Dartoids World Bob Elliott is one of the GOOD guys!

# 288 04/01/2007

Sometimes I can’t start writing fast enough. This was the case when I learned about my old friend Bob Elliott.

Elliott and I go back to my early days in darts in the Cape Cod Dart League (CCDL). I was just beginning to venture beyond the comfort zone of “C” league play and into the intimidating world of blind draws.

My early experience was not good. Quite often if I drew one of the better shooters I was treated with disrespect. The added stress of trying my best to shoot well with someone who didn’t want to be my partner caused my darts to fly worse than normal. Regularly I headed home sorry that I’d gone out in the first place.

Local darts players small in number, big in enthusiasm

BY JASON DEEGAN
News Staff Reporter

Rusty Shelton's shot lands in the double bull's-eye, the promised land in the middle of the board that few darts find.

A collective roar perks up the atmosphere in the Wrangler's Saloon in Howell Township. The throw ends the cricket game being played on a recent Monday night. Shelton, a 46-year-old Cohoctah Township resident, participates in an informal dart league that plays Mondays, October through March, at Wrangler's.

"I can't believe that,'' he says to his teammates sitting at a table. "That was pretty cool.''

SCHOLTEN LETS POWER OFF THE HOOK

Roland Scholten wasted a glorious chance to inflict a first Premier League defeat on Phil Taylor when 'The Power' scrambled a 7-7 draw in Glasgow, where Colin Lloyd moved off the foot of the table at the expense of Adrian Lewis.

Scholten held 13-time world champion Taylor to a 7-7 draw on the opening night of the Holsten Premier League, and he repeated the result in Glasgow, but this time he came even closer to beating the defending champion.

Scholten led 7-6 and began the deciding leg of the match with a 180, leaving 81 after nine darts only to waste his opportunity at the finish and leg Taylor in to land double 16 and grab the draw. Unicorn - News

Have gastro-pubs killed the darts scene?
You may be able to sit on a mock-antique leather sofa, eat goat's cheese on focaccia and drink Belgian ale - but the changing face of British pubs could spell the end of a national institution.
The 'thunk' of dart hitting board is, it seems, an increasingly endangered sound.
A survey funded by bookmakers Blue Square found only one in ten people had played the game in the past year, while 40 per cent of men in their 20s had never thrown an arrow in their life.
It blamed trendy new pubs and the decline of the 'good old-fashioned boozer' for the findings....

Unicorn uniBlog - SCOT NOSH AND BRILLIANT BLACKPOOL - Sid Waddell

It has been a few days of pure nostalgia for the Geordie Lip. I have waxed lyrical in the land of Sir Walter Scott and Country and Western in the old stomping ground of George Formby.

Last Wednesday saw me striding along Princes Street in Edinburgh thinking up Celtic witticisms and breathing in pure air from the hills round Lammermuir. I was getting ready to MC a bonding night for investing customers of a big German bank. The lads and lasses played darts on eight boards, supped steadily and were coached by Bob Anderson and Peter Manley. Above us twinkled delicate bratiches, and one could well imagine Robert Lewis Stevenson himself dancing a gavotte on the elegant boards of the Assembly Rooms.

Update: Iconic bar to close - Prince of Wales Pub in San Mateo Ca.

Here is an update that I just discovered:

In other Peninsula changes, the San Mateo institution, Prince of Wales (106 E. 25th Ave., near El Camino Real), has closed and reopened as the Swinging Door. The Prince of Wales was known for its incendiary habanero burger as well as its patrons' devotion to darts.

The darts tournaments continue, as does the burger, although with a different recipe, says Swinging Door manager Bruce Johnson, who worked with Prince owner Jack Curry for many years.

The upstairs space has been converted to a piano bar open Wednesday through Saturday evenings.

New top toque at Michael Mina

By Dana Yates Erik Oeverndiek/Daily Journal Jack Curry, owner of The Prince of Wales Pub in San Mateo, will pour his last drink at the pub on Jan. 21. A San Mateo institution know for its world-renowned dart tournaments, history of famous clientele and ability to make anyone feel at home is about to close its doors — and not by choice. The Prince of Wales Pub at 106 E. 25th Ave. will close its doors and shut off the neon fish ‘n’ chips sign on Jan 21. The building where the bar began more than 50 years ago was recently sold and the new owner is giving current owner Jack Curry the boot. The new owner, Warren Chapman, is already creating a bar on the second floor and plans on taking over the ground floor. He was recently issued a liquor license and plans to call the place “The Swinging Door,” Curry said.

The darting side of the story is told at:

HEREFORDSHIRE darts star Terry Jenkins continues to make an excellent impression in his first season in the Holsten Premier League.

The Ledbury pitcher has moved up to fourth place in the league after two successive wins and still retains a realistic hope of carrying off the top prize of £75,000 with six weeks gone and more than half of the competition still remaining.

Jenkins has already boosted his earnings by twice carrying off the £1,000 bonus for the top check-out, including a superb 141 in last week's success against Colin Lloyd.

Jenkins had to pull out all the stops to hold off a dramatic revival by Lloyd after seeming set for a comfortable win when he led 5-1.

John O'Groat Journal and Caithness Courier: Anti-climax as Castletown make sure of championship

Anti-climax as Castletown make sure of championship
Published: 14 March, 2007

THE final week of the season in Thurso and District Darts League turned out to be a bit of a damp squib as only one match was played.

Castletown "A" were scheduled to play their last match at home to the Park but, having had problems raising a team, the Park forfeited the match and gave Castletown "A" the points and the league title.

Similarly, Halkirk were unable to field a team against RBL so they too forfeited the points, leaving RBL in second place.

The only match that did go ahead was Newmarket v Castletown "B".

Newmarket comfortably took the first round of pairs and Neil Anderson beat Darren Miller in the first of the singles, having an 18-dart leg checking out on 120. Gordie Campbell got the visitors' only point in the singles against John MacIntyre.

John Stevenson was not allowing Neil to have all the glory on the night as he too hit an 18-dart leg.

The reverse-pairs points were shared, with Eddie Reid and Dave McQueen beating Neil and John, and the father-and-son pairing of John and Stevie Stevenson taking the final points from Darren and Gordie.

This week sees Knockout Cup action with the men's semis and final and the ladies' final being played in the New Weigh Inn. Men's teams playing are Castletown "A", RBL, Halkirk and Newmarket, while the ladies' final is between the league winners and runners-up, Redwood and Highlander. The games start at 8pm.

Saturday, March 17 sees the annual East v West match. This year had been Thurso and District Darts League's turn to host the event but, due to there being no suitable venue in Thurso to hold the tournament, it will now be played in the Back Bridge Street club, Wick.

Thurso's team captains this year will be Donnie Farquhar (men's "A"), Neil Anderson (men's "B") and Rona Young (ladies). A bus will be leaving the Comm Bar at 6.45pm and going via Castletown.

Supporters will be welcome.

Congratulations to our closed darts team who swept both the Zone and District competition in Hudson Bay on Saturday. Advancing to provincial play in Moosomin on Mar. 31 are Earl Stirling Brown, Dave Propp, Bill Cragg and Dale Scammell for the team event. Earl will compete in singles and he and Dave will be the doubles team.
The open team of Laurie Lyons, Jack Grassing, Roberta Wheeler and Shauna Grassing won in zones against Hudson Bay as did the doubles team of Lyons and Jack Grassing. However, they were defeated at the District level by the team from Prince Albert of Mr. and Mrs. Finn Peterson, Brian Connelly and Wayne Goldsworthy. Connelly also won the singles and teamed with Finn Peterson to win the open doubles.

Geromino gastropub darts challenge - Morning Advertiser

A leading gastropub operator has hit back at claims that gastropubs are responsible for the demise of darts playing.

Geronimo Inns boss Rupert Clevely has challenged Phil 'The Power' Taylor - the face of the 'Save Our Darts' campaign - to a darts competition.

Clevely, who runs the 17 strong food-led pubco, said: “We’ve nothing against the principles behind the Save Our Darts campaign but we are a little put out at the suggestion that the sole reason for the decline of this pastime is because of establishments like ours. Just because a pub has great food and smart design doesn’t mean that it can’t have a personality. We’ve chosen the Black Swan as the location for the match to re-enforce our point as it’s one of a number of our pubs that already houses a dartboard.

A PACKED house at Barrow’s Cemetery Cottages Club last night saw top locals Dave Pratt and Dee Bateman crowned Evening Mail Darts king and queen of 2007.

The blonde, supercool Bateman, ranked number six in the world, entered the record books by becoming the first player of either sex to lift the Evening Mail trophy four years in a row after beating the vastly-experienced Sheila Tyson 2-0 in the women’s final.

The men’s showdown was an absorbing affair, with former champion Pratt exploding with delight after steely determination and brilliant throwing saw him come from two games behind to edge home 3-2 against canny darter Brad Reeves, who richly deserves his unofficial title of ‘the Pride of Flookburgh’.

Sky Sports - JENKS TO HIT THE JACKPOT - WADDELL

Sid says that after a sensational performance against Colin Lloyd last week in Aberdeen Terry Jenkins will be too strong for Adrian 'Jackpot' Lewis in Blackpool...

TERRY JENKINS v ADRIAN LEWIS

In the 47 legs played in Aberdeen last week the average throw was 98.92 and a 94 average would have won you a world championship in the mid 80s.

Terry Jenkins was one of four players along with Barney, Taylor and Lloyd that averaged over 100 - the tournament is just going from strength to strength.

RAISING THE BAR

How much bigger and better will it get?

The darts revolution shows no sign of slowing down and if I was a better man (which I am!) I reckon the Barry Hearn bandwagon will just keep on rolling.

The standard set by the eight players in the Premier League in Aberdeen was simply sensational and if my information is correct, the PDC is set to keep on growing and growing, as darts continues to reach new heights.

In 2007, there will be 50 days of ‘live’ darts on Sky Sports……it seems the Grand Slam of Darts in November will be screened on terrestrial television and the PDC expansion around the darting world continues to flourish with every passing year.

Darts Forum - Darts Directory - Canada: Darts in the Classroom

At one time, the game of darts made people think of adults in dark, smoky bars.

But that stereotype is waning and these days there are plenty of kids playing darts, says Marjorie Allardyce, youth director for Darts Ontario.

There are 27 youth leagues in the province, most at branches of the Royal Canadian Legion.

There could be lots of other clubs in Ontario, Allardyce believes, if dart leagues were allowed in schools.

A Legion dart player threw his dart at the board.

A few seconds later, his face scrunched into a grimace, unhappy with the shot he just made.

While some dart players were unhappy with a few shots here and there, most players were happy with results of the 10th annual Comeau shoot dart tournament at the Legion last weekend. Friends, laughter and fun was key.

“Darts is about camaraderie for a lot of people. Most people from the Cariboo go to Williams Lake to play and they come here,” Ray Hunter said.

HE met the two former champions and he darted them with ease to add his name to the prestigious roll of honour list, going alongside James Morel (a four-time winner in five years - 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005) and last year’s winner Donald Monnaie.

Keven Furneau is the new Individual Knockout Curtain-raiser champion, thus claiming his first win of the 2007 season.

A member of the Straight Arrows team, Furneau played a heavy-scoring match to defeat James Morel 2-0 in the best-of-three 501 quarterfinal.

“Winning against James was already a big achievement for me. He has been one of the best players around lately. Even if I did not win the competition, I would have been happy with myself for I had beaten the former champion,” Furneau told Sports Nation.

Darts Stars Flock To Southampton (from This is Hampshire)

HUNDREDS of hopefuls will be toeing the oche at Southampton's Novotel in June for this year's popular Daily Echo Hampshire Open.

Big names from the world of darts are again likely to be attracted to the country's top one-day open along with county, super league and pub and club players.

The competition is later in the year than usual - prompting rumours that it was not going to be staged.

But Hampshire Darts Organisation spokesman Frank Branscombe is again busy making plans for the top contest.

He said: "When you put on something like this you have to take plenty of other things into account.

"We need to be aware what other opens are on around that time and see what BDO and PDC players are doing as well.

Luck of the Draw - that’s the name of the darts tournament on Thursday and Saturday nights at the Abington Town House. The rules are simple: Put your name in a hat, get matched with a partner and draw a pair of opponents. Each duo faces off, bracket style, until one team remains standing.

I was only planning on observing the Thursday night game - I am not good at darts - but the enthusiastic crowd of players at the Town House convinced me that my lack of skill didn’t matter.

‘‘Everyone starts somewhere,’’ they said. Next thing I knew, my name was in the hat and someone had thrust a beer into my hand.

I drew Pat Gannon for a teammate and we were paired against Bob Adamson and Fred Krueger.

Santa Barbara ADO Regional at the James Joyce

Here's an update on the on the Santa Barbara ADO Regional from Phil O'Neill:

Yesterday Santa Barbara hosted the Regional at the James Joyce. A total of 7 players participated for a chance at a spot in North Carolina for the US Masters Team. Only myself (Phil O'Neill) and Mick Farrell were the 2 people representing Santa Barbara in the event. Unfortunately for both Mick and myself we both were very slow to get things going not playing anywhere close to our usual potential but we both picked it up as the day went on. The highlight of the day was the best game thrown, a 12 dart 501 game I threw (T40, T25, T40, 96out). Overall there were some incredible darts thrown throughout the day including a back to back T80 by the eventual winner John Kramer. I think there were a total of 14 - T80's on the day for all of us! The event came down to John Kramer and Doug McDonough tied going into the final match between them. First man to take 2 legs would win. Unfortunate for Doug he fell off form and John continued to play superb. John will be going on as our area's representative for the US Masters try outs.

ENGLAND win the Six Nations – yes, that’s right, I’m talking about darts, not rugby union.

I know I saw Ireland play us off the park last Saturday but over in the Netherlands, England, under the leadership of Martin Adams, did win the Six Nations darts tournament.

In the group stages, England first beat Wales 15-10 and then had a slightly tighter game against the host nation, coming out with a 14-11 victory, the same score Holland beat Wales in the third game of the group matches.

TAYLOR RUNNING HOT IN LONDON

Phil Taylor proved once more that he is getting back to his best – cruising through the first day of the UK Open London Regional – to reach Sunday’s quarter-finals.

‘The Power’ will be joined by Colin Lloyd in the last eight. The other qualifiers are Mervyn King, Vincent van der Voort, Wayne Mardle, Terry Jenkins, Dennis Priestley and Steve Beaton.

Pink Ribbon Campaign

I found this tourney info while checking some dart forums....

Hi all,

This tournament all started because I MENTIONED that it would be a good idea for a ladies only tournament to get more of the ladies in the area out there and playing. Little did I know that this was going to come of it!!

You can also find the flier for by clicking this link
It really is taking on a life of it's own. The generosity of Unicorn/Billiards and Darts Canada (UniDart here on the site) as well as Double D co. and of course our own Leah (Phoenix) as well as Condor sports has blown us away!! And we have yet to approach the businesses in town to put together some baskets to raffle off also.

Here is some quick info on the tournament. It's on the long weekend in May, May 19th.
The first 20 ladies registered are recieveing a gift bag full of some amazing goodies.
We are raffling off items over the day to raise money for the Pink Ribbon Campaign.
If you aren't wearing pink . or if you just want one, pink ribbon items will be available to purchase and of course again all proceeds go to breast cancer.
There will be draws all day long.

Like I said above this tournament is taking on a life of it's own. I think we are just along for the ride... and I would also like to point out that this is the FIRST time either Leah or I have ever run a tourney!!! But we are already looking ahead to next year. We have discussed prizes for the team that comes from the longest distance next year... and talked to a local bed and breakfast on giving the players a "darters rate". (which they agreed to this year if we have people coming up to stay)

I think it would be awesome to have it as a yearly event and would be even more awesome if other areas joined us !! I bet if there were a bunch of concurrent tourneys happening we could have some interesting competitions between them such as best turnout, longest travel to attend, most money raised and so on... (see what I mean about a life of it's own??? just be gentle with us since we are new ok lol)

This is going to be a learning experience for us for sure. So I'm sure there will be some "interesting" stories to share along the way lol!!

If anyone is interested in coming by all means the more the merrier!! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!! My phone number is on the flier even if you would like to contact me that way.

Could Cricket have saved the World Series of Darts?
# 286 02/28/2007

The question has been posed: Would the World Series of Darts have been successful had the choice of game been cricket instead of 501?

I agree that cricket is America’s game, that there is more strategy involved in cricket than 501, and that had cricket been the game selected for the World Series of Darts the show would likely have appealed to a somewhat wider audience.

Hey Dummy! We’re Talkin’ about a Darts Light!
# 287 03/01/2007

I realize this may be a bit incircumspect but, what the hell – this is frickin’ Dartoid’s World, so I’m gonna just put it out there.

Had Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan been Jewish and Austin, Texas’ inventor Scott Harrison been alive 500 years ago, under the circumstances, a circumcised (OUCH!) Magellan might have circumnavigated the globe with a Circumluminator on board, enabling the crew to throw some 501 before they were attacked and killed by a horde of whacked-out Filipinos with spears.
