Obituary: Jim Boan
31 Dec 2008
THE Professional Darts Corporation sends its condolences to the family of American darts promoter Jim Boan, who passed away last Wednesday.
He died suddenly from a heart attack at his home in Georgia.
Boan was the president of Atlanta Darts, whose Peachtree Open has been ranked on the PDC Pro Tour for the past two years.
He also held the Atlanta qualifier for the 2006 World Series of Darts, which was won by Roger Carter
Jay Tomlinson, the PDC's North American Co-Ordinator and publisher of Bulls-Eye News magazine, said: "He will be sadly missed.
"Jim and I were very close friends and worked together at and on many tournaments."
Boan's death comes following the loss of another US darts official earlier in 2008, the Minute Man Dart League President Tom Sammarco.

Seeds of change?
With the game going global and with prize money going through the roof, darts is as popular as ever, and it seems that more people are taking it seriously in a bid for darting success.
Nowhere was this more clear than in the opening round of the tournament at the Alexandra Palace - and in fact in the opening match - when rising Spanish star Carlos Rodriguez took out established stalwart Roland Scholten. (full article...)

Phil Taylor starts new year with power surge
He licked his wounds, assessed his mistakes, changed to heavier darts and returned to throw some untouchable arrows on the way to winning nearly every significant trophy on offer. He pulverised his main rivals, throwing an impressive average of about 110 against James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld in the Whyte & Mackay Premier League and Players Championship. Co Stompe showed the size of the task facing the other players when the Dutchman required an average of more than 107 to defeat Taylor in the German Darts Championship final last month.

Dangerous? Only if you are standing in the way of their dartboard. The Menace coasted through to the win but it was hardly a vintage performance from the veteran who would have likely fallen to a more accomplished opponent.
But Priestley will be pleased enough to reach the post-Christmas second round after falling at the first hurdle 12 months ago.
Kiwi French struggled through his preliminary round match against Japan's top thrower Akihiro Nakagawa on Friday night and it appeared that Priestley would have a simple time in seeing off the traveller at the Alexandra Palace.

James Wade has been firing Cupid's arrows on the oche - and his liaison with TV presenter Helen Chamberlain is the talk of Alexandra Palace.

Sport's latest, and some might say unlikeliest, alliance with showbiz has turned No.3 seed Wade into the crowd favourite at the Ladbrokes.com world championship. Wade, 25, was coy about his relationship with Sky Sports' Soccer AM ladette Chamberlain, 41, after booking his second-round date with Tony Eccles with a 3-0 win over Brendan Dolan.

Have you visited Trina Gulliver's website?
Trina was born in Warneford Hospital, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK and
grew up in Southam, Warwickshire. She has two sisters Denise and Jeanette,
and two brothers Steve and Andy. Her parents are Muriel and Geoff.
At 16 Trina went to college and became a fully qualified carpenter and joiner.
She started playing darts for Warwickshire County Youth at the age of 14
and turned professional in 1996. Trina took part in a darts roadshow
called 'Beauties & The Beast' with fellow player Kevin Painter and
Master of Ceremonies Martin Fitzmaurice. The roadshows became
very popular which in turn gave Trina the opportunity to turn professional.

There can't be many full-time female darts players
I'm one of maybe four fully professional players. But there are women who take it very seriously, competing in tournaments at weekends, holding down normal jobs. This is what I did. I used to work as a self-employed carpenter and joiner sub-contracting for a joinery firm but I couldn't get as much time off as I needed to play darts. Ladies darts is bigger than ever but we get only a third of the prize money men receive. I make my money from exhibitions and sponsorship from Winmau, which manufactures darts boards.
I'm sure the people at Winmau will be delighted you've got a plug in so early. Can you tell me how you first became interested in darts?
My parents were in the pub trade. They'd play for darts teams to make up the numbers and my sister played as well. At 14 I used to watch the league games but wasn't allowed to play, but I would practise after they'd finished. I've always been a sporty person: football, cricket, tennis, table tennis and field sports like javelin. I was told I had a natural talent for darts and if I kept it up I would play for England one day. Playing for my country is my pride and joy; so far I've been selected 13 times. Every other year there is the World Cup. Two years ago it was held in Perth, Australia, and the next one is taking place in Durban, South Africa. In the years between there's a European event. Most of the time I compete as an individual in open tournaments here and on the Continent.
Which ones?
This weekend I'm playing in Belgium but we also play in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands as well as the home counties. But you hardly get to see any of these places - all you see is the hotel, venue, dartboard and the airport. You get ranking points from these events. I'm currently ladies number one.
So what does Mr Gulliver think of your work?
He's always been very supportive. He doesn't play darts himself. He used to be a rugby player and lived for it. But a virus that affects your nerve ends put a stop to that. He was bed-bound for six months and was unable to work for two-and-a-half years.
How do you prepare yourself for a competition?
I get up at seven, shower and have breakfast. Next I'll travel to the venue, which might be around the corner or a taxi ride away. You have to register yourself for the competition. Then I'll start practising. It's a long day so initially it's just throwing at the board and loosening your arm and wrist up. It's mentally very stressful; you need a lot of stamina and have to stay concentrated. It's very exhausting.
What happens at exhibitions?
I'm part of a show called "Beauties and the Beast". I partner Kevin Painter, who is ranked eight in the world, and there is Martin Fitzmaurice, a caller who brings in a lot of comedy. I get to play the locals. I take on the men. They expect to beat a woman and don't always like it when they don't. Funny things happen and Martin reacts to it. At exhibitions players do trick shots. Everyone has their own little thing: someone might throw darts from a kneeling position and others are able to throw a dart backwards and make it flip over in mid-air so it still hits the board point first. I can't do this to save my life.
So it's not all lager, beer bellies and fags then?
It's getting to be a bit of a myth, that old beer-belly thing. But the game did originate in pubs. A lot of darts players are slimmer and fitter than you'd expect, and many play a lot of other sports such as golf.
And finally I hear you're taking on the really good men?
That's right. Every year the top women players are entered for the qualifying rounds of the Embassy World Championships along with the men's county champions. It's a tall order. Women are closing the gap on men all the time but they are improving as well. We can get the same average as the men but we are not as consistent. Sooner or later a woman will break through and qualify for the finals. I hope it's me. (interview source...)

John MaGowan chasing special prize
MaGowan had rarely troubled the scorers since he took up the sport as a teenager, but, at 67, he has been enjoying an Indian summer since retiring as a civil servant in Northern Ireland. He became the oldest player to record a nine-dart finish during a tournament in the Netherlands, in August, has progressed to the latter stages of two significant competitions and lost to Priestley during his first appearance in the World Championship three years ago.

Malaysian tops Pacquiao dartfest in General Santos
Hadzali, winner of the Malaysian Darts Open last July, outclassed all the local darters he faced en route to winning the men’s singles finals, 2-1, over unheralded Mark Palad from Cagayan de Oro, to pocket the richest purse put up in a local darts tournament.
“It was up and down in our finals match, he managed to come back after I took the first set, as I got a bit affected by his actions in the second set but in the third and deciding set, I felt it was time to come back,” said Hadzali, who banked on his vast international experience to sweep Palad in the third set for a 2-1 victory.
In the semifinals, Hadzali took the measure of veteran Dixie Ybanez, who had already won the four-man team and the classified draw triples events with his teammates before running into Hadzali, who won both sets, 4-2, 4-1, for a 2-0 victory.
Palad beat Baguio bet Arnel Orteza with a similar straight set victory to earn the other finals slot in the tournament sponsored by Robson Sportscraft and PCSO, supported by the city government of General Santos, the Mindanao Archipelago Dart Federation, the Association of General Santos City Darters, and organized by the National Darts Federation of the Philippines (NDFP ).
The women’s side had semi-retired and many-time national champion Jan-jan Hinojales coasting to an easy victory after top seeded Philippine International Darts Open (PIDO) champion Analiza Awitan got knocked out right in the first round. Hinojales, a native of Davao City, made short work of North Cotabato’s Jervie Curato in the finals, winning, 5-1 and earning an early Christmas gift of P40,000.
“ We had record turn-outs in practically all the categories contested and this is the first time in a long time that all of the country’s top darters, even those who are already working in the Middle East, have come together to be part of this historic tournament, this will definitely be a big boost in the popularity of the sport, “ said NDFP’s Tito Soncuya who had Solar Sports, DZSR - Sports Radio, and Manila Bulletin as media partners.
Other winners in the event were Long Longyopan and Bebot Mangle in the fixed doubles, youth champion Ronnie Mar Gellaga, Gale santos and Jepoy Adumduman in the classified draw doubles, while Ybanez teamed up with Noel Maturan and Ramil Diaz in the triples event and with Palad, Jun E
Espinola, and Alan Medroso in the 4 man team division. (story source...)

Chris Scutt, Georgetown - Dart player says ‘thanks’
Monday December 22 2008
Georgetown,ON,Canada
Dear editor,
Upon returning from the Winmau World Masters Dart tournament in England I just wanted to thank everyone for their support in getting me there.
Many thanks to Erwin and Carla See, Hunter Carroll and Andrew Jonkman who organized my successful fundraiser and all who attended and those who just wanted to help me out.
I had an amazing experience and it came down to my missed doubles that knocked me out after the second round. I have many tournaments ahead of me next year and will try and do my best to get another invitation next year.
