tall City to develop regionally competitive players and a July 28-30 tournament with teams from Lubbock, San Angelo, Abilene and Midland.
It has its own parlance with 'putting him out,' 'flights,' 'the oche,' 'a leg,' 'doubling out' and 'Ton 80' being key terms.
The Permian Basin Dart Association 'Dust Bowl' event will match 12 men and six women from each city in complex '501' and 'Cricket' games on 21 boards at the new Midland Dart Center at Cactus Lanes Bowling Center."

Have you ever been sitting around in a bar or at home, playing darts, poker, foosball, or any other parlor game in general and thought 'gee, I should totally be on television playing this for money.' No. That's because most of us realize that these games should only be played among a group of friends, and the only money involved should be a bet against your friend that if you beat them, they need to do something, i.e. let you punch them and give you a dollar. At least in poker you are gambling, so money should be involved.
The only thing worse than these 'athletes' getting paid to play darts is their lung capacity. It seems like every player could be a stand-in for Louie Anderson, except if Louie Anderson had stupid facial hair. Come on, these guys actually make professional bowlers look like body-builders (thanks PJ). I’m not saying that these games don’t take talent, because they do, but they shouldn’t have professionally sanctioned events for money. At best the winner of a bar tournament should get a gift certificate to the bar at which they are playing darts so they can buy beer."

I actually played in the World Series of Darts. Unfortunately, most people in the US have very little concept of darts outside a pub game context. But to give you an idea of why ESPN would want to televise a tournament like this I'll give you some numbers.
According the National Sporting Good Association report year 2000. Darts was the 18th most popular sport in America with 17.4 million people playing on an annual basis. Darts was ranked higher in participation then, baseball, soccer, football, tennis, skiing, kickboxing, snowboarding, skating sports, and martial arts.

Maureen Shepherd, one of the best women darts players in the Caribbean over the last ten years, finally achieved the coveted title of Ladies Singles Champion at the Caribbean Cup.
Shepherd defeated her compatriot Michelle Stephens by two games to one at the Sherbourne Conference Centre last evening to take away the regional title sponsored by Digicel.
It looked as though Shepherd was going to overwhelm her opponent because in the first game of the three, Shepherd powered ahead with scores of 140 and then 100 to leave herself with ample time to check out without Stephens getting close to a finish. "

DENNIS PRIESTLEY overcame a stubborn challenge from Alan Tabern to move into round two of the Stan James World Matchplay with a 10-7 win.
The Yorkshireman cruised into a 7-2 lead against an opponent making his Blackpool debut.
But the rising star from St Helens hit back to win five of the next seven legs and put himself back to within touching distance before Priestley completed the win.
Priestley opened up an early 3-0 lead, punishing some sloppy play from Tabern in the second leg and taking the third despite a maximum from his opponent."

MOST RIDICULOUS PROGRAMS ON ESPN
The World Series of Poker has drawn a large following over the years. Unfortunately, the network has jumped the shark with these offerings. Hey, come to think of it, jumping a shark would be far more interesting than anything on this list:
5 Paintball championships. A fair amount of athleticism is required for this game, given it requires good hand-eye coordination. But this is something we want to play, not watch. Question: How do they clean the camera lens?
4 World Series of Darts. A bar game we'd only find interesting if we were sitting in the bar, with plenty of beer to drink.
3 Obstacle course challenge. Think Nickelodeon Double Dare challenge but without the green slime.
2 Dominoes tournament. Duller than dirt. Competitors take this game seriously, but I think ESPN's deal with the International Domino Federation through 2011 was a bit premature.
1 Hot dog eating contest. Not only must-not-see TV, but totally disgusting. We know Americans like to eat, but we don't need competitive eaters making SportsCenter's Top 10 highlights.

Said Priestley: 'I am throwing alright at the moment. It is all about being able to score doubles, score points and being to put both games together, if I can do that, then I am a game for anybody.
'I am aiming to get a bit higher in the rankings so we can have a Mexborough representative in the Premier League which is chosen after the Grand Prix has finished, so I am looking for a good performance there and also in Ireland (Ireland Open).'

Not everyone loves darts on TV
I did enjoy the broadcast today, because it's not often that you get to see that many USA dart players at once on TV, and some of the USA qualifiers were very impressive. I also thought that the commentator did a good job explaining the game during the broadcast.
There were some things that I didn't care for during the broadcast, but I wait for another day to deal with those. However it seems that not everyone agrees with me....
Poker, dominoes, darts: sad commentary on the TV sporting public:
By Tom Reed
Akron Beacon Journal
(MCT)
ESPN dedicated a two-hour block of programming Tuesday night to the World Series of Darts and World Series of Poker.
It begs one question: How long must viewers wait for the World Series of Twister?
Picture Stuart Scott twirling the spinner and breathlessly barking out: Left hand, red. Right foot, blue. Imagine Chris Berman calling the action: 'Look at Eugene Pennypacker, a daredevil of dexterity, as he reaches with both hands over his opponent and arches his back, back, back.'
At least with Twister someone would have the potential to pop a hamstring. You could watch hours of poker and darts and not see a competitor break as much as a sweat.
Poker. Darts. Dominoes. What has our sports nation allowed itself to become?"

Kuczynski can’t see why not.

Two down one to go! Martin Adams learns that a ‘treble’ of wolves can be a handful at feeding time!!
England Captain MARTIN ADAMS is enjoying living up to his ‘Wolfie’ nickname and love of wolves by helping to welcome three new cubs to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust (UKWCT).
The cute threesome are being cared for around the clock by volunteers from the Trust, who hand-feed them every four hours, and Martin was only too pleased to help out on a recent visit to the Berkshire based Conservation Trust at Butlers Farm, Beenham, Reading.
Not surprisingly, the latest arrivals at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust (UKWCT) are attracting a lot of attention, and Martin was only too pleased to assist with the feeding while once again continuing his close relationship with ‘Duma’, a mature wolf who he adopted some four years ago when he first visited the Trust Centre.
“During the 2002 Lakeside World Professional Darts
Championships I was invited to the UKWCT for the first time and actually filmed with the wolves for television”, says M
