'If I may paraphrase old Ludwig,' recites Waddell, ' 'it is as hard to define sport as it is as hard to define language . . .' What is language? I've just read Ludmila's Broken English by DBC Pierre, who writes quite brilliantly in the style of a schoolboy, and The Lay of the Land by Richard Ford, some of whose sentences are longer than my street.
