The fourth annual John Kearney memorial darts tournament takes place on Sunday, September 10, in Flanagan’s Bar, Castleplunkett, Co Roscommon. The tournament draw will take place at 4 p.m.. The games will commence at 4.30 p.m.
The prize fund is based on a money in money out basis (€1,000 based on 64 players).
The entry fee is €15 per player. A raffle will take place with all proceeds going to Croí.
Previous winners include Sean Finan in 2003, Sligo’s Bob Alexander in 2004 and the same player last year."

Stacy Bromberg has represented the United States against some of the best competition around the world. She's the only woman in her sport who has been written up twice in Sports Illustrated.
She's just that good a dart player. The very best of female players in the nation, in fact. But Bromberg would tell you it's no big deal; she's just having fun.
“If I had to put it in words, the last 19 years that I've played I couldn't have bought it,” she said. “I couldn't put a price on it. If I wake up tomorrow morning and my right hand is dead, all I can do is thank God for what I've already gotten out of the sport. It's been a great ride.”
Bromberg brought her game to Tallahassee on Tuesday night, putting on an exhibition game and a clinic at the Salty Dawg Pub & Deli. For two hours, she gave a crash course to anyone who wanted to know how to become a better-than-average dart player.
Some of the people were newcomers. Others have played for years in a local city league that's played among 10 teams.
Everyone got Bromberg's spiel on how to be a good dart player. She must know, having been ranked the 32nd most-recognized athlete in Nevada by Sports Illustrated."

"PAUL McGimpsey and Janice Wilson both had memorable days out in Derby last weekend. The two Cumbrians won through from their groups to play in the International stages of the Winmau World Masters and the Women’s World Singles later in the year at Bridlington.
Make no mistake about it. Our pair were playing against top quality opposition. In fact, every player there had won through to that stage by beating the best players in their County set-ups. Paul had to get through a couple of rounds and beat Paul Skelton to book his place in the final play offs. "

The local darts player recently won the national singles title at the New Zealand Chartered Clubs Championships, and with that came the right to represent New Zealand at the world’s richest darts competition, the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championships in England, which French said offered prize money of about £150,000 (about NZ$450,000).
Overall, the championships offer more than $1.25 million in prize money.
French is currently the only New Zealander to have qualified for the world event, in the second year of automatic qualifying through the New Zealand tournament, but New Zealand darts players still have one more chance to join him through the Oceanic Masters in Australia."

Anita Te Amo wants to make the New Zealand team within five years, but is aware there are some tough players ahead of her.
The Palmerston North 19 year old had a good run at the national championships, culminating in her making the North Island B team, which beat the South Island at Arena Manawatu last night.
Te Amo went to her first national senior championship at the age of 12. She now feels ready to match the big names in women's darts.

I rustled the bushes once where I lived as a boy in Ohio and an empty bird’s nest fell into my mother’s garden. Down here in Florida small lizards scramble for cover. In other parts of the world where the bushes are bigger and uglier, like Sumatra and Boston, orangutans and even people come tumbling out. That’s what happened following my column two days ago reporting on the issues that are closing in on the embattled Board of Directors of the Minute Man Dart League (MMDL) in Massachusetts.
Although I have been communicating with people for months and thought I had a handle on the situation – the basic issues of financial fumbling or worse, conflicts of interest, unfair elections, mistreatment of those who ask questions about how the league is run, and more – even I was surprised at the number of people who bounded from cover to let me know that my words had struck a cord. "

Although the final event, the DHL Open Singles at Almond Bay, was won by Andy Bradbury from the UK, all the other quarter finalists in both the men's and ladies' competitions came from the region.
The British touring party had plenty of experienced players of county and superleague standard who were expected to do well in this event but the calibre of the darts now being played in the Caribbean has risen appreciably and this was vividly demonstrated during the course of the entire ten day DHL Festival."

(August 22, 2006)—The Patriot Dart League (PDL) is proud to announce the formation of the “Massachusetts Pro Player Developmental Singles League”, a new league for aspiring professional dart players to hone their skills for competing at the highest levels of international professional darts. The new league will commence match play for the Fall 2006 season on “Patriot Day,” Monday, September 11, 2006.
The PDL Pro Player League was created to provide serious dart players the opportunity to train for competing against European professionals, who currently dominate the sport by a large margin. “It’s similar to the way basketball was for the United States for many years,” said Mark Clifford, founder of the Patriot Dart League, “but instead it’s the Europeans that are dominating over us in the sport. In order for us to turn the tables on them, again just like what happened to the US in basketball, we have to train in a way that’s closer to the way they play rather than the format used currently in the United States. That’s what this league provides.”
Viewers of this past summer’s ESPN program, The World Series of Darts, witnessed 16 of the country’s best players compete against the top 16 ranked players in the world, only to see one American survive the first round. A large percentage of the 16 American players were from New England and play in Massachusetts. It is the mission of the Patriot Dart League to not only prepare players to upset European professionals, but to capture a major tournament title in one of their own televised professional dart tournaments, perhaps even one day the coveted PDC World Championship held in Purfleet, England.
The PDL Pro Player Developmental Singles League will commence its inaugural season, coincidentally, on “Patriot Day,” September 11, 2006. The 14-week season will consist of a long-set format of the game of 501, the exclusive game in use at all professional tournaments. The league is available to all players aged 21 and over, and of all abilities. Players can either be those aspiring to reach the highest ranks of the sport or those who simply enjoy the game recreationally, but on a serious level.

I always enjoy a good story about any dart event, but sometimes it's easy to over look that getting there is half the battle! Here's a little of Mischelle Martell's story (Black Bull Darts http://www.blackbulldarts.com/)
It was early Thursday morning as I arrived at the Oakland Airport (almost 3 hours prior to my departing flight) and checked in at the “self-help” kiosk. I only had one piece of luggage, so I figured it would be a breeze to get it checked, since I knew ahead of time that there were issues with the security checkpoints, and had already placed all of the “liquid items” in my suitcase. I was only at the kiosk for 3 or so minutesgetting my boarding pass, when I’m directed toward a long line that made me feel like I was waiting to get on the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland.
The guard near the end of the line was announcing as to what passengers can not bring on board the plane, and as I approached him about my need to check my luggage first before getting into what I thought was the security line, he simply stated, “this is the line for checking your bags. Thirty Five minutes later, my bag goes aboard. I was starting to “sweat it” a little bit, because as my mother used to say when i was little, “If you’re early, you’re on time, and if you’re on time, you’re LATE”...yet I knew there’s still the security checkpoint to have to deal with. (The line for the security checkpoint zigzagged 5 times around a webbed "fence", straight back through the baggage claim and out the door toward the passenger drop-off area...I’d have to guess it was at least 8 times longer than the

They say that where there’s smoke there’s fire but you never really know – not if the person or persons sniffing the smoke aren’t allowed in the house to explore. That’s the sum of the crisis currently swirling about the largest darts league in the world, the Minute Man Dart League (MMDL) of Massachusetts. For reasons unknown and as more and more questions arise about how huge amounts of money have been spent or squandered, conflicts of interest, unfair elections, banning of members, conduct unbecoming and more, some of those who with an iron hand have for a quarter-century controlled the MMDL Board of Directors have chosen to close ranks and padlock their door rather than answer to those they are supposed to represent.
It may be that there is no fire. Time will tell. The IRS has a way of prying open even the most tightly locked of doors, and the Commonwealth’s Attorney General’s Office of Public Charities has just passed them the case. "

RNA are Section One champions in the Summer League of Barbara Rawlinson Memorial Darts with Halton Road near neighbours Halfway Aces in runners-up spot.
These finishing positions were reversed in the Challenge as triumphant Aces completed the competition undefeated.
Section Two league champions are the Flights, based at the Travellers Rest (The Tup) off Highlands Road.
After a late scramble for honours, Crafty Crofters pipped Flights to the Challenge honours.
Newcomers Clarendon lifted the Section Three league title with Burma in second spot - it was vice-versa in the Challenge table.

Well, once again its time to head over to Stamford CT for the USA Dart Classic and the 501 National Championships. The week started out normally enough, but that would soon change.
Tuesday I get a call from a reporter in Ft Wayne Indiana requesting an interview regarding Dan Brown, a National Youth Championship hopeful. People in my business seem to be having an especially hard time with accepting darts as a sport. They will have you believe that anything you can do while drinking a beer and/or holding a cigarette cannot be considered a sport, even using the most liberal definition of the word.
Well, I guess they've never seen John Daly play golf.
If golf is a sport, and a widely accepted one at that, why isn't darts? It takes the same skills to compete at the highest level: years of practice and tremendous eye-hand coordination.
In golf, with the possible exception of Caddies Day at the local muni and the Scottsdale Open, the gallery even shuts its collective pie hole when you are lining up a shot. Try to get the pub to do the same when you're throwing darts."

With the William Cross less than 3 weeks away, Dave McKay caught up with Darts Icon Bob Anderson, Bob talks about his upcoming visit to Australia, How he thumped Russell Stewart in 1990 and that record breaking 15 Dart 801 that he produced at an Exhibition in Cornwall recently.
DM: G'day Bob,
Firstly, let me say how excited we are all here in Australia with the prospect of you coming Down Under to show us your brand of darting expertise. It has been a while now since someone of your darting pedigree paid us a visit.
BA: Thank you Dave, I'm looking forward to this visit and I know we're all going to have a great time at the William Cross event.
DM: In the 1980s you started appearing in televised Dart events and had the greatest of results in 1988, winning the Embassy World Championship. Has this been your finest moment in Darts? If not, what do you consider to be your crowning achievement?
BA: The World Championships has been the high spot in playing terms, but being made Captain of England was definitely my proudest moment, so far.

But just to play the devils advocate for a second - and to preface my comment, I LOVE watching the WSOD... but...
Most people can't stand watching sports when they know the outcome. The thrill of sports is 'what's going to happen next?' and 'How will the athlete perform?'
In my opinion, the downfall of the WSOD in ratings was due mostly to two factors:
- those who watched and were introduced or re-introduced to darts got interested and started cruising darts web sites and maybe even subscribed to BEN (I know I did!). This invariably brought you to the fact that the WSOD was held in May, the Americans got trounced, and Phil Taylor won. End of suspense.
- The fact that an American did not win took all the steam out of this for many viewers.
Playing the tournament in May, breaking it up into 8 1 hour episodes that air over 3 months is ridiculous. This should have been aired in June at the latest- before most people knew of the outcome. (Heck, they do drag racing that way. They condense a weekend of racing into an edited hour broadcast and show it the following weekend.)
The tournament was flawed in one respect, suspense wise- they needed to whittle this down to the best Brit vs. the best American- that would have kept the suspense up for the American viewing audience through the whole tournament. If it wasn't for Johnny K., it was over in the first round for many. And as far as suspense goes, his first round win was the most exciting part of this show.
I loved watching, will continue to watch (and record) the remaining episodes of the WSOD. It has reinvigorated me to set up a board and start practicing again. Maybe this time life won't get in the way and I can stick with a game I've loved for over 25 years. So, in that respect, the WSOD has done its job at least in my house.

Dan Brown, age 17, is going to compete in the U.S. Youth National Championships in Connecticut. Some nationally-ranked darters say he is the one to beat.
Most teen-agers playing with sharp objects would result in their elders running away or calling for the police. With Dan Brown, they say he might end up being a national champion.
Brown, 17, is competing this weekend at the American Dart Organization’s Youth Nationals in Stamford, Conn. The Norwell high school junior placed seventh in the event last year and third two years ago. Both times he was eliminated by the eventual champion."

A 119 finish from Phil Hooks took Total Confusion a step closer to Runcorn Apec Taxis Darts League's Section Five title as they defeated third-placed Union Tavern 6-3.
With just two weeks of the summer programme remaining, they have a four-point lead over the Union and second-placed Prospect Has Beens, who were without a match."

Cupid's arrow became a dart as they decided to tie the knot at Blackpool.
For Clare, 30, and Daz, 25, who live in Henry Street, were wed during the semi-finals of the Stan James World Matchplay Darts Tournament and celebrated cheering on their favourites on the oche at the Winter Gardens."
