When Darren Webster goes to work fitting windows on Tuesday morning, it's likely darts legend Phil 'The Power' Taylor will just be waking up as world champion for the 14th time.
Although the pair seem worlds apart they shared the stage last night as Norwich's Webster took on the legend in the biggest match of his career in the quarter-final of the Ladbrookes.com World Championship at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet.

WITH THE prospect of the World Championship at the famous Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green loomimg it was an opportune moment for Brian ‘Pecker’ Woods to warm up with a super win at Maryport’s Station Inn on Boxing Day from a very strong field of very good players.
Pecker beat his frequent rival and sometimes nemesis Garry Bellard in a high quality final match of a very good day of darts.

He is one of the most naturally gifted young darts stars the sport has ever produced but 2007 will be a defining year for Adrian Lewis.
Up on the big stage, he is pure box office and often steals the show but the last two World Championship tournaments have shown up a weakness in his game. There is a mental block and a lack of concentration, which has proved to be his Achilles heel.
12 months ago in the quarter-finals, Lewis was undone by the Manley mind games...this year he looked in the form of his life and everyone was predicting a semi-final showdown against Barneveld. Yet again though, it all went wrong - this time in the 3rd Round against Andy Jenkins.

Well, the conflab between Chris Mason and Phil Taylor certainly had more press coverage than Tony Blair’s desperate search for a legacy! As the furore over Mason’s press outburst and alleged obscene outburst roars on, consider this….Mason has many times told me how much he respects Phil and what he has done for the sport.
My take on the remarks in the press about big-headedness are that Chris wanted to unstabilise ‘The Power’ temporarily and make him drop an early set. I see any words slung by Mason at the end, as extreme disappointment bubbling over into venom.

Raymond "Barney" van Barneveld and Phil "The Power" Taylor set up tomorrow's dream final in the PDC World Darts Championship by crushing their semi-final opponents 6-0.
Van Barneveld whitewashed Andy Jenkins in the first semi-final, but Taylor was not to be outdone, handing out the same treatment to Andy Hamilton.
Taylor is a 13-time world champion, while his Dutch opponent has won the rival BDO World Championship four times.

ANDY JENKINS paid tribute to his late father after causing a World Championship upset.
The unfancied Portsmouth thrower rallied from 2-0 down to beat fifth seed Adrian Lewis 4-3 - three weeks after his dad Chris died of a heart attack.
That put ‘Rocky’ Jenkins, 35, into the last eight at the Circus Tavern for the first time and he now meets Colin Osborne today.

WELCOME to Dartoid’s World, the only column about darts that has been ranked three times consecutively in a row one time right after the other among the top causes of barfing.
Today’s subject is my recent three-week 28,000-mile darts journey from Tampa, Florida to Thailand, Cambodia, Korea, Los Angeles and someplace called Pasco in southeast Washington where I threw a challenge match and met a darter named Shawnee Jumping Turtle.
My first stop was Bangkok - there had just been a coup here so I thought it would be a good place to visit and throw darts. Dartoid’s World

My Grannie Mary Jane sold plants to horse traders in Alwick, Northumberland in the 1930s and she taught me words like ‘gadgie’(man), ‘jugel’(dog) and the great Dide word made famous by Del Boy – ‘custy’ (sweet, great, lovely).
So, the other night I had a deep discussion of such terms with Chris Mason and an Essex pal of his. They said that ‘custy’ should be pronounced ‘cushty’ and that my northern pronunciation was wrong! Who is right and who is wrong? BLOG me if you know or have any other gypsy words!

The Power beat Mason 4-0 as the feuding duo traded insults at the oche.
And Taylor threatened to quit as the PDC World Championship descended into chaos in Purfleet.
Mason, 37, raged: "If he wants to sort it out in the car park, I’ll see him there because I’m a better man than him.
"I grew up hard, making bog chains. Taylor used to be a big fish in a small pond, now he thinks he is God. It seems to be one rule for him and one for the rest of us."

And be able to do it in a manner that was totally and completely politically correct. Inasmuch as the aspect of moderators making sure that things do not get out of line and that people are respectful in their agreements and disagreements. So many threads…..so many topics…..so little time to keep track of them all. I felt like I found darting nirvana. Many subjects and topics came and went. Discussions were healthy, fun, serious, moody, and opinionated, yet directed in such a manner that regardless of the positive or negative, everyone got something out of it. Darts extends to rural areas

Blantyre and Districts Darts League's (BDDL) campaign of extending to rural areas kick-started with Christmas Eve Open tournament at Ntono Spot in Thondwe, Zomba.
Gearbox Kamboga of Zomba defeated 18 players to emerge champion walking away with a live goat as a Christmas present.
BDDL said they also organised the tournament in an effort to try and erase the mentality that the sport was for urban people.
Gordon Tsakamu, member of the organising committee, hailed the young players for their performance.
"We are also trying to fine tune upcoming young players, who will be joining the league next season," Tsakamu said. "Most the players are quite good and next season we should expect BDDL to be more competitive."

DARTS - THE Swaziland National Sports Council (SNSC) Development Officer, Dan Mavuso has described sponsors of sports as crime fighters and sports developers.
Mavuso said during tournaments a number of people, mainly the youth, are kept busy and away from mingling with bad company that would lead them to commit crime and do drugs as they would be either watching the games or playing.
He made these remarks last Saturday during the Kai Kai Holiday Park E9 000 League prize presentation function held at the motel’s hall at Hhelehhele.
He thanked the sponsor for the support and called upon other companies to take a leaf from them.

The 25-year-old carpet fitter, who represents Pebsham in the Bexhill Darts League, achieved the biggest win of his playing career when he defeated former world number three Ronnie Baxter in the first round at the Purfleet venue on Monday.
The PDC world number 44 now faces Darren Webster in the second round tonight (Friday) at 10.45pm live on Sky Sports.
Gray's opening round match kicked off this year's championship and he admitted there were a few nerves flying around.

In an effort to attract the youth to darts, a sport that is wrongly associated with adults, Deekay Blantyre and Districts Darts League (BDDL) has organised a Christmas tournament at Ntono Sport in Zomba on Christmas Eve.
BDDL committee member Clement Gobede said the tournament was targeting youth teams around Blantyre and Zomba that intended to join BDDL next season.
'We would like the teams to come together and learn from each other as they prepare for next season's action,' Gobede said.
He said this was part of Darts Association of Malawi's (Dam) development program of incorporating new players who will eventually take over from the old ones.
'The blending of youthful players in the league will ensure continuity because most of the existing players are getting old and may soon retire,' he said.
At the close of the season last month, Dam president Majid Panjwani said it was time for the youth to take part in the sport which, he said, can help in preventing the youth from indulging in immoral behaviours.
However, Dam faces the problem of convincing parents to release their children to patronise the sport as most of them associate the sport with people who drink alcohol.
Gobede BDDL had already assembled young players whose parents were not against their participation.
'There are several youth teams in Blantyre and Zomba that are planning to join our league and these are the teams that we are targeting,' he said.

I decided to take a couple of days off this week to do my Christmas shopping. Unfortunately for friends and family, my holiday time has coincided with the opening rounds of the PDC darts world championship at Purfleet.
I'm afraid there might be a few disappointed faces in the Handler household on Christmas morning, and if that is the case then the blame will lie squarley on Taylor, Barneveld, Mardle and co.
It's hard enough peeling myself off the sofa to do battle with the festive hordes at the best of times, but when the arrows are flying it is almost impossible.

KARATE KID Tetsuya Wada is aiming for a double chop on his debut at the World Darts Championship.
The Japanese arrow king, 23, suffered a gruelling 30-hour journey to the Circus Tavern, Purfleet, ahead of his big-stage bow today.

Following the success of the celebrity darts match, The Hiding Place is now playing host to its very own open darts contest on Saturday December 30.
A £400 prize pot is at stake in the men’s event, which is best of five legs of 501, while £100 is also up for grabs in the women’s tournament.
Registration is £5 from 11am to 12.30pm before a 1pm start in The Hiding Place, situated in the East Stand of the stadium at Kingston Park.

On December 3rd 2005 Justin Irwin fulfilled an ambition - to play in the qualifiers for the darts World Championships. The draw was unkind to him, and he was paired against a previous World Championship Quarter finalist (and current world number 44). Justin lost, but was delighted with how he played - particularly hitting four perfect 60’s to start the second leg.

I’ll be world champion, says executive who quit for darts
At 35, Justin Irwin has now given up his job managing a £3 million ($5,658,135 USD)budget and 150 staff in an attempt to become darts champion of the world — despite being a darts novice.
Mr Irwin was a £50,000 ($94,302 USD)-a-year director for the charity Childline. He now spends four hours a day practising darts and hopes that if he just keeps “throwing them at the board” he will soon progress to professional level.
“I gave up my job with a view to playing darts professionally. I said I wanted to be a world champion at something at some point and I had gone through football, which I’m rubbish at, and I had gone through cricket and I thought I’m never going to do that. I looked at archery but that needs too much space and that pretty much leaves darts. If I play snooker I can try and hit a ball in from one end of the table to the other I would miss all day."
Mr Irwin is confident that he stands a chance... He has a three-dart average score of 60-65, as opposed to the 90-100 that he would need against world-class players. “I have played the odd game in the pub, but never for a team or anything like that.”

Maybe he should auction himself and his darts off on Ebay to obtain sponsors.

THE SCHEDULE for the 2007 Masters of Darts has been announced.
The tournament will feature two five-man teams, representing England and Holland, playing off over five days from Saturday 10 February 2007.

There is not a shadow of doubt that Phil Taylor continues to push the profile of our sport ever higher. Being in the Top Ten nominees for the BBC Sportsman of the Year was great. A darter up there with the athletics and rugby lot? It would have been unthinkable not so long ago.

THE Castle staged the Scottish & Newcastle singles play-off last Thursday. After Wayne made the draw the quarter-final results were: John Blaney beat Leigh Taylor 3-1, Ian Pattinson beat Scanner Bone 3-0, Pecker Woods beat Ian Sharples 3-0, and Garry Bellard beat Des Halbert 3-0.

Phil Taylor Zara's a lovely girl and she loves her darts too. I don't mean this badly in any way but you can talk to her like she's one of the boys. She knows her boxing, golf and snooker. We had a nice chat. To be part of the whole thing was brilliant. There was no prejudice, no sarcasm and we were made to feel really welcome. I was a bit quiet all night, a bit overawed. Me, the lad from the council house, getting out of a chauffeur-driven car and walking on the red carpet with all those legends. There were people with crutches there, people in wheelchairs and they were all champions. It's amazing that this little island has produced so many amazing champions. Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe are friends of mine, so that was great. The nomination, you can't beat it. If I was world champion 100 times I don't think it would mean as much.

The PDC are moving towards a minimum of 25 Pro Tour events to accompany the existing five televised ranking tournaments on the £2 million professional circuit next year.

Priestley takes on Dutch qualifier Josephus Schenk on Wednesday at 8pm, two days after darts partner and qualifier, Lawrence will have hoped to have overcome world number six, Terry Jenkins.

MEXBOROUGH'S Dennis Priestley and Mark Lawrence from South Elmsall both start their quest for the Ladbrokes.com World Championship next week.
Priestley takes on Dutch qualifier Josephus Schenk on Wednesday at 8pm, two days after darts partner and qualifier, Lawrence will have hoped to have overcome world number six, Terry Jenkins.
Two-time champion, Priestley wants a good performance at Purfleet to boost his order of merit standing and keep his top three status while Lawrence of Beech Street said it would be a dream just to win one game.

Area dart players hit a bull's-eye for charity at the Hobart Jaycees dart tournament.
Dozens of local dart players took part in the fund-raiser and membership event at the Hobart Community Center in Festival Park.
'We always try to do things that generate interest in the community,' said Adrian 'Zook' Zakula, former Hobart Jaycees president, who was helping run the tournament.

The Wolverine Darts Association and Metro East Darts Association leagues announce Michigan’s biggest ’01 format tournament of the year, the Michigan State ’01 Championships, January 19-21, 2007 at the Holiday Inn Southfield in Southfield, MI

The Wolverine Dart Association and Metro East Dart Association announce the addition of three new sponsors for the MIchigan State '01 CHampionships to be held in Southfield, MI January 19-21, 2007.
WDA and MEDA would like to welcome Molson, Jagermeister, and Holiday Inn as sponsors for this great event. Each of the three will contribute cash and prizes to make the 2007 tournament the largest it has ever been. With a total payout in cash and prizes approaching $10,000, the tournament is set to showcase the best darters in the state and to enhance the sport throughout the country.
Molson and Coors Light are returning sponsors from the 2006 event, but they have increased their support this year to make sure this event really takes off and continues its growth. Jagermeister has shown its support this year and looks forward to being involved with the sport of darts and its incredible growth. Holiday Inn has also come aboard and contributed prizes and has been very helpful in securing the venue for this and future events hosted by the WDA and MEDA.

"The Golden Arrow Is Back
ONE of the area's biggest-ever darts competitions is to come back to life in the New Year.
For more than two decades the Golden Arrow provided the Burnley and Pendle darts scene with it's biggest individual crown.
And it is to be launched back into life in a new format in January.
Darters from across both boroughs, who are registered with either of the respective leagues, are being invited to sign up for the chance to win a share in the £600 prize money.
But the revival competition will not see games at various venues across many weeks leading to a showdown of the top eight darters from each region.
In it's place will now be a competition where the winner will be found in the space of just one day.
The upstairs room in the Burnley Miners Club in Plumbe Street will be transformed for a massive panel darts competition on Sunday, January 14th, at noon.
Four boards will work out the top eight from Burnley and four will find the leading contenders from Pendle.
When that 16 has been decided, the competition will move on to centre stage in the main downstairs room at the club.
And then the battle will really start in earnest as the search for a champion hots up.
Entry fee for the 2007 Golden Arrow is just £2.
All pubs and clubs which compete in the darts leagues in Burnley and Pendle have been circulated with details and further information is available from Burnley and District Darts League secretary Harold Bowers (423478).

"IGN Sports: Is it true you used to throw darts in your dorm to improve your accuracy?
Tony Rice: I threw darts for an entire year, and after I finished playing at Notre Dame, I still participated in throwing darts. I love to compete. Coach Holtz used to tell us, if you're going to step on the football field or in a business meeting, you better be prepared to compete. It all boils down to that. When he had me throwing darts, that's what it was all about. I didn't listen to what anyone else was saying, I just wanted to pinpoint on a certain target and it worked.
