WORLD champion darts player Eric Bristow is to challenge local players to a game in Baughurst tonight (Thursday, October 2), to mark the closure of a leisure centre bar. The Crafty Cockney, as he is known, will be at the Hurst Leisure Centre, Brimpton Lane, for the event, which starts at 7.30pm. Bar manager, Phil Capel, said that Mr Bristow had offered his support at the event in commiseration over the closure of the bar. The decision to close the bar, which had been open for 11 years, was made by the Hurst governing body, to develop the facility into a coffee and juice bar, in line with current national strategy for schools. However Mr Capel said that the decision had not taken into account the wider interests of the community, and would affect four pool and three darts teams who regularly played league matches in the bar. "The pool teams included an all girls team which has had to fold now they have no-where to play," said Mr Capel. Eric Bristow won his first world championship in 1980, defeating fellow Londoner Bobby George and so began a decade's worth of domination, retaining his title in 1981 and winning it again in 1984, 1985 and 1986. He is also famed for his style, involving the extension of his little finger. When he pulls the dart back from aiming position, he circles it with all of his fingers, therefore leading to speculation that the routine with the little finger was worthless to his throw. When asked about it, Bristow admitted the style was "just for show". The champion darts player will be challenging ten plucky people in the crowd to a game of darts at 7.30pm. The Hurst Leisure Centre's bar will be calling its very last orders the following evening (Friday October 3). (source link...)
