VELDHOVEN - Darter Darryl Fitton won zondag de finale van het Dutch Open in Veldhoven van Willy van de Wiel uit Rijen (3-2). Het leverde de Engelsman 4500 euro op en punten voor de wereldranglijst. In de halve finale versloeg de 'Dazzler' landgenoot Tony O'Shea.

Het grootste dartstoernooi van Europa lokte tijdens vier speeldagen ruim 3700 deelnemers naar Koningshof, veel minder dan vorige jaren. Voorzitter Symon Timmers van de organiserende Nederlandse Darts Bond (NDB): "Het heeft te maken met de huidige economische crisis, de verminderde tv-exposure en het rookverbod. In het dartswereldje wordt straf gerookt."

Wellicht is er nog een reden voor de lagere opkomst. De NDB valt zoals de Britse BDO onder de overkoepelende World Darts Federation. Met name de BDO, die de Lakeside in Frimley Green organiseert, verliest steeds meer toppers aan concurrent PDC, de strikt op professioneel topdarten gerichte bond die spelers als Phil Taylor en Raymond van Barneveld in de gelederen heeft. De in Veldhoven geafficheerde Andy Fordham stapte afgelopen woensdag over naar de PDC, Lakeside-winnaar 2008 Mark Webster deed dit weekend hetzelfde.
