Darts: Ace aims to reduce Barney to rubble

Adam Steel, Evening Gazette

Phil Taylor has promised to reduce Raymond van Barneveld to rubble when the big darts heavyweights slug it out again in Sheffield tonight.

Taylor missed the chance of a 14th world championship title when PDC arch rival Barney beat him in a nerve-jangling last leg in Purfleet on New Year's Day.

TheStar.com - Life - Darts hit a bull's-eye with kids

At one time, the game of darts made people think of adults in dark, smoky bars.

But that stereotype is waning and these days there are plenty of kids playing darts, says Marjorie Allardyce, youth director for Darts Ontario.

There are 27 youth leagues in the province, most at branches of the Royal Canadian Legion.

There could be lots of other clubs in Ontario, Allardyce believes, if dart leagues were allowed in schools.

But education officials forbid that because they consider a dart a weapon, she says.

That's unfortunate because kids learn many things from the sport of darts, Allardyce says.

"It teaches them a lot about concentration and team play," she says.

"And it really helps their mathematics. The kids have to add up their own scores. A lot of parents have told me how much their children's math has improved by playing darts.

"It's a great sport for the kids," said Allardyce. "And it is a cheap sport."

To get started in a league, participants buy a set of three darts, which usually costs less than $20.

A Darts Ontario membership costs $13 per year. Club registration fees are between $25 and $50.

Darts Ontario has three age groupings for youths. Those 12 and younger are tyke players. Juniors are 15 and younger, seniors 18 and younger.

Kids in leagues can simply play to have fun if they wish, but Darts Ontario members can also enter competitive events that lead to national championships. (Those at the tyke level, however, do not progress past the provincial level.)

There is no official minimum age for kids to start playing in a darts league.

"It depends on the club," Allardyce says. The youngest members at most clubs are 8 or 9, although, "some have them playing as young as 6."

BRITISH DARTS ORGANISATION STATEMENT

This statement was posted on the BDO darts forum. I'm not sure if the content of the statement is valid, but it's worth a look....

BRITISH DARTS ORGANISATION STATEMENT

In order to clarify any misinterpretations of a PDC press release issued on Wednesday, February 21st announcing a tournament involving players from the BDO and PDC, I can confirm that it was released without the prior agreement or permission of the British Darts Organisation or the potential broadcaster.

It is important to point out that as a direct result of the constant striving of the BDO to secure more televised tournaments, we have been having preliminary confidential talks with a major broadcaster to create a one-off invitation event, which would involve both BDO and PDC players.

We have given an undertaking to support such an event if it clearly benefits the BDO, its players, its officials and the sport of darts.

With this in mind, it is vitally important to the success and viewer appeal of such an event that both codes are fairly represented in terms of players, officials, staging and presentation.

In order to achieve this, the talks need to be ongoing so that we can create a major televised event that will be mutually beneficial to all parties.

It has always been a British Darts Organisation policy to announce events to our members only when they become reality.

At the moment no agreement has been reached in regard to this proposed event.

ADO regional change of venue...

This email is regarding the ADO regional that WAS set to be held at Dargan's in Santa Barbara. It will be held at the James Joyce
Today we were notified that Dargan's in Santa Barbara is no longer interested in supporting darts. Very nice of them to let us know 3 days before we start our new league!!!!!!

So this means for next weeks Regional there will be a change of venue. The James Joyce in Santa Barbara on State St will be hosting the event. They have 4 boards so it should be just fine. Actually they are a great bar, have the best Guinness in town and have been very enthusiastic about supporting our dart league.

Here is the information for the James Joyce:
James Joyce
www.thejamesjoyce.com
513 State St
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
(805) 962-2688

As for the league play, we will be having a new venue open up at The Green Room on State St. They will not be ready by this week but we still plan on starting on Tuesday. I will have to completely redo the schedule I worked on all day yesterday now that Dargan's is dropping out. I hope to have it up on the website by sometime tonight.

Thanks for your patience through all of this. Sometimes it's a very thankless job and very frustrating. I know everyone wants to start league asap and I'm one of them as well.

See you Tuesday.

It's your chance to be on TV!

Are you into reality TV? Well if you are a family of Darters and want to be on a reality TV show, then this is your chance! Just check out this email I got this morning!

Subject: FW: Dart Family for TV Show

Greetings!
My name is Rachelle Mendez and I'm a Casting Producer for ABC Television's hit reality show, Wife Swap. I ‘m conducting a National Casting Search to find Passionate Dart Fans to feature on the current season of our show , and am contacting you in hopes of discussing the possibility of working together to find a family who we can consider casting.
Wife Swap is a family show on ABC primetime. The premise is simple: two moms from two very different families get the opportunity to swap lives (but not bedrooms - everyone has their own!) for a week to experience what it's like to live a different lifestyle - and to see what they can teach each other about their own lifestyle!
We want to feature a family that’s devoted to darts in some form-this could be through tournaments, competitions, leagues/teams, or playing for fun. We encourage all families, the bolder and more adventurous the better, with 2 parents at home and school aged children (ages 6-17) to apply immediately. The family can belong to any aspect of the dart community-as fans, promoters, players-it really makes no difference, as long as the family is genuinely passionate about Darts!
Maybe you know of a family or have a family yourself with made for TV personalities that you would be willing to recommend. I would greatly appreciate you forwarding my information on to any of your family members, friends, and associates who might be interested in sharing their lives with us for a week!
In addition, each family that tapes an episode of Wife Swap receives a financial honorarium for their time. Anyone who refers a family that appears on our program receives a finder's fee.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this - I know it is an unusual request. If you have any questions, or to apply, please contact me by phone or by email:

An email from Jan Kid.....

Thanks to everyone for making the Queen Mary Classic V a huge success, and I think, a lot of fun. I will send out the final results when I get them in a few days time.
Some of the events started much later than we expected, and I apologize for that. We are already working on ideas for next year to start closer to the times advertised and to increase the number of dartboards.

I have a plea from one of the dartplayers that lost an Ipod on Saturday, for anyone who may have found it, to let me know as soon as possible, so that it can be returned. It may not have been lost in the dart area as he did visit other areas of the ship, but below is a description of the lost gadget...

It is black, with headphones and has an inscription on the back 'WALDO Sheik Yerbouti'

The return of this item would be really appreciated as it was a gift.

Thanks again,

Bull's-eye! David, 13, beats world darts finalist

DARTS daft David Worthington, 13, hit the bull's-eye when he beat world championship finalist Phill Nixon in a one-off challenge
Local hero Nixon, nicknamed "Ferrryhill Flyer", is the 150-1 rank outsider who nearly pulled off a shock win in last month's World Darts Championship after coming from 6-0 down in the final to eventually lose out 7-6.
To thank his North East supporters, the County Durham ace is touring workingmen's clubs taking on all-comers in exhibition matches.
But he hadn't bargained on dead-eye shot David who left the Lakeside World Championship in his wake with a display of magic darts.
In their match Nixon started on 501 and David on 301. Nixon, a 50-year-old dad-of-eight from Ferryhill, was stuck on 164 when his teenage opponent hit the decisive double 10 to claim victory.
Seaham School of Technology pupil David, who dreams of being a darts player when he grows up, was shaking with nerves when he went head-to-head with his idol.
He was one of 26 players picked from the hat to play Phill when he visited Dawdon Miners' Welfare Club this week.
David's mum Beverly, who works at the club, said: "Before they played David ran up the stairs and was shaking. I told him everyone shakes when they're nervous.
"When he won I was ecstatic for him. He loves darts."
David, from Parkside, practises on a board at his the home of his grandparents, Leslie and Gladys Wilcock, in Wynyard Street.
Mrs Wilcock, 62, and her daughter have both played for the club's women's team in the past.
David also has a board in his room and often spends the first part of his mother's shifts at the Mount Stewart Street club practising.
Mr Wilcock, 65, added: "He was over the moon. He said he was shaking at first but then he was able to beat him."
David succeeded where 16 men, eight women and two other youngsters failed, with Phill giving the women and youngsters a headstart by throwing his darts flight-first.
The sports star also signed the board used during the night, which was then raffled.
Club secretary Marion Napper said: "Phill was very friendly, a very nice man.
"He was speaking to everyone to sign autographs and it was a really good night."
Phill rose to fame after staging an amazing fightback against England captain Martin Adams in the Lakeside competition.
He had been 6-0 down, then drew level, but was pipped 7-6 for the £70,000 prize.

From: Della Fleetwood <dellafleetwood@yahoo.com>

Subject: Las Vegas Open Results
Dear Friends,
The 29th annual Tom Fleetwood Memorial Las Vegas Open is now history. For your information, I have attached is a copy of the official tournament results.

This year's event was a tremendous success, thanks to the generosity of our Dartboard Sponsors (DMI / Puma Darts Products, Ltd.) and the wonderful cooperation and hospitality from the Tuscany Suites & Casino. My sincere appreciation also goes to the ADO, for selecting this tournament as the site for their annual National Cricket Championship, and to the players -- from 42 states and 7 nations -- who chose to participate in the tournament.

As always, I am indebted to my Triple Crown Staff members. Their enthusiasm, support and reliable efficiency makes them the BEST in the business!!!
Once again, players opened their hearts and wallets, in support of the Raffle for the Prevention of Child Abuse. A total of $550 was collected, all of which will assist in the on-going effort to strengthen families and insure a brighter future for their children!

The 2008 Las Vegas Open is tentatively scheduled for January 25 - 27, at the Tuscany Suites & Casino. Further information will be forthcoming, later this year!!! I hope to see you there!!!!

Karl M. Hartman - 10/02/2007 I got the impression in reading over my posts, that there was a lot of negativity regarding darts either here in Korea or between my ears and so I decided to say something positive about the darts scene in Korea.

Before I do that I will say two things. I finally received my $900.00 from Medalist Darts Korea. I won the tournament on the 18th of December and I received my prize money January 27th. I had to find out where the main office to Medalist in Korea was and begin sending E-mails. Someone must have contacted the local rep because he contacted me soon after that and I received my money. So far, Petro has not received his prize money; however, he has not pursued it as aggressively as I have to my knowledge.

Having addressed the issues of format, exposure, expense, time and travel and seeing the standards rising steadily, we were still faced with unearthing young potential. Many youngsters had now slipped comfortably into Pool and those who were playing amongst themselves weren’t getting much better because of the Catch-22 scenario of “couldn’t get into a team because they weren’t good enough and weren’t good enough because they couldn’t get into a team”, the crucial next step on the ladder. Many teams won’t accommodate youngsters because they want ready made success and there are many pubs who will not allow under 18’s.

John Markovic

THE Professional Darts Corporation send their condolences to the family of John Markovic, who passed away on Saturday following a long illness.

Serbian-born John played an influential role in the formation of the World Darts Council - which is now known as the PDC - back in 1992.

A popular character, he was the manager of Bob Anderson and Ritchie Gardner at the time 14 of the leading players left the BDO.

John worked alongside fellow managers Tommy Cox and Dick Allix to support the players following this move and create the WDC.

"John was a genial character and always immaculately dressed," said Tommy Cox, now the PDC's Tournament Director.

"John was a superb businessman and he understood the business of darts very well.

"He played a major part in the foundation of the PDC and in many ways he was the cement between the bricks - he was just as important as anybody in ensuring the World Darts Council started on a sound footing.

"He always had a smile on his face and quip - he was one of the driest men I've ever met. John was so dapper he reminded me of a 50s film star, until he opened his mouth and spoke with his distinctive accent.

"He will never be forgotten in the folklore of the Professional Darts Corporation."

King at the centre of darts controversy
Tuesday, 6 February 2007 20:46 Mervyn King was today threatened with legal action by the British Darts Organisation, after confirming he is switching to play on the rival Professional Darts Corporation circuit.

The former World Masters champion is following three top Dutch players belonging to the same management company - Michael van Gerwen, Jelle Klaasen and Vincent van der Voort - who also contested this year's Lakeside World Championship, before crossing the sport's bitter divide.

But the 40-year-old is bound to the BDO under the terms of a contract he signed, stating that any player who reached the semi-finals at the Lakeside this year would return to contest the event in 2008. King was beaten in the last four by eventual champion Martin Adams.

King departs BDO ranks
Former World Masters champion Mervyn King has left the British Darts Organisation to ply his trade in rival Professional Darts Corporation events.

The move, which mirrors the switches made by players such as Raymond van Barneveld and Jelle Klaasen in recent years, comes as a surprise after the player's own vehement denial that he would head for the lucrative PDC tour.

King even threatened to walk out of the recent BDO Lakeside World Championships at protest at the speculation that surrounded his future.

But it now seems that his semi-final defeat to eventual winner Martin Adams will be King's last appearance on the BDO oche.
