Dartoids World - Federal Express Stole my Darts!

"Federal Express Stole my Darts!
# 275 11/01/2006

Some things make no sense. Take the price of gasoline in America.

Over the past year the price of a gallon of gasoline has spiked nearly a dollar to over three dollars a gallon. The reasons given: Chinese demand, Hurricane Katrina, the war in Iraq, the prospect of another war in Iran, some problem with a leaky pipeline in Alaska and because George Bush is a monkey butt. A month ago it cost me roughly the same amount to fill up the tank of my lawnmower as it did to fill up my car in high school.

Then suddenly, despite that fact that all of these so-called reasons for the increase still exist and some have worsened, the price of gasoline gradually dropped thirty percent to about two dollars a gallon. It’s a mystery I tell you.

Darts legend Phil Taylor believes there is still room for improvement despite claiming his seventh World Grand Prix title in Dublin last night.

'The Power' secured a hard-fought 7-4 victory over Terry Jenkins in the final of the Skybet-sponsored event - but he is already turning his attention to the Ladbrokes.com World Championship, which starts in December.

Taylor, who will be hoping to win his 14th world title at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, revealed: 'I'm going to practice a little bit different this time.

"PRIESTLEY READY TO FIGHT POWER

By Gavin Worley, PA Sport

Darts legend Dennis Priestley is relishing his semi-final showdown with defending champion Phil Taylor at the Skybet World Grand Prix in Dublin on Saturday night.

The 'Mexborough Menace' booked his place in the last four thanks to a 4-2 victory over rising star James Wade, while Taylor blitzed Dutchman Roland Scholten 4-0.

Taylor ended the Yorkshireman's title hopes at both the Las Vegas Desert Classic and the Stan James World Matchplay during the summer - but Priestley is ready to challenge the 13-time world champion again.

"I hope it will be a battle and I can find a little more form," said Priestley, who is guaranteed a place in next year's Holsten Premier League following a successful 2006.

Planet Darts: DENNIS PRIESTLEY 4-2 JAMES WADE

"DENNIS PRIESTLEY 4-2 JAMES WADE

DENNIS PRIESTLEY reached a second successive SkyBet World Grand Prix semi-final with a gritty 4-2 win over James Wade.

Priestley allowed a 3-1 lead to slip against Colin Lloyd in last year's semis, but will get the chance to avenge that on Saturday when he meets either Phil Taylor or Roland Scholten.

A sluggish start saw Priestley lose the opening set 3-1, with Wade beginning brightly with legs of 13, 14 and 15 darts.

The Yorkshireman battled through to take the second in a deciding leg, and then he stepped up a gear to race through the third 3-1 and move ahead.

Dennis PriestleyWade won the fourth without reply to level matters, but Priestley again responded, taking the fifth in a decider.

Bob Jones write up of the All State Open - Grand Rapids, MI

I would like to thank Bob Jones for this write up of the All State Open. Please read and enjoy.....

The AllState Open was heralded by everyone I spoke with in Grand Rapids, MI, as "one of the most fun tournaments of the year!"...and after attending my first one last weekend, I would have to agree!

The venue is well lit, the boards were great, and the tournament was run very efficiently, although I did get involved in a slight "miscue" that proved interesting. Friday night went off without a hitch, as I got recycled in the mixed triples event and ended up finishing top 8 with Tina and Pam (Pam's first ever tournament - great job, and thanks for holding me up, Tina! Smile ) The Weakest Link event was unique in that only 10 people shot in it at a time, and they ran a bunch of them, so you could really have a shot at winning that 50 bucks! I ended up after a bit of controversy shooting with Jamie Mawson in the blind draw, though we got knocked out in the first round - I had fun shooting with Jamie, thanks!

Saturday's Men's Doubles Cricket started off rough as we ran into Greg Hall and Brian who played well and knocked us out first round. Next event is Men's Singles 501, and I drew Darin Young first round. I suppose the next time I'll have a better chance of throwing halfway decently, as I experienced a bit of "shooting against the big boys" nerves...that was my first ever singles match against a top-ranked shooter. Darin was gracious as always, and I look forward to shooting against him in the future.

Next event for me was Men's Doubles 501, and my doubles partner Monty Jones and I finally put a few games together and ended up finishing Top 8 - I was extremely pleased! Good shooting, Monty! Singles cricket was interesting as I started out shooting the best game of my life, only to get waxed on the 15's and subsequently losing the next game to Shaun - that kid played great!

Mixed doubles produced my first ever ADO 180 shot, which eased the pain of getting knocked out in the first round. Jenny, my wife and mixed doubles partner, gave it a great shot and we had fun losing to Rob Wade and Heather - they were great sports!
All in all it was a great tournament and I hope to be able to attend next year's event!
Bob Jones Very Happy

Dartoids World - Baseball Players are Wussies!

"The most impressive, albeit obvious, statistic in years however, has got to be the one recently published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) dealing with the rough and tumble sport of darts. During the 42-month period beginning January 1, 1987 and ending June 30, 2000, just 30 darts-related injuries were recorded -- an average of a minuscule 1.4 injuries per month. Hence the inescapable conclusion: the sport of darts is safe. Duh.

Flashback - back in a league

I posted this a while back, but the conversation has come up again about Insurance Rates and Darts....

Over the past several years I have noted the decline of dart league membership in the Southern California area. I think what has impacted this area is the increased enforcement of the driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as onslaught of soft-tip darts.

While I was in a league in the San Diego area a major darts vendor became the area distributor of soft-tip dart machines. As part of the introductions of soft-tip darts the vendor promoted to the bar owners the increased revenue stream that could be had from the machines. The clincher was the sham argument that insurance rates would increase for establishments that had steel tip darts. They were told that as several large judgments had been won against "dart bars back east" and the insurance rates were sure to increase. Several bars that sponsored teams held out and had both soft-tip and steel, but the soft-tip promoters came in and organized tournaments, leagues, promotions with lots of prizes and cash. Most of the bar owners gave more time and space to soft-tips and put in more pool tables. Steel tip dart boards were squeezed out, by arcade style darts (anyone got a quarter?). Several bars held out and keep steel darts sponsored teams in the steel-tip dart leagues, had cash tournaments, and recruited new players. But over time they did not compete well with soft-tip darts, and the number steel-tip teams / players decreased.

When some of the sympathetic bar owners in my area sold their bars I found myself at minimum 35 min away from the nearest steel tip bar in any direction. I was out of league darts..... I had gone from playing 3 nights a week league, and 2 nights a week "blind draw doubles" to nothing but the occasional "weekend tourney". This by no means says that steel-tip darts in the area are dead, but I must say that league membership is down and fewer bars have dartboards / league teams.

It's good to be back in a league.....

Now for a few more words on the topic of insurance.....

There is a venue in our league that does not allow anyone but league members to play darts. We "check out the boards" for league events then turn them in at the end of the event. A few months I asked why this was the case and the manager said; "If we leave them up for the general public or rates will go up." I tried to have a logical discussion about issue, but got no further than; "We can't afford the higher rates." I knew that this was not the case, but I had no proof to prove my point.

On the way home (we carpool and have a designated driver) I ranted to my teammates about how stupid "Insurance rate excuse" was, and how could they accept such rubbish as truth! Someone, who must of been tired of my rant, said prove it! My rant ended.

A couple days later I went into our home pub and asked the owner about his insurance rates and if they were affected by having dart boards. He responded that; "Insurance rates always go up!" But I wanted to know if it had anything to do with dartboards.

He said that he was with the same agent for the entire time that he had owned the bar, and his rates were lower than most other bars in the area. He also mentioned that his agent was more interested in having him install non-slip mats, and improving his storage area as employee injury claims in bars were on the rise.

So armed with the name and phone number of the agent I called the offending venue, and chatted with the manager sharing my research. A few weeks ago I spoke to the insurance agent, and the manager has yet to call.

Great Lakes Dart Challenge write up by Bobby Jones

So I'm at the Great Lakes Dart Challenge, two weekends after my first big tournament (Windy City Open) in over 17 years out of the sport of darts. My wife and I got back into it about four months ago, practicing diligently at home, playing in the local blind draws, and feeling pretty good about how well we've been shooting. Windy City was tough - did I mention that Windy City was TOUGH? I figured I could go head to head with the top shooters and at least hold my own. Boy, was I wrong! I forgot about "tournament nerves", but figured, "ok, now I'm shooting a big tournament in MY bar - I won't be nervous shooting against anyone!" Friday night I walk into Westwood at the Crossing, the venue for the GLDC, and take a look around - Steve Brown, Darin Young, Brad Wethington, Jim Simpson, Isen Veljic, Ray Carver. John Kuczynski, Joe Slivan, Gary Mawson, Ed (Bam-Bam)DeBanke, Dave DePriest - er, am I in Chicago again? Hello, big tournament nerves!!!!! Even Rocky Willis, my friend, asks me if I have my "Chicago Darts" with me this weekend - not a good sign! (By the way, thanks, Rocky, for my new nickname "Chicago Bob" - I noticed that really took those big shooters out of their game when they heard that! Smile) The weakest link went pretty well, though, as I got knocked out with a 32 instead of the 7 that took me out in Chicago, so I was feeling better already. In the blind draw I got Sue Little from Canada, who is an excellent shooter, and after some tense moments we managed to get past our first round. Then we run into Bill Trapp and Fireman Don and are promptly taken out. Hats off to Sue for shooting with me and helping me calm the tournament nerves! (Sue and her partner Marion Carli took 1st place in the Women's Doubles 501 - congrats, Sue and Marion!) I got into the second luck, drawing Ruthie from Kalamazoo, but it wasn't our night and we exited after the first round, so it's off to get some well deserved rest at home!

Saturday's first event was the Blind Draw Mixed Triples - an interesting format and a lot of fun. Fortunately for me, my nerves were overcome by two excellent partners - Ruthie from Kzoo again, and Neil Q from Novi, who really helped our team make it into the top sixteen! Hooray, my first big tournament money since the 17 year hiatus - I was really happy! I should mention that the team who beat us (Lori Kiley/Gary Mawson/Ed "Bam-Bam" DeBanke ended up taking 1st place in the Blind Draw mixed triples event - congrats!) Congratulations, also, to my wife Jenny, as she also finished in the top 16 of the mixed triples blind draw (although I never did get to shoot against her!) Next is open doubles 501, and Monte Jones and I struggled, to say the least, and were overcome in the first round by locals James Fleming and Church, who were on top form. Next up is single 501, and my most memorable match by far of the entire weekend. I drew Jim Askham, from Chicago - if you ever want to meet the nicest guy in darts, make sure you introduce yourself to Jim. He was a gracious player, and I managed to play decently enough to win, but it was absolutely one of the most fun matches I've ever played in my life. He complimented me on shots that weren't that great, but I was struggling and he knew it and his encouragement helped me to get past the nerves and actually find the triple twenty, in his words. I had a chance to chat with Jim later in the evening and we both agreed that sometimes the "fun" of darts is lost in these big competitions, and that our match was genuinely a "fun" match! I can only hope I represent the sport of darts as elegantly and graciously as Jim! My next draw, the famous Jon Douglas, was alas, not as much "fun" as Jon opened on my with a maximum, winning the first leg. In the next leg Jon
