Update: Iconic bar to close - Prince of Wales Pub in San Mateo Ca.

Here is an update that I just discovered:

In other Peninsula changes, the San Mateo institution, Prince of Wales (106 E. 25th Ave., near El Camino Real), has closed and reopened as the Swinging Door. The Prince of Wales was known for its incendiary habanero burger as well as its patrons' devotion to darts.

The darts tournaments continue, as does the burger, although with a different recipe, says Swinging Door manager Bruce Johnson, who worked with Prince owner Jack Curry for many years.

The upstairs space has been converted to a piano bar open Wednesday through Saturday evenings.

New top toque at Michael Mina

By Dana Yates Erik Oeverndiek/Daily Journal Jack Curry, owner of The Prince of Wales Pub in San Mateo, will pour his last drink at the pub on Jan. 21. A San Mateo institution know for its world-renowned dart tournaments, history of famous clientele and ability to make anyone feel at home is about to close its doors — and not by choice. The Prince of Wales Pub at 106 E. 25th Ave. will close its doors and shut off the neon fish ‘n’ chips sign on Jan 21. The building where the bar began more than 50 years ago was recently sold and the new owner is giving current owner Jack Curry the boot. The new owner, Warren Chapman, is already creating a bar on the second floor and plans on taking over the ground floor. He was recently issued a liquor license and plans to call the place “The Swinging Door,” Curry said.

The darting side of the story is told at:

Anybody familiar with darts in the SF Bay Area knows about the Prince of Wales Pub in San Mateo. The owner Jack curry hosts the longest running dart tournament in the country at over 30 years! Unfortunatley a new owner has bought the building that the POW lives in and has given Jack Curry & the pub the boot.

Ttonight (Jan. 20, 2007) is the last dart tournament - $300. Starts at 8pm
