John O'Groat Journal and Caithness Courier: Anti-climax as Castletown make sure of championship

Anti-climax as Castletown make sure of championship
Published: 14 March, 2007

THE final week of the season in Thurso and District Darts League turned out to be a bit of a damp squib as only one match was played.

Castletown "A" were scheduled to play their last match at home to the Park but, having had problems raising a team, the Park forfeited the match and gave Castletown "A" the points and the league title.

Similarly, Halkirk were unable to field a team against RBL so they too forfeited the points, leaving RBL in second place.

The only match that did go ahead was Newmarket v Castletown "B".

Newmarket comfortably took the first round of pairs and Neil Anderson beat Darren Miller in the first of the singles, having an 18-dart leg checking out on 120. Gordie Campbell got the visitors' only point in the singles against John MacIntyre.

John Stevenson was not allowing Neil to have all the glory on the night as he too hit an 18-dart leg.

The reverse-pairs points were shared, with Eddie Reid and Dave McQueen beating Neil and John, and the father-and-son pairing of John and Stevie Stevenson taking the final points from Darren and Gordie.

This week sees Knockout Cup action with the men's semis and final and the ladies' final being played in the New Weigh Inn. Men's teams playing are Castletown "A", RBL, Halkirk and Newmarket, while the ladies' final is between the league winners and runners-up, Redwood and Highlander. The games start at 8pm.

Saturday, March 17 sees the annual East v West match. This year had been Thurso and District Darts League's turn to host the event but, due to there being no suitable venue in Thurso to hold the tournament, it will now be played in the Back Bridge Street club, Wick.

Thurso's team captains this year will be Donnie Farquhar (men's "A"), Neil Anderson (men's "B") and Rona Young (ladies). A bus will be leaving the Comm Bar at 6.45pm and going via Castletown.

Supporters will be welcome.
