Champions Play Darts in Itaewon

It came as no surprise to many when scientists recently revealed darts to be the second laziest sport in the world behind baseball. For a long time now, the game has suffered from the image of being a dull, pointless game played by dull, pointless, overweight nerdy men boys.

But not all of this is true as some females also play now. The history of darts is both long and illustrious, the dart board allegedly the inspiration behind both the wheel and King Arthur's round table, while darts themselves where thrown for many millennia until some clever person thought of making them bigger in order to kill stuff.

The game's vocabulary has also influenced modern day culture with expressions such as ``bullseye" and ``three in a bed" now a part of everyday life.

For those who play it, darts provides an intoxicating cocktail of skill, nerve, courage, and alcohol. While the game itself is simple, throw the sharp pointy things at the round colored thingy on the wall, to become actually good involves practice and skills.

These skills include the ability to stand perfectly still and throw something forward. Sounds easy? Well it isn't, with most professional dart players revealing it can take weeks for someone to get ``really, really good like me."

The Itaewon International Dart League has been around forever, and for many, the Monday night pilgrimage to the ``Vegas of Asia" provides a bright light in an otherwise dull existence. There are four divisions; A being the best, B a close second, and C&D, well, a bit of a joke. Each team is sponsored by a bar, such as Scrooge Bar, blessed with team ``Eberhardt," one of the oldest and arguably most naturally skillful teams around.

As well as the league, there are a variety of tournaments played throughout the week, with the Friday night one at Dolca Vita bar, notable. If there, ask for Jim, the happy owner has played for over 50 years and is still yet to win a game.

With three seasons played a year, and new bars popping up like mosquito bites in the morning, there are lots of opportunities to join in the fun. New players are always welcome, regardless of sex, age, weight, looks, and skill.

Villanueva, Lozada, Malag, Manangod win 4-Man Team title

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 28: It is always good to see two equally-matched titans in action in any sport, for such a clash ensures that there is no dearth of excitement until the final result, and this was the case on Friday at the Handball Gym of Kazma Sports Complex in Adailiya, when two outstanding teams — Snipers and Charging Pins — vied for the “4-Man Team” Title in the darts competition organised by Alpha Phi Omega Kuwait Alumni Association (APO-KAA153) with support from Xpress Money and Popeye’s Chicken. When the final dart was thrown, Snipers — Antonio “Tony” Villanueva, Joe Lozada, Michael Malag and Rudy Manangod — managed to take home the beacon when they outlasted Charging Pins — Chock Sovery, Ronnie Anastacio, Alvin Coronel and John Ferrer in the 3rd game and final game although it was not an easy task for the Snipers since all the matches went into the deciding leg for a final tally of 4-2 points.

APO-KAA 153 organizers had set up the event on a double round robin format with the preliminary play-offs of two singles events on the 501 best of 3 mode of play which equalled 1 point while two doubles were also counted as 1 point each with 701 best of 3 as the mode of game. For the team event 1001 was used as the mode of play in the best of 3 games and this brought 2 points but in the 2nd round the step-the-ladder setup was used.
The initial singles event of the final game saw Chock on top in the 1st set against Tony when he hit doubles 9 but Tony managed to level in the 2nd leg when he hit doubles 1 to push for the 3rd deciding set that favoured him when he managed a doubles 16 for the win.
However, Ronnie prevailed against Joe in a seesaw battle in the 2nd singles match when he got the perfect eye for doubles 2 in both the 1st and 3rd deciding sets while Joe clinched victory in the 2nd leg with a doubles 10.

When both teams were on level with 1-1 points, Snipers advanced initially in the doubles class with Joe and Tony having a mouth-watering clash before outlasting the tandem of Chock and John by taking the 1st set and 3rd sets with doubles 12 and 16 respectively while Chock and John triumphed in the 2nd set by hitting doubles 16.
Charging Pins manoeuvred the next doubles game into their favour through Ronnie and Alvin who edged Mike and Rudy.
The 1st set witnessed Ronnie and Alvin driven by passion and pressure to level their rivals and get a doubles 16 for victory but Mike and Rudy controlled the 2nd set with a doubles 6 to move the game into the 3rd deciding set which favoured Ronnie and Alvin when they managed a doubles 1.
Darts supporters were on the edge of their seats when the 4-Man Team event started because with both the sides level it was this matchup that would decide the fate of both teams but just like any other sport there could only be one winner and this time it was the Snipers.
It was, however, not an easy victory for Snipers although they had taken the 1st set by hitting their favourite number — doubles 16 — but their opponents proved that they were not an easy prey and fought back to clinch the 2nd set when they knocked doubles 1 to push the match into the 3rd deciding set.

Snipers soon collected their together and came up with a game plan that brought them the 1st 4-Man Championship crown as they pulled off a doubles 16 for the win in the final set.
Earlier that day, in Game 1 Snipers and Charging Pins put their best foot forward and levelled 3-3. Tony triumphed in the initial singles game against Chock when he finished the 1st and 3rd set by knocking doubles 1 while Chock ruled in the 2nd set by hitting doubles 14 while Snipers took the team event that brought them a total of 3 points.
On the other hand, Charging Pins had a hold in the 2nd singles game played by Ronnie as he brushed aside Joe in 2 easy sets striking doubles 20 and 16 respectively while Charging Pins also dominated both the doubles category that saw them reach 3 points.
In Game 2, Charging Pins were in full battle gear when they completed wins in both the singles and doubles class but it seemed that when Snipers combined their skills it brought them victory in the group category.

The awarding ceremony followed shortly, and the occasion seemed like a “reunion” for the brothers and sisters of APO-KAA 153 who had come to offer their full support for another successful competition in which they recognised all the winners — Bernadette Tarucan, Anelene Advincula, Ernie Enot, Amor Auro, George Enteria, Sonny Mariano, Nelson Santiago, Robin Dayao, Isabel Quipse, Jenny Fuentelar, Espie Gumia, Anthony Decena, Lenz Bayot, Deo and Noel Amador, Caloy Abesamis, and Vic Pine.

However, with consistent practice these names can be on the next list of winners and since APO-KAA 153 are “cooking up ” various competitions, fun and excitement will surely never desert the arena.
APO-KAA 153 would like to offer special thanks to Bro. Nelson Santiago, Sis. Amor Auro, Bro. Deo Amador, Bro. Ernie Enot, and Bro. George Enteria.

APO-Darts organizers would like to extend their gratitude to Ramdas Nair of Xpress Money, Majed Al-Trabolsi of Musaad Alsaleh Travel Co. and Rudolf Arceo from Popeyes’ Chicken for the sponsorship of this event. APO KAA-153 organizers would like to invite all darts enthusiasts to join their upcoming “5th APO-Dart Tourney” entitled “1st Expressmoney-APO Founders” tournament, which will be held from 17th October to 19th December 2008. Mervyn King has his sights firmly set on

Mervyn King has his sights firmly set on a place in the top six in the world and the Premier League - starting with a good performance in his second World Grand Prix appearance in Dublin.

King has risen into the top 16 in the Order of Merit for the first time since his switch to the PDC 18 months ago, but he has much more lofty ambitions.

'The King' wants to move up another ten places and thereby qualify for the Premier League, shown live on Sky Sports - and now seen as the pinnacle of professional darts.

"I've just gone into the top 16, but I'm looking to try and get into the top six by the end of the year so I can get into the Premier League," King told skysports.com.

"It's a realistic goal for me but its not going to be an easy one with the players and the better performers I've got to beat and got to overtake, but that is my goal."

Rise

"I've got into the top 16 within 18 months so my next goal is to be in the top ten but by the end of the year I'm really hoping to be in the top six, but there's a lot of hard work to do between now and then.

"It's not just the venues of the Premier League, if you're playing in the Premier League and you're playing 14 weeks and every week you're playing the standard of players you play against then its got be good for your game.

"It's got to bring your own performance on so if you re playing the best you're going to become the best so it's good for you that way as well as financially."

First up for King is a return to Dublin and the CityWest Hotel with its own uniqueness in both the venue and the tournament structure.

The venue is one of the smaller and more intimate of those staging major events, while the double-in format means upsets are always on the cards.

Unique

"It was my first year last year I lost to Raymond van Barneveld in the second round," King recalls.

"It's a bit different with the double-in, I haven't played that since local league when I started playing probably 30 years ago around the Ipswich area around where I grew up, from what I can remember, so it's a bit of a shock to the system.

"You've got to get the double before you can start, so if it takes you six darts just to start then you're going to be struggling.

"Its very good, it's a hard venue because the spectators are so close to the stage it's very hot and it's very noisy but the actual venue itself is very good.

"They can move it up to what size the want with the partitions but as a venues go it's very good.

"It is small compared to the likes of the Ally Pally but it's more personal and the atmosphere seems to be better because with a big venue you can sometimes lose the atmosphere."

King admits his form has been patchy at times, but he has stepped up to the plate in terms of added practice and feels the benefits will soon be there for all to see.

"I'm not playing too bad, it's a bit up and down at the moment - some days I can't miss and other days I cant hit a thing - but it's tending to even itself out a bit more now.

"I'm playing a lot more consistently and I think it's the amount of practice I've put in over the last 18 months. I've upped my practice and I'm working hard at it and I think it's now paying dividends."

Pechera-Billote pair tops darts monthly tilt

Meloy Pechera of the Bacolod City Water District and Rodney Billote of Silay City outplayed the tandem of Melvin Adeva and Michael Dalapatan in the finals to bag the championship honors for the month of August in the monthly darts tournament organized by the Association of Negros Darters and Darts Clubs at The New Tops Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City.

Pechera and Billote racked up wins in the Classified Draw Doubles tournament format -- 501 best-of-three -- to stay unbeaten in the winners’ bracket and enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals.

Adeva and Dalapatan, on the other hand, had to dispose the pair of Diutay Divinagracia and Edwin Millan to earn the right to challenge Pechera and Billote for the title.

But the early leaders proved to be too classy for Adeva and Dalapatan who lost their bid for the title in two straight legs of the first set and settled for the first runner-up honors.

Divinagracia and Millan were named second runner-up while Rommel Bagotayao and Benzy OƱate placed fourth.

The winners received cash prizes and trophies from the organizers.

Meanwhile, local darters are encouraged to keep busy practicing for the 9th Masskaa Darts Invitational set October 11 and 12 at the New Tops Millennium Plaza.

Expected to join the tournament are darters from San Carlos, Dumaguete, IloiIo, Kalibo, Roxas, and Cebu cities.*NAB (Source Link...)

Sky Poker World Grand Prix in Dublin - Colin Lloyd

Colin Lloyd says he is back to his old self and ready to claim another major title as he returns to the scene of his breakthrough victory - the Sky Poker World Grand Prix in Dublin.

'Jaws' gobbled up the Grand Prix title back in 2004 before then going on to add the World Matchplay the following year as Lloyd made his way to the world number one spot in darts.

A leaner spell has followed recently and with Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade and Terry Jenkins splitting major titles and finals with Phil Taylor, Lloyd has been squeezed down the rankings.

As the darts circuit again heads to the Emerald Isle for the Grand Prix at the CityWest Hotel in Dublin, Lloyd believes his fine form in Ireland will help him back to the top of the game.

"I enjoy playing at the CityWest, I was just chatting with the other half the other day and just looking at a few achievements and a few other things I've done overt the past few years and I've actually got a very, very good record in Ireland," Lloyd told skysports.com at an RAC track day at Rockingham.

Results

"I've won a lot of tournaments in Ireland, I was working out I've won about nine different tournaments in Ireland.

"I got a nine-darter to win the Irish Masters in 2006, also I'm obviously a former World Grand Prix winner so obviously the CityWest is a special place for me to go and play."

Whizzing around the Rockingham track is obviously a tad different for Lloyd from his day job, but the darts players also face a unique challenge in Dublin with the double-in format often providing big upsets in the early rounds.

"We play loads of different things around the world," Lloyd added.

"We play 301 and 501 and then there's the double-in in Ireland, but you just adapt to what's put in front of you.

"We've always known that the World Grand Prix is a double start so there's no excuses, if you're missing your doubles you are going to get punished but if you're hitting them you've got a fair chance, so it doesn't bother me one little bit - I like playing it when I'm there but not too often."

Fans

With the CityWest Hotel being much smaller than the huge arenas now being used for major darts events, Lloyd clearly enjoys the atmosphere.

"The great thing about the CityWest is the Irish folk," he said. "They create a great atmosphere.

"Although there's not as many of them in there as there is at the Ally Pally or the Premier League they always create a good vibe so it's always a pleasure to go and play there."

Lloyd plays Dutchman Vincent van der Voort in the first round.

"Vincent's a bit of a cagey fella, he's turned me over the last couple of times I've played him, he hadn't beaten me before then - not that will matter one little bit.

"I'm just going to get up there and try to get on top quickly and get through to look forward to the next one."

Mentality

The reason Lloyd feels so upbeat heading to Dublin is a change in his mentality, which has led to much-improved performances in 2008 including three titles and a nine-darter.

A rise to number seven in the Order of Merit also means that a Premier League return is on the cards.

"This year I've got that oomph back, I'm enjoying the game again and the results are starting to come with that.

"It's a mental thing, I think I've gone back to my old mentality and that's why I'm enjoying myself and when I'm enjoying the game I know I can throw some good stuff so hopefully I can go over to the Grand Prix and have a good battle.

"I'm making a bit of a push to get back in to the Premier League, I'm up to seventh now but there's still a lot of hard work to be done.

"I've been fortunate enough to have played in three of them. It's a great experience, a lot of TV exposure - a lot more people get to see and know more about you.

"But it is tough and it makes your year a lot tougher but if you want to be a professional dart player you need to be prepared to make those sacrifices."

Wade defeated Terry Jenkins to claim the Dublin title last October, and will open up this year's event on Monday October 6 against qualifier Eccles, who will be making his debut in the double-start tournament. (full story...)

Teenagers in County squad

HERTFORDSHIRE started the new Inter-County season with the visit of Warwickshire to the Shamrock Club in Welwyn Garden City.

Manager Charlie Brownless gave debuts to Jonathan Creed, aged 19, and Daniel Ovens, aged 13 and the team faced a tough challenge against a side they had never beaten since the BDO (British Darts Organisation) was formed in 1973.

Daniel was drawn out first and lost the first two legs but won the third leg in 16 darts and then won the next two legs to win 3-2. John Blair, from St Albans, was also a winner for Herts, taking his match 3-2 with a 160 finish. The Herts team played very well but could not stop Warwickshire from winning 23-16.

The ladies did not start too well either, losing the first two games before Jill Theobald (Welwyn) won 3-1. Lady of the Match Lynne Taylor (3-0) took her match with a 21.17 average and Linda Reed (3-2) also claimed victory to secure a 3-3 draw.

On Sunday, against a very strong Warwickshire Ladies 'A' team, Herts lost 5-1 with only Jane Phillips (Watford) playing well to win 3-0 and take the match award with a 22.43 average.

The men's A team did play well but did not get the breaks and lost 7-5. Man of the Match was Steve Hartley who won 3-1 with a 26.95 average.

Dartoid's World - September 25, 2009

Greetings!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – you never quite know what to expect when you pick up a book about darts. We’ll, actually you pretty much do. That’s the frustrating thing. Most of them are boring!

Like mine.

But George Silberzahn’s first book, How to Master the Sport of Darts, was different. That’s why it was so wildly popular, quickly selling out two printings. Now, in just days, perhaps even hours, the Second Edition of Silberzahn’s masterpiece will be released...

War of words has begun in dart comp

DARTS: It’s only a few weeks away from the start of the battle of the clubs and hotels, and there is already a war of words being waged in the streets of Wellington.

Hey everyone, it is only a game of darts. But I suppose this is about pride and bragging rights so I have been told.

The response to the darts competition has been overwhelming with the amount of teams already nominated to represent their club or hotel.

Unfortunately, the Wellington Hotel had to withdraw from the competition due to prior commitments which they have been doing for some time.

It would have been impossible to run a darts night, but I have been told not to forget them as they are looking at competing in future competitions.

A cry for help has been issued by the Grand Hotel.

They have had a run of bad luck forming their teams as work-related commitments have decimated the Grand’s nominations down to one part-time player and one full-time player.

I am sure there are plenty of darts players, male and female out there who would relish the chance of representing their favourite hotel. If so, ring or call into the grand and ask for Bob, he will open you with open arms.

If you are lucky, he may even give you a big hug (male or female).

On a serious note, the competition starts on October 7, but before we get started we need to hold a meeting with hopefully one delegate from each team to attend.

The meeting will be held at the bowling club at 7pm on September 30.

It is to discuss the running of the competition and to give out the draw sheets to each of the delegates.

Finally, I wish to thank everyone for the interest shown in seeing darts played again in Wellington. And all the best in your quest to be the best. (Source link...)

The Dart League King - Dartoid's World

The Dart League King

In the history of time, at least in the English language (I am including British-speak as English, to be kind) there have been less than 75 books written about darts. Of course there are several about the old Dodge Dart and poison dart frogs but they don’t count.

Among the real darts books only six are novels (London Fields by Martin Amis, published in 1989; Death at the Bar by Ngaio Marsh penned fifty years earlier in 1939; Balling the Jack by Frank Baldwin and Wilson’s Island by Stephen Blanchard, from 1997; In and Out by Mat Coward, from 2001; and Cupid’s Dart by David Nobbs, published just last year). While the later few are fun reads, from a literary standpoint only the first two by Amis and Marsh are quality.

Now there is a third... (full article...)

Marketing Profile: Barry Hearn chairman, Matchroom Sport

LONDON - Sports promoter Barry Hearn is nothing if not enthusiastic about his latest venture, the Prizefighter boxing tournament. 'This is the best thing that has happened to boxing since the introduction of the Queensbury rules,' he claims.

Hearn is not one for underselling a show, and has arguably done more to boost viewing figures for sport on TV than anyone else since the inception of Sky Sports in 1990.

TV viewers today have less patience and a wider selection of channels to choose from than ever before and Hearn has positioned himself to benefit from both trends.

'I originally went into boxing 25 years ago because I didn't think that the shows I was going to were giving me value for money,' he recalls. 'Boxing is too dominated by big names that don't have a competitive fight. I could tell you who was going to win 95% of fights before they began.'

Prizefighter, an eight-man tournament taking place over the course of an evening, is earthier than the world-title fights Hearn has promoted for boxers including Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Prince Naseem Hamed. In 1987, Hearn staged a memorable bout between British heavyweight Frank Bruno and veteran Joe Bugner, during one of his comebacks, at Tottenham Hotspur's White Hart Lane ground in front of more than 30,000 fans.

Prizefighter is very different affair, however. 'It's not about using the best in the world. Nobody has said to me that it was the best boxing they'd ever seen, but people have said it was the best night of boxing they've seen,' he enthuses.

The first tournament, held in Bethnal Green, East London, in April, was won by a 37-year-old taxi driver, while the latest show featured a contestant who had called off his honeymoon to prepare for the tournament in a caravan parked in his trainer's garden. The second of the new-format events took place earlier this month at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle and was broadcast live on Sky Sports. In typical style, Hearn arranged for the trophy to be carried down the River Tyne by the Royal Marines in a PR stunt for the TV cameras.

A third instalment in the series, which is due to be held on 24 October, will introduce a new weight category; the winner will take home a £25,000 prize.

You get the feeling Hearn would love a crack at the title himself, but, although he offers a brutal assessment of his own abilities as fighter in his youth, he turned his attention to other sports. 'I was shit at boxing, but I used to travel the world doing marathons,' he says. 'I did the London marathon four times, Brazil, New York and Hong Kong. My best time was three hours 21 minutes. I'm also pretty dangerous off 18 in golf.'

Fighting out of Dagenham, Essex, the entrepreneur today runs Matchroom Sport with his son and daughter, and is responsible for creating sporting brands such as Premier League Snooker, Poker Million and Premier League Darts, among other successful launches of recent years.

The nascent Premier League Darts format has helped make household names out of the likes of Phil 'The Power' Taylor, and scored a major coup in 2006 when Raymond 'The Man' Van Barneveld, world champion with the rival BDO organisation, joined the league. Anyone who has tried and failed to get tickets to a show in the three years since its launch will testify to just how successful Hearn's brand has been.

'Sport is a soap opera, and in soap operas you have great characters,' he says. 'In the 80s, we sat down with the snooker players and said: "We're not going to change you, but we can make the most of what you are." So we said to Steve Davis, "You are going to be boring; same tux, no drinking." We told Jimmy White that he was the Jack-the-lad character. We've done the same with darts now.'

Hearn and his team have fun sitting around inventing the elaborate nicknames for all their darts players. 'We've got a great one for a new player called David Frost. We've called him Frosty the Throwman,' he says. However, he is also honest enough to admit that the Midas touch has deserted him on occasion.

'You try things all the time, and if they fail, nobody notices. We've recently launched Premier League Bowls, so we'll see how that goes.'

One of the most remarkable sporting transformations in recent years has taken place in cricket. The abbreviated form of the game, Twenty20, has flourished, and much attention has been drawn to the announcement of the $100m Stanford Cup, which takes place later this year.

'The Stanford Cup is an immediate fix and an attention-seeker,' says Hearn. 'Our strategy is a bit more of slow burner. I think that Sir Allen Stanford [the billionaire financier and cricket enthusiast behind the Cup] could have achieved the same attention with just a £1m prize fund. Ultimately, if it's a poor tournament, then the money means nothing. The only thing that's important is if people have left with a smile on their faces.'

These days, Hearn seems more keen on putting on a show than making money. 'For years I couldn't say that,' he admits. 'I lost money for eight years on Premier League Snooker, but it makes money now. The money is quite nice, but for a time it was the be all and end all.'

He says the football club of which he is chairman, Leyton Orient, which plays at Matchroom Stadium, costs him £800,000 year, but through all the highs and low his investments paid off when, in 1999, he found himself and his family seated in the Royal Box at the old Wembley Stadium for the Third Division play-off final. Despite losing, it is a day he remembers fondly.

Hearn takes as much pride in his work today as he did in the early 70s when he began buying and selling snooker halls.

'We can just do our job, but we'll never get anywhere; you have to put on a show,' he argues. 'Sure, we all churn it out and go through the motions some days. But if you put on a show and people say "I got more value", that's worth a lot'.

Hearn is now nearing his 60th birthday, but he is not a man you can ever imagine merely going through the motions, let alone putting his feet up for a long retirement. 'I've maintained enthusiasm beyond belief. I've always been half-decent at sports. I'd struggle to get a bronze for ability, but I'd get a gold medal for enthusiasm.'

Prince rule top division in men's darts league

PRINCE of Wales are top of the Bridgwater & District Men’s Darts League first division after a second 7-2 win.

They beat The Jokers with the aid of two Dave Baker 180s, while Matt Patrick had with one for Jokers.

Crown Inn are second, heaving beaten Blake Riversiders 5-4, Martyn Loaring hitting a 180. They are followed by British Flag despite their 5-4 defeat by OVH Wanderers.

Champions Spuds-R-Us have withdrawn from the league after their 7-2 defeat by Squib, because they were struggling to raise enough players. That result is void, as is week one’s defeat by The Three Lions.

Paddy Vearncombe hit a new highest out, 167, for The Three Lions in a 5-4 win over the Hope for whom Jason Blackmore threw a 16-dart leg. In the other top-division match, Railway Club A’s Bob Wilson hit a 180 as they beat Malt Shovel 6-3.

Buccaneers and the Railway Club B remain joint top of Division Two after both won 8-1 for a second week. Railway beat No Hopers with the aid of an Alex Bird maximum. White Hart B are third, followed by Sportsman, who beat Withy Lions 5-4, despite Ricky Williams Jnr hitting a brilliant 158 out-shot, and White Hart A.

On Wednesday night, only one of the three seven-a-side preliminary matches was played after both The Spectres and the New Foresters were unable to field teams. First-division The Jokers beat second-division Railway B 4-3m with the winners’ Adam Ward hitting a 180 in a 14-dart leg.

Have you thought about sharpening your darts lately...

Well they don't really need to be sharp, just well maintained. Check out the following article...

Dart: Sharpening Darts Vs. Rounding Darts

You could really be good at throwing darts. You could have fantastic scores. It really wouldn’t matter though if your darts keep bouncing off the dartboard, if they won’t stick. After all, if they won’t stick, what’s the use, right?

Sharpening or rounding darts for sport or for competition is a good skill to develop, especially if you’re a player. The dart points aren’t actually meant to be sharp, even though they may be when you first buy them. Who woulda’ thought? Sharp dart points ruin a dartboard by nicking the wires, permanently damaging them. They will actually cause darts to bounce too often off the dartboard. Not a good thing at all. And the sharp points won’t stay sharp very long. The points will often bend or roll over upon impact.

Many times a burr will form on a sharp pointed dart after sticking. This very small, very thin wire coming off the tip will cause dartboard fibers to be wrenched free when you’re pulling them off the board. Burrs are very bad for dart boards. To check for a burr, hold the dart with the tip up. Run a fingernail up the side of the point. If there is a burr, your fingernail will catch on it. Should this happen, a dart sharpener, or sandpaper, can easily be used to remove the burr. Remember that it is a fingernail and not a finger tip to use. A burr is a hell of a splinter to have to remove.

So if you don’t want it sharp, then what? Straight up, the point of a dart should be rounded. Rounded just like a ballpoint pen. Rounded tips do not damage a dartboard. They will slide past the wires instead of cutting them. There is no cleaving and, thus no burr will form. Interestingly, rounded-tip darts will stick to a dartboard much more than will sharp-tip darts. How about that? Don’t fight it. That’s just how it goes. And when you loosen the dart, dartboard fibers will not be pulled free. Even better.

Some dart players believe that a dart point should not be sharp or round. They believe that they don’t even need to be maintained. Just play on! This is not good. Oh, no. An unmaintained dart tip will not stay round, it will become flat. This flat-tipped dart will simply bounce right off the dartboard, whether it strikes the wires or the board fibers. And because flat tips compress dartboard fibers upon impact, repeated use will ruin the dartboard, making it very difficult for darts to stick at all.

When the point of a dart begins to flatten, we only want to sharpen the tip enough to round it for use. There are hollow, cylindrical dart sharpening stones that may be used to sharpen the dart tip. These concave stones are very common sharpeners for darts. Small, flat rectangular sharpening stones for darts are also available. If all else is unavailable, use very coarse sandpaper. Simply wrap the sandpaper around the tip, pinch it firmly and rotate the tip until the dart becomes sharp.

Now that the tip is sharp, you’ll want to round it. Place the tip down on a sharpening stone or sand paper as though it were standing on end. Slowly spin the dart in place until the tip dulls just a little. Now tip the dart downward ever so slightly and spin it again just a handful of times. And now you’re done. If you don’t trust yourself to hold the dart still while spinning it, put the stone and dart—or your hand holding the dart—flush against a wall, or immobile solid structure, and then round the dart.

If your darts are dirty, clean them with water and a soft soap. Thoroughly dry them. Now they can be stored without worry of rust. But, if they do become rusty, sandpaper will easily do the trick. Lubricate the points with oil, wipe them as dry as possible and then store them. If cared for consistently, your darts, and not the flights, could last a lifetime.

Remember to keep your darts rounded. Not sharp, and definitely not flat. It’ll only take a couple of minutes of your time to keep them in their best condition. It may improve your scoring and will surely lengthen the life of your dartboard. Good luck!

Sharpening Darts
How-To, and How NOT-To, Sharpen Darts Points!

A couple of years ago, in a British televised match, a highly ranked professional darter bounced 6 darts off of the dartboard's wires within just a few minutes of play.

Incredibly, he never appeared to pay any attention to the condition or shape of his points. Those possibly-winning throws ended up on the floor, perhaps costing him thousands in prize money. And all because he simply did not bother to keep his dart points shaped properly, so that they would slide off the wires and stick in the dartboard. (full article...)

Henderson got to the final by virtue of an easy win over Mareno Michels. The Huntly native was never troubled and won 3-0.

The Colliers B darts team has been tossed out of the Cheslyn Hay Women's League

A LADIES darts team claim they were kicked out of a league because one of their players used to be a bloke.

Melanie Partlow joined the side two years ago after a sex op transformed her from a married forklift truck driver called Mick.

One-legged Melanie, 57, a double top specialist, became a star and helped win several cups.

But now Colliers B ladies have been axed from the Cheslyn Hay women’s league near Cannock, Staffs.

Officials say it is because team members have used foul and abusive language during matches.

But the players believe it is because opponents have complained about Melanie.

Captain Leanne Gardiner, 29, said: “They gave us no official reason, but it’s obviously prejudice against Melanie.

“They said there had been a vote by ten of the 12 teams in the league and they didn’t want us in it.

“Melanie is feeling awful as it’s pretty clear that it’s down to her.

“The other players often ignored her, but nothing was said to her face.

“We’re all behind Melanie - it’s disgusting what’s happened.”

Transsexual Melanie, from Cannock, had her sex-change op in Thailand after she and her then-wife Sue won £250,000 on the lottery — a story revealed by The Sun two years ago.

The redhead, who lost part of a leg after an illness, said joining the darts team was the only thing that kept her from a complete breakdown during bouts of depression.

She said: “They all know about me and I answer every question they ask, including the one most people are scared to ask.

“Most women are OK with me, but some refuse to shake my hand and won’t touch me.

“It’s daft because I feel as much of a woman as they are.”

A league spokesman said: “Some women do find her a bit off-putting, but it is the team’s language that was the problem.”

    Vivian Rankine Memorial Dart Tournament

Darts takes flight in Viv’s memory

    By Matthew Yates, matthew@cfp.ky

    Thursday 18th September, 2008 Posted: 16:15 CIT (21:15 GMT)

A darts tournament this weekend will breathe life into the local scene.

It’s the start of the Vivian Rankine Memorial Dart Tournament. Corner Pocket, Alissta Towers, a venue during league play, will be the site for all of the action.

Darts will start flying from 2:30pm on Saturday and resume their flight at 1:30pm on Sunday.

Play will consist of a round–robin format. Competitors will be counted and then evenly split into two groups. From there players will compete in single elimination games.

Those that do well will be placed in division A while those that do not will end up in division B.

Play will continue until the top six in each division are determined. Those darters will then take part in quarterfinals.

The top two finishers from each division will then face off against one another for the overall championship plus second and third place trophies.

The competition will result in overall male, female and doubles champions. In fact this year reportedly marks the first time that an overall women’s champion will be named.

Though the format is essentially the same across all of those segments there will be a slight difference in the doubles action.

Early registration for the tournament is recommended and can be done at the Corner Pocket during business hours.

According to tournament director Martin Bodden, the element of surprise will be heightened as playing partners in the doubles section will be chosen at random. This will also allow more equal and fair competition.

Though extensive the competition format is in place so that all competitors have a chance to earn a trophy of some sort. According to Bodden over 18 trophies and medals are up for grabs.

In addition to trophies, participants are eligible to win gift certificates, shirts autographed by English darts legend John Lowe and medals for different accomplishments, such as most 180s and highest finish.

The trophies are being sponsored in part by former Cayman Darts Association president Trevor Lloyd.

The main sponsor of the tournament will once again be Cable & Wireless and they will provide complimentary T–shirts for all participants.

Local dignitaries are expected to make a presence including the Minister of Youth and Sports Alden McLaughlin.

The tournament will attract some of Cayman’s premier dart players. Among those expected to compete are Hank Ebanks, Earl Smith and newly re–elected Cayman Darts Association vice–president Philip Parsons.

Parsons is the reigning champion of last year’s division A. He would advance into the playoffs before falling short against Frankie Martyr.

Parsons says he looking forward to returning this time to defend his win and possibly do better.

“I’m definitely looking forward to the tournament. It has always been exciting.

“This time I will look to get revenge on Frankie and claim the A division again if not the whole thing.”

The tournament will serve as entrƩe to the start of the local league. The next big tournament is slated to be the Pirates Week or Mickey Mouse Tournament in late October.

The competition is in memory of the late Vivian Rankine who passed away in 1998. Rankine was an officer for the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and was an avid sports enthusiast, especially with darts.

Proceeds from the tournament go towards a scholarship fund set aside for Vivian’s son George. George was four years old when his father passed.

George, 14, is said to also have a love for darts and the skills for it. He opened the tournament two years ago with a perfect “bull’s eye”.

Bodden says the darts community takes pride in hosting the tournament to help out young George and honour Vivian.

For Bodden the tournament is a way to not only boost darts in Cayman but keep a dear friend’s child on the right track.

Also, it has not been confirmed, but I do believe that there will be another open cricket qualifier on Sunday, the 21st at the Dolphin Lounge. Start time will be 1pm for men's and ladies. If you would like to find out for sure before making the drive, please call me at (email for phone number)....but I will try to send another email out when I have confirmed the event for sure.

Please forward the email on to anyone that might be interested in any of the events and hope to see you there!

    ... in today's email

Found this email posted below on a site and thought I would pass along to remind everyone to get their entries in. This runs the same as the QM, so if you want to get free entry into the games, you must pre-register.

Sadly, JK and I will be missing this inaugural event as we will be in Austin, Texas for the US Team Nationals. But I would like to encourage everyone to attend, as I have been working with the great gents in the Ventura league and this has been a long journey for them to get this going. I would hope that the great people of SoCal could step up and make this first effort for them a great success!

Also, as an added note, last year JK and I took the Amtrak train to Santa Barbara and we noticed that Amtrak has a stop and the site for this event. So if you want to skip the driving, check out the train! It was $54 each round trip for us and well worth the price!

Please pass this info along to anyone I may have missed! Thanks!

The league leader had legs in 15 and 19 darts twice to maintain his place at the top, inflicting the first defeat on Hardy after a ten-game unbeaten run.

Lowthian still leads by two points from Eric Whitfield, who saw off Jordan Cook 5-2. (full article...)
